PS3 Games Keep Crashing

Being trying to play force unleashed 2 and 007 bloodstone the weekend but both games keep crashing and I have no idea why?

Im online and fully updated, well bloodstone didn't have a patch. Bloodstone crashes completely randomly and freezes up making it impossible to play and force unleashed 2 crashes as soon as I have enough points to level up with the message popping up on screen to tell me causing the game to hard freeze. I rebuilt the ps3 data base, cleaned the disks, left it a while but the problems still persists.

Never had this problem before and I've played both Prince of persia 2008 and dantes inferno to completion with no problems at all, dantes inferno I played in between 007 and star wars tfu2. Are the games just shit on ps3 and don't work, like a patch problem or is my ps3 trying to tell me something?

Could be a combination of things, dying HDD, dying CPU, some games did tend to freeze on PS3 a lot due to poor optimization. I haven't played the games your talking about so it's hard to say.

Probably the HDD on the way out. I had issues like that on one of my old PS3's.

If you have an HDD lying around try to use it on your PS3.

If you don't try to restore your PS3 and format it's HDD, Also don't know if it is possible but try to reinstall the firmware. Might help.

If the console has really been sitting around for a long time without ever being serviced, it may be that a lot of dust has accumulated inside and / or the thermal paste / thermal pads have become brittle and the console is overheating (even if you can't feel it from the outside)
EDIT
Depends on how much the particular application demands the console. I've read of overheated slims that emulated ps2 games on the software side and overheated. So just because one game runs stably, another that demands more may well overheat the console.

I'm hoping it's this as black ops 2 crashes when I load up the game also , just tested it. Hopefully I can just back up and swap I over.

What sort of PS3 is it? If it's one of the fat ones then yes, it's probably dying.

It's the first slim ps3

Does swapping the hdd erase all that's on it? If so I could try this before the swap. All my saves are on ps plus

I brought it a year before I had my launch ps4 and it has not had much playtime so its quite clean and silent, it was stored in a box for years. I will open it up to have a look if nothing else works.

Before you do this make sure you back everything up since installing a HDD on a PS3 it ties it to that HDD and putting the old one back requires a format.

I had this happen to an old laptop. It sat for a number of years in a box, and it would crash shortly after starting up. I took it to the tech lead at work and he swapped out the hard drive and everything was awesome. I asked him why it would cause crashing, and he told me that the bearings in the drive will start to freeze up when they sit for a long time...like in storage.

Definitely replace the HDD. Don’t have the link right now, but there’s a good 2.5 in Barracuda 1TB HDD you can get on Amazon for around $50. I have a Slim as well and just installed this and it works beautifully. No crashes, corrupted data, etc.

it's probably time to swap storage out. That's where I would start. you may want to watch a video about putting some new thermal paste in there too.

Yeah I also think that a new 2.5"hdd is the way to go. 1TB is not expensive at all.

Yea I'm going to back it up, wipe it and if it doesn't still work ill just grab a new hdd. Is 1tb the max size for a ps3?

2TB is the limit but you must keep in mind the size of the hdd. There are two standards 9.5mm and 12.5mm, you must have the former.

Edit: It's 1TB and 2TB for an external hdd.

I honestly have no idea. I do know that it's slow. I think it's SATA 2, but bandwidth limited the way the PS4 was with SATA 3. it might be worth trying out an SSD in there, but don't count on a drastic improvement.

I think I replaced the hard drive in my launch PS3 three times, the last of which was a 500 GB drive. At one point I had a 320 GB drive in there there was 7200 RPM, but manufacturers got away from making those years ago. if you can find a one terabyte Seagate barracuda SSHD, assuming 1 terabyte is supported, I'd recommend that drive.
