Final Fantasy producer Naoki Yoshida ‘believes 5G will attract players away from consoles’

That’s according to a report by the Financial Times (paywall), which claims the Square Enix executive stated that the improved streaming speeds would “herald the long-term demise of the dedicated games console” as a primary medium for gaming.

“Once 5G becomes the global standard, there will definitely come a time when we can transfer images to any device,” Yoshida is quoted as saying.

“Players can enjoy a high-quality gaming experience on any device by not being tied to a gaming hardware or TV monitor. We’re definitely heading in that direction, and I don’t think coronavirus will slow this shift,” he added.

“With home consoles, you need to sit in front of the television . . . and turn on the power and wait for the hardware to start up, so it was a time-consuming entertainment,” Yoshida said. “With stay at home, there were more opportunities to turn the switch on.”

Won't stop 5G providers from over provisioning their towers 200%, 300%, etc. 4G was always marketed as an option for 100Mbps. You know what I get in Las Vegas? 0.75 near city edge and 10Mbps on the strip with my cell phone with full bars and LTE. 5G will go the same route because ISP are greedy jackasses.

Well he's right, and it would be silly for anyone to argue otherwise.
“Once 5G becomes the global standard" can mean 5 to 10 years though. So this generation is pretty safe for the most part.

We can all just post whatever pablum comes to mind and it would be pointless for anyone to try to refute it.

I can see where he might have this idea from a Japanese perspective. They have already moved onto majority mobile gaming, and they generally have much faster mobile speeds than we do here in the USA. Our internet connections are all over the place speedwise in the US, and not even one of our mobile companies have true nationwide coverage with any kind of speed.

This also reminded me that one of the countries with extremely high uptake in the XCloud beta was South Korea, which is also a country with excellent mobile speeds and a place where a majority of gaming is done on mobile devices

Well, yes. He's correct that this would do so when it's the global standard that a majority would move to that, but that's a ways off. Seems more he's indicating it'll become another major option than anything else though. Asia is different from NA and its own beast in terms of speeds and infrastructure, as well so it makes sense.

So gamers will ditch $200-500 consoles for phones that are more expensive and require huge monthly payments?
That's a silly take. Almost everyone already has a mobile device that is able to play streamed games. Hell, even in countries where a console is seen as a luxury everyone has a smartphone. What is lacking for streaming is bandwidth

I keep hearing how 5G will change everything in our lives and I just don't get it. You'd think fast internet wasn't already a thing for years now. What's wrong with fiber over wifi?

Maybe that you don't have that when you are outside...

Workplaces have wifi, as well as shops, libraries, public places and pretty much everywhere that is needed. Is the 20-30 minutes we spend in public transport that life-changing with faster mobile internet?

Edit: I guess you can always stream that hot game that just got released while being run over by a car.

Somethings just arent controversial. Like saying streaming will replace dvds and downloads for movies etc.

The end game of 5G is replacing every signal, bluetooth, wifi, even IR. When the entire US infrastructure is dependent on 5G for vehicle to vehicle communication to finally achieve full autonomous cars, freaking videogames will be the least complicated use of the technology.

Quite a bit since it helps keep latency very low and increase availability. It's all back-end but the difference would be big. Not to mention, 5G has importance in a more broad sense than just gaming. I don't know what's this about 20-30 minutes considering that would assume everyone spends that amount of time out in public or in transport. Even then, the current shift to mobile gaming has already shown a change in how people play and they would be adapting to that as always.

i still believe console would exist but the mobile gaming would become way bigger than now.

with 5G that allow better streaming, smartphone's technical limitation like thermal and specification could be alleviated. no more low quality mobile phone games. we can play AAA quality visuals anywhere as long has good internet connection. its gonna become norm. more people can have access to console/pc quality games.

but console and pc gaming wont go anywhere. there still dedicated consumers for that. there is people who prefer to play with big screen on couch. for multiplayer game, sure we can play anywhere but for me, i rather enjoy hours of game with great storyline and music at bigger screen with better environment/less crowded people...like at home.

those company that gonna embrace both might be the smartest one out there. curious what Nintendo gonna do that time.

So this means. I will start to prefer to go out to public transport, work, busy restaurants, classrooms, toilets etc. in order to immerse myself into richer gaming experiences brought on by 5g?
Well . I think, I will fck not.

5g lol, this guy is clueless, will have to wait for 10g, and still local games will play better, dedicated consoles are here to stay for a long time, as long as sony and ms dont become to greedy, and price everyone out, like what sony is trying with the £70 games.

So what was stopping people with 4G and so on? You're saying when pricing comes down for 5G people will suddenly switch? Console gamers are mostly not the type of people who care about mobile. Sure some may be but I'd recon that they use both already.

Wait, wasn’t he that guy who was in the Apple event playing a game on the iPad using a PS5 controller?

How is 5g? Does it penetrate walls better than 5g wifi?

This is largely just a way to get you to continuously pay for games instead of owning them. I can see traditional consoles dying off as dudebro can stream FIFA or COD, but I think there will always be a market for hardware.

So gamers will ditch $200-500 consoles for phones that are more expensive and require huge monthly payments?
Everyone already owns a phone. Streaming would technically not need an expensive phone, just an unlimited data plan.

Nah, no thanks. I'd prefer actually being able to own games and play them when the internet connection isn't working. Bandwidth caps will come into play as well. Games are like 50GB if not more now.

Ummm, bandwidth, speed, latency? All are pretty important for game streaming, and 4G has average bandwidth (tops out at 100 megabits per second) and decently high latency. 5g bandwidth tops out at 10 gigabits, or 100 times the bandwidth. Latency is also much lower. Of course this is assuming cell companies take advantage of it. I can see places like Japan, South Korea, or even Singapore taking full advantage whole we get super hot or miss experiencs here in the US

And with any other device, you’ll only have limited time before the battery run out and you’ll be limited to a small screen or awful controls or both. So no Yoshida, not 5G or 10G because you are missing the whole point of home consoles.

What you wrote is never going to happen in a country that can’t even maintain its roads equitable to the size of the population.

He's wrong, and if streaming became the only option i had, well, i guess that i would just stick to the games and consoles i have now.

Am I old fashioned or is the size of the display not important to everyone? For me, I want the biggest display I can afford. My PC is plugged in to my TV rather than using a Gsync monitor for half the size. So being able to play Horizon on the bus holds no appeal to me whatsoever.
they are saying you will stream straight to your big ass living room tv as well, not just phones and tablets

they arent wrong. as soon as streaming is seamless and instantaneous, there wont be any use for consoles excerpt for collectors or people who like hardware. when that will be possible is the question...

The distrust of publishers will see that continue to be a uphill battle.

Look at Stadia.......

Consumers still want to own their games. It has nothing to do with the ability to stream the game, do consumers trust a publisher to actually keep the fucking game up for several generations? Life? Lower the price? Soooooooo that is really the main issue here. We've been able to stream games for literally years now, yet PS Now is a joke around here. We just had a scare about PSN on PS3 closing down, but shit they think consumers favor the idea of publishers having all games on a server regardless if single player or not? The deep, deep fucking lolz.

So long as gamers in our age group exist, we will demand that physical hardware and ownership. Just cause someone wants to play a facebook game with 5G, doesn't mean I want to stream the newest Final Fantasy.... I still don't see how publishers don't fucking get this shit already.....they are different markets, holy fucking shit FFXV broke records, Resident Evil 8 broke records, GTA V MURDERED Records, Monster Hunter World Broke records, its almost as if gamers actually want to own their fucking games......

Kev Kev Kev Kev " as soon as streaming is seamless and instantaneous, there wont be any use for consoles" I greatly disagree.

Just cause "you" can, doesn't mean the entire world can. Shit, 1gig internet exist.

For all?

For free?

The entire United States has that or?

It existing is irrelevant, until you actually have a world wide set up where EVERYONE actually has that, I simply don't see some world where consoles just go away. PS Now exist RIGNT NOW, how come we still have consoles? We literally still have CDs....... Spotify, Youtube, Apple etc couldn't even kill that shit. So I believe the distrust consumers have with publishers....the greed publishers clearly have and the greed ISP's have will greatly dictate this and we will likely continue to see hardware solely was a bullet point to win.

ie MS comes out with JUST gamepass streaming and no more XB.

You really don't think Sony is going to start bragging that PS6 has BOTH a streaming option and the actual fucking hardware?

Same with Nintendo?

yes i think they is a good amount of the current global console audience especially on the more popular products that doesn't really care about console themselves but play there because it's the easiest and most popular way to play games for now.
but at the same time without them it will remain more than enough people spending good amount of money there
