[Reuters] CD Projekt Red publishes Q1 results - expected net profit down by 64.7%

I loved the setting and enjoyed the game at least for that.
I hope CDProjektRed learns something and comes out of this stronger than before.

I also hope they don't give up on the cyberpunk setting because of this. No developer has nailed this aesthetic of cyberpunk so well and it still has lots of potential.

In case anyone thinks they're gonna get bought, that is very unlikely. CD Projekt is in the process of shifting themselves into a major publisher. They are looking to acquire companies and already bought Digital Scapes a couple months ago. They are shifting to developing multiple titles simultaneously to try and avoid disastrous situations like this in the future.

Curious if the 10million sales the game has, how many of those were returned?
Game sold over 13 million copies at launch, and from then till now it appears somewhere around another 800,000 have been sold. If we said 14 million I suspect we'd be in the right ballpark. CD Project Red themselves showed they processed 30,000 returns. With Sony refusing to sell the game, refunds would obviously be extremely limited on PS4. We don't know how many refunds were processed by Xbox or Steam.

For once, I am with Jim Ryan on this. Cyberpunk is horrendous on base consoles. It's not even that it is buggy or runs at 20 fps. It just looks like shit. GTAV looks better. On Xbox One especially, It looks pixelated and far worse than anything ive seen this gen.

No game should look like that on the left. it is simply unacceptable and I cant believe MS still has it up on their store.

If CD Project were smart, they would stop worrying about the base version and just get both next gen consoles out. my rtx 2080 can run the game pretty well at 30 fps with RT and a combination of high and medium settings with 1440p DLSS, and while consoles dont have DLSS they can use checkerboarding and settle for medium settings and no RT to get to 1440p. It should be easily doable.

Really poor management by CD Project. Their CEO needs to stop complaining about the Sony decision and step down if he has an ounce of dignity.
Quality wise you're right.

Only problem is CDPR spent so much time and money on this game and last gen consoles are like 160 million consoles while PS5/Series systems are capped at launch units and now, which combined is maybe 12 million.

The money is too good to ignore.

Last year they announced what? 10 million units sold? I bet most of those were last gen sales.

Why, what happened?! /s

And their DLCs are still referring to "small additional content", instead of making bigger wholesale changes and add cut content, features, and mechanics to make the game as it was initially intended and presented. Unless they do that, the game won't ever be successful.

It's a shame, really. Imagine how different things could have been had they actually released the game they promised.

Because this makes too much sense. Hello Game's did this with No Man Sky.

Also its CDPR and they're stupid.

They should put all resources to fix the PS version and kiss Sony's feet and beg them to put it back on PSN store that's the only thing that could save them
Need that Playstation money. Jim said no.
This is what happens when you cross sony and there player base, let it be a lesson to all.

4 the players.
When Sony cock blocks you from the world's largest gaming platform with millions of userbase, these things tends to happen to your bank account. Cyberpunk should serve as a warning for other publishers not to fuck with Sony and its consumers.
I'm a big fan of cringe comedy (everyone should watch Peep Show), but damn you guys are really pushing it :messenger_beaming:

Anyways, CDPR will live. Cyberpunk was quite profitable and it will continue to sell decently over the years with the upcoming updates and patches. I hope the CEO learns his lessons from all of this. The correct move would've been to make Cyberpunk a PC exclusive, sell 15m copies or so, and then port the game to the next gen consoles once they're out.

I do reckon the game will see a 2nd surge once the bugs are fixed + plus new major content drops.

A metric fuck ton of people have simply decided to wait, myself included.

Or if they didn’t fool people at how broken the game on consoles and how glitchy the game is on PC and by controlling the reviews footage until release. Because of their awful anti-consumer business practices for the game (ironic as they are always take every opportunity to say that they are pro-consumer) it is absolutely deserved.

Agreed, fully agreed.

That would have helped to build hype for the game, give them time to properly do the console versions and maybe only focus only on XSX|S and PS5 (thus also further lowering crunch requirements on the team), and reduce any impact on their reputation. Problem? Investors and shareholders were demanding console versions day and date very likely… horrible feedback loop.

Wow, CDPR threads are just a playground for the haters XD
Come down, they learned their lesson - the situation was hard, with the push from investors and MS + the pandemic didn't help either. They f**** up, but at least they are fixing the game constantly and it will be on a good level at some point - just wait, it's just a video game.
The fact that you demand quality and pro-consumer behaviour is the right approach. Shame it's not visible in threads about EA, Sony, Bethesda etc though

I'm surprised it took this long before the state of Cyberpunk was in some way Microsofts fault. Never change Gaf lol.
As for your other point, even EA hasnt done anything as scummy as CDPR did with Cyberpunk. Lying numeous times about the state of the last gen version. Showing zero footage, not even letting people talk about the last gen version. Only allowing reviewers to review the PC version. ETC.

You reap what you sow.

This sucks, I've been holding out on playing thinking I'll just wait for the next gen version since my wife wanted to play it already, but my fear is that they are more interested in the "free" dlcs first so they can package them into a Complete Edition version of the game for PS5/XB1 and hope to get a few suckers to pay 60-70 for the full version, instead of focusing on the next gen version first and then finishing the DLC shit. I'll be completely over even caring about playing this by the time they focus on next gen.
My copy is still sealed on the shelf, was really looking forward to the next gen update.
I can imagine the game itself will be really good when the issues are resolved and it as a nice looking series x/ps5 version. :)
I noticed despite how rough the game launched a lot of friends really enjoyed their time with the game despite it's issues.

I really enjoyed the game, but the huge backlash and money loss for what was an unfinished product (even on high end PCs) is a good thing. Hope they'll learn their lesson.

I see a lot of talk about supposedly bad financial situation of CDPR or need for acquisition.

But something a lot of people missed is their cash flow balance
Capture.png

The total amount represents all the cash available at the bank they have atm. It amounts roughly for 520 $M.

It means that they are pretty good and that even if they got zero income moving forward in the next five years they would still be able to finance a Cyberpunk like - project without too much problem.

Sure sales of CP77 have slowed to a crawl but they are nowhere near perillous situation regarding their finances.

And even then I believe the next gen version of the game will allow them to gain a new momentum, I cannot see a more interesting game coming out this fall.

Yeah. CDPR wouldn't be in the process of acquiring other studios and beefing up their current roster for parallel development of games if they were in some kind of immediate danger.

It is unlikely that they would not be getting any income for the next few years, but given the costs of AAA titles now, you are basically talking about a scenario where it is either victory or bankruptcy as “without too much problem”.

In that scenario very few people would advise to make a similarly sized bet.

Yes of course this is just a theoritical, abstract view of the situation, just by saying that the money available on their hands amounts for more than the total development cost for Cyberpunk (but even then this extra money would not be used for dev only, but also for T-bonds acquisition, M&A strategy, dividends and bonus pay-out etc...)

Of course it would be a terrible strategy to not rely on any further revenue and put it all in on a single project lol

i'm kinda sad that my favourite genre of fiction cyberpunk will now be forever confused with this garbage
they also pretty much made sure cyberpunk is going to stay a niche genre forever

Is that operating cashflow?

Need to look at their free cash flow to see how much money they actually have

There is still lots of hyperbole spread by people who either want to buy cheap shares or short the stock, despite the bottom being reached by now.
And to be clear, yes the company was highly overvalued before the release of Cyberpunk, even if the game would have sold 30m copies,
there is just no way a company with just two IPs and roughly $100 million annual revenue should be valuated at 10 friggin billion USD or even more like it was last year.

Again? They tried parallel development and it was catastrophe. They even bought other team years ago (Metropolis Software), but at the end everyone ended working on Witcher 3 because of how badly mismenaged that project was and to add sherry on top all of preproduction work of Cyberpunk was thrown away when main guys has taken over that project after W3 was finished (AFAIR some people left after that).

No they never really tried it. When they bought Metropolis Software the studio was already working on its original project, and yes at the beginning the intention was to let them finish it, but it did not work out in the end (apparently due to CDPR being unhappy with the result). That led to departures in this acquired studio yes, and the rest of the team was reintegraded onto the W3 after that.

It's different from their current outlook where they want to split their internal teams and let them start from the beginning on two different projects.

They tried. It's not about Metropolis. When they were working on the Witcher 3 there was team working on preproduction of Cyberpunk game, but they scraped their work and folded them back to main team to help with Witcher 3 production.
