I wish Sony waited until 2022 to release the PS5 and it was more powerful

I made a thread a while back suggesting that it would have been better for them and MS to wait. No one liked that idea much, but it really would have made sense for a number of reasons.

1. They could have launched to a better stock situation overall without the added stresses of releasing in a holiday season.
2. They could have launched with more mature tools. At this point, both systems are releasing "Next Gen" games that are little more than resolution and framerate improvements over their "Last Gen" counterparts.
3. They could have launched with more impressive games. Demon's Souls is a good game and all, but there really weren't any killer apps at launch (unless you count Bug Snax). A PS5 launch headlined with Ratchet and Clank and Returnal would have been a much better kickoff for the generation.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
I'm kinda with you on that. A lot of people are accepting it, and enjoying the PS5 for what it is. That's great..

But I'm oldschool, and the jump here from PS4 to 5 was small. I'm sorry if you disagree, but it doesn't bring to the table anything that'd make me spend $500 on.

Maybe in the future, when the games are here, and the console is a little cheaper. But as far as launch goes, the PS5 is the most tepid generational leap I've experienced thus far.

....but Sony released 4 PS5 exclusives....there are no last gen counterparts for them.....and one more coming next week....

If both Sony and MS were in MS's shoes with no next gen exclusives, I could understand. But Sony isnt, no matter how some ppl want them to be.

When Rift Apart comes out we will just see if they made a mistake.

I feel like I lose IQ points when I read some GAF thread titles. This is one of them.

I'll leave this one to you guys...

It's similar to endlessly waiting to upgrade your CPU/GPU (back when you could buy one) because there was always something new coming out. Some people could spend years in that endless loop of new hardware being just around the corner, but why? In the end you have to bite the bullet and make your move at some point and both MS and Sony thought this was a good time to do so. Can't say it bothers me, pretty happy with the end product and games so far.

I honestly think they wanted to leave the ps4 behind but the current situation make them think twice.
This I can agree with. They just chose which games to have for last gen.

Like they always have.
That’s not how game development works

that’s not how hardware development works

that’s not how any of this works!

If they waited to 2022 then all the games you listed would have been PS4 games to start with
Well, you see, they would just hold all those game for 2022 and have absolutely nothing for 2020, 2021.

Makes sense to me.

I don’t.

In fact I hoped Sony released PS5 at March 2020 and not late 2020… it was a missed opportunity.

Said that any launch after November 2020 should be considered a disaster.

idc about it being more powerful. But i would've waited if they said they could make it smaller, not glow, not have coil whine, not have a controller that has lots of lights and not sound like a jet engine with a disc inside.

Because Sony and MS are in a cock contest to see who starts the next generation first! We end up with both not being fully prepared or one not being as prepared as the other.
Unlike Nintendo who does whatever it wants because their product is different from Sony and MS. Some might argue Nintendo carved their own nieche while PS and Xbox are almost the same ( except in games and philosophy )

Sony and MS are always trying to not have their competitor any margin.

anyone remembers the PS3 launching 1 year later than Xbox 360?
Or how in a interview by Kaz he said PS4 was ready to launch and all of the sudden Xbox one articles appears…

Delaying either system could have lead to more powerful systems.

I really don't get the point of this thread.

If your constantly worried about specs then PC is the way to go.

I think it was time for new consoles. Though it does seem a bit silly that neither Microsoft or Sony could provide very much in the way of next-gen experiences. They should have planned better, because the drought was noticeably painful last generation as well.
It's not too much to ask for at least one "Killer app" around the time of launch. I don't think either really provided that.
No kidding. Even if they couldn't ship hardware there was no excuse for launching with the poor selection of software Microsoft and Sony put forward. We're over 6 months post launch and there's nothing compelling enough for me to justify the cost of the new consoles.

Yea, no. If Sony waited, they would have lost whatever market edge they had during the PS4 era. I'm almost certain a PS5 pro will surface later on, its just marketing.

Seing the current shitshow with the consoles, production, logistics, cross gen backtracking it wouldn't be a bad idea to do so in hindsight. By the time anyone can pick it up we might be well into 2022 anyway. And barely any next-gen exclusives at that point still.

The PS5 is breaking sales records. In what world does it make sense it have 20+ million PS5’s sitting in inventory unsold until mid to late 2022, when they could have been sold and making revenue the whole time?? And also paying developers salaries for games already finished and just waiting to be released for consoles that won’t come out.

You wouldn’t last a business quarter in any management position making such decisions.

How powerful would their hardware have been. Would we have gotten a more powerful GPU with better RT capabilities, DLSS, more mature tools such as Unreal 5. I feel like Sony and Microsoft should have just waited as the Pro and One X were still putting out decent games.

I wish Sony waited till the year 2100, then PS5 would have been way more powerful... I mean way more powerful than we could have ever imagined.
That's the operative phrase here "way more powerful".

I see the OP point if developers are hell bent on performance killing RT. Waiting 18 months for a node shrink to either include tensor like cores or full featured RT cores. Right now both consoles have half ass RT. Also on the PC side direct storage would of been done and rolled out.

That's an AMD problem not an Nvidia one. In order to obtain tensor like cores you would have to wait for AMD to produce GPUs with them.

Before the consoles were revealed everyone was sure we'd have 7TF max, no RT consoles still on HDDs.
Not we got 10-12TF RT consoles on SSDs. We're literally in the 'best case scenario' scenario.

Also the longer you wait, the closer we get to a streaming future. The big news in 2022 might just be nvidias fancy new data centers rather than another $1300 card.

Dunno, I would have liked seeing these systems ship with at least 32GB of memory. I wasn't really expecting the 'next-gen' to come out until 2022 but even that might not have allowed larger memory capacities.

Computing has kind of hit the wall in recent years and there's no guarantee that a two year delay would have changed much. Having 16GB in these consoles is still very much 'bleeding edge' even though it's not a great improvement over the last gen.

hardware will always get better, sure you could wait for new silicon process
but you cant decide a hardware cut-off, as easily as software.

imo the biggest issue is, for some reasons, jimbo went all in on cross-gen.

as someone said, ps5 is selling at a faster rate than ps4.
yet ps4 had more new gen exclusives being done.

the management of new sony is worrying. at least if you come from the old school gamer habits. 🤷‍♀️

RT is too taxing of a graphical feature. So much so that waiting another year or two would not have made that big of a difference. You would need a massive improvement in GPU performance to make it really viable.

And wait on finished games for a year? are people that scared of cross gen games?

one year lost on potential PS5 hardwarw sales, you would still be seeing cross generation games in 2023

Covid happened, the hardware was ready, the software got delayed, but Ratchet will be the first 'real' next generation game

Reminds me of some of the rumors about the PS5. The XSX was always rumored to be a beast if I'm not wrong.
At best the rumors were 10-14TF RDNA flops, and the people guessing 14TF were laughed at mostly.
RDNA 2 came out of no where and reaching parity with nvidia caught everyone by surprise.

Seeing how alot of PS5 versions sell better than the PS4 version ....I agree. Which is the only head scratching thing in all this. I get that development time dictated it being cross gen but still. GT7 is also a head scratcher since that was labeled PS5 exclusive, so something must have changed.

So....Sony chose Rift Apart to be next gen, but not God of War thats now coming out in 2022....

And Rift Apart can scale perfectly to PS4.....

Yeah.....makes sense.

Maybe Insomniac chose to focus soley on PS5 for Rift Apart? They did just release Miles....a cross gen game....And overall Sony wanted to have an insane 2021 line up.

Maybe for their biggest bangers they wanna tap into the cross gen money. Which again is wild since PS5 versions are selling great right now.
But not yet dude PS4 versions are selling higher than PS5 ones, the userbase didn't magically dissapear on PS4 the day the new was released

Not sure but I believe the point OP is trying to make is, we're having a lot of these "cross-generational" titles on top of very few games anyway. Why not develop games that are good, as well as games that are ready for the new generation? By the time you launch you've been able to secure more powerful hardware

I don't think there's any great mystery behind that. We're seeing so many cross-gen games because the generational differences simply aren't as big as many people think.

The PS2/PS3/PS4 all saw massive improvements over their previous gens because they increased memory capacities by up to 16x between generations. We aren't seeing even remotely the same increases this time around.

The pandemic changed the generation for ever, for both Microsoft and Sony. I'm not sure if it will make it short, longer, or increase the chances of a mid generation refresh. It would have been interesting to see how this would have all looked with the negative impact of the pandemic.

Also, the PS4 was strong and so far ahead, perhaps they could have waited a year to jump into the next generation. You obviously risk the competition getting the head start. But Play station brand was so strong, it might have been okay.

I wish stupid people didn't get to make threads. Neogaf should have a IQ test during registration thats tests your game development knowledge and understanding of the industry.
