What games do you recommend for the 3DS?

As I am putting together a library with a focus on RPGs, like Dragon Quest VIII, Fire Emblem Awakening. Problem is a lot of games I want (Ie, Dragon Quest IX, Final Fantasy IV DS, Pokemon Black and White 1/2) are no longer sold in the eStore and the ones in circulation are either great chance of being fakes, or hyperinflated in price.

Danjin44 Danjin44 What can you tell me about Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate? Or Generations Ultimate on Switch? (If I read correctly GU never made it out of Japan for the 3DS, only the Switch.) I know they are older and very different then World and Rise, but I've still heard good stuff about them.

DS was a much better system for RPGs, so you should find a way to get these games for an attractive price somehow.

Otherwise, for the console itself, there are some pretty good RPGs as well, even if Atlus really was in a era of recycling stuff and did not do many brand new games. They even totally neglected the 3D effect in later games.

Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology : good game, even though I prefer the original one as the added content is unnecessary.
SMT Strange Journey Redux : haven't played it yet, but the original on DS is my favorite SMT game. I fear that it might be the same case as Radiant Historia, with useless new content. No 3D effect as well ! What a wasted opportunity !
SMT IV : very solid entry in the series, should definitely play it.
SMT IV Apocalypse : haven't played yet. Should be bought on eShop for decent price.
SMT Soul Hackers : did not age well, would avoid.
7th Dragon : haven't played, but it was on my radar.
Fire Emblem games : there were quite a few of those, I don't like the series much, but having only played Awakening to some extent, I can say that it was top quality. Echoes is a remaster from an older game, if I am correct.
Devil Survivor : I think Atlus made two remakes of the DS games.
Etrian Odyssey Untold : again, two remakes from Atlus with a new storyline.
Etrian Odyssey : there was at least a proper entry for the series
Etrian Mystery : I didn't like this mashup. I would have preferred to have Shiren 4 in the West...
Persona Q : there are two D-RPG with fan-service for the series, they look like they are pretty good quality

Overall, 3DS was a bit disappointing for RPGs, but it was a very nice step up for platformers, especially because of the 3D effect.

DS is where you can find a lot of RPG gems. Things like Hero Saga Laevatein, Knights in the Nightmare, Golden Sun etc...

I think that you are right to create a library of 3DS games now. This console marks the end of quality dedicated handheld experiences. I have a 3DS XL, entirely black, and it is a great console to play, big screen, games optimized for handheld etc... Quality experience, tailored for handheld gaming, with a lot of 2D gameplay (much better in my opinion than full 3D when playing with handheld ergonomics).

I really suggest to check a few other games, there are many great ones to play in 3D. Good luck !

Definitely not Kid Icarus if you're left handed :(

Don't forget that you have access to the DS library but the bulk of the best JRPGs are insanely expensive. (I would imagine that the 3DS is easy to softmod if you're going that route)

Definitely Radiant Historia, any mainline DQ game you can get, Square ports were great too.

Within the last year I bought a new 3DS and love it. Catching up on so many games and dirt cheap too.

All the usual suspects are great but if you’re looking for RPG I spent a ton of time on those Mario and Luigi games. Fire Emblem Awakening is great too.

Not really 3DS but many that Advance Wars Dual Strike is god tier.

As far as RPGs go:
7th Dragon
The
Alliance Alive(not for everyone though)
Bravely Default
Dragon Quest VII and VIII
Etrian Odyssey IV, V, Nexus
Fantasy Life
Fire Emblem Awakening
Fire Emblem Gaiden
Legend of Legacy
Lord of Magna
Persona Q 1 and 2(absolutely fantastic)
Project X Zone 1 and 2(
1 has the better story/writing but 2 plays better)
Radiant Historia
Return to Popolocrois
Rune Factory IV
Stella Glow(probably the hidden gem of RPGs on the system)
Miitopia
Shin Megami Tensei: IV, Apocalypse, devil survivor 1 and 2, strange journey, soul hackers

There are a few others but those are the highlights as far as western physical releases go although some of them are an acquired taste.

There are some outliers like culdcept Revolt too. Great game but it's more of a monopoly/magic hybrid.

I love the 3DS library and it's probably the last platform really worth building a physical collection for.

It has the best story in Monster Hunter series in my opinion but don’t forget it doesn’t have most of QOL from World and Rise.

With the prices of 3DS games right now? Easier said than done.

I'm getting into the pokemon series yes but I am not paying $400+ for Pokemon Black and White, HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Well I skipped the pokemon stuff outside of Detective Pikachu so I lucked out there. I only have a handful of things left to get and the only real expensive title giving me pause is Metal Max.

Radiant Historia: time travel, excellent writing elevated by superb voice acting, one of the best turn-based systems ever, a Yoko Shimomura soundtrack.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia: the usual FE gameplay, beautiful character portraits, great voice acting, awesome soundtrack, good story and character interactions, a nice dungeon crawling feature.

Xenoblade: a good port if you don’t have access to the Wii or Switch versions. I don’t think I need to elaborate on why this game is worth playing.

Pokémon Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon: if you like Pokémon, this is worth trying out. As charming and addictive as any other Pokémon games.

The Alliance Alive: charming art direction, old school vibe, a turn-based system that’s different from typical RPGs, a beautiful soundtrack by the underrated Masashi Hamauzu. The characters are not as developed as they deserve sadly.
