LTTP(I guess): Demons Souls is probably the most unfair souls, or in fact maybe any other game out there imo

Yep. The grinding for bladestones and other rare materials is my least favorite part of the game.

In bloodborne, the item descriptions tell you that beasts are vulnerable to fire and other spider like enemies are weak to magic. Did they not do that for this game? I struggled to beat 1-2 boss with my +3 claymore. Came back with a +1 crescent falchion and he went down in two hits. So frustrating!
You got to know what to give Sparkly the Crow as a sacrifice and she reveals all kinds of secret hints like this.

in bloodborne or souls it is always obvious that beasts do not like serrated damage or in dark souls that blunt damage is good against armor etc. It's kinda logical.
Here I can poke, slash, blunt, thrust at the brown miners or lava bugs and nothing happens. But magic or maybe fire? ez

ok, small update

i decided to just go get the Crescent Falchion +1 and start spec-cing into a Melee/Magic build, I had some wizard gear and a silver coronet, and I gotta say, having a better time in 4-1, especially learning how the Spinny skels are working and destroying them, there is a big Abyss Monster staring me down though... I may leave him alone for now

Cleared it few months ago. It's a masterpiece. Perfect in every way. If you think where you are at now is hard wait until the boss runback to 'Old Hero' when you died in human form and two red skeleton phantoms are en rough alongside the reapers.

If you are struggling at the start I would going back and choose a magic based build, makes life easier.

Also aim for building up the Crescent Falchion to + 3.

Remake was my easiest Souls experience so far. Finished it in 9 hours with 1 death on Maneater.
I played original of course, last time somewhere in 2014, finished it 3-4 times and got platinum.

Demon's Souls is the worst Souls game, it feels unrefined, because that's what it is. it was the unrefined mold that then was used to make better games like Dark Souls, Bloodborne and the best of them all, Dark Souls 3

but I wouldn't call it unfair in any way. unfair would mean it doesn't give you a chance to win... but it does... you can literally finish all souls games without getting hit

well, decided to go spend a bit of time in 1-2, farmed some healing, not much but at least its some, and the fucking dragon bridge can fuck right off, that last section with 3 archers and 2 stronger blue eyed knights along with a Dragon breathing fire at you, its so much to take in at once sometimes, at least I know the boss is only there, but that run up to him is damned fustrating

and I'm taking a break from Returnal ffs
I’d say get the spear in 1-2 and use that in 2. That allowed me to grind levels for quite a while and then I progressed most of 2 and 3 that way. After that I was ahead of the level curve.

also this might be obvious for a souls vet but it wasn’t for me:

All the soul items on the ground, don’t save them like I did. Don’t use them in worlds like you could. Wait till nexus and use whatever soul items you’ve picked up to increase soul count so you can level up. Goal being to have as few souls on you as possible when leaving nexus.

my thinking at least is then if you die you aren’t trying to get back and get to your souls.

When I got to 3-2 I thought my game bugged when "phase 2" happened.... fuck that fight.

I 'cheated' and summoned a rando to help.
I shoulda summoned. I beat it while my spouse was sitting there beside me. I was talking and saying how I’ll probably die a bunch and then I timed all the things correctly and killed it somehow. My spouse was like, I’m so glad you beat that. You’ve been trying off and on for a couple weeks.

Same boat man but im a little further along. 1-1 and 1-2 done. Cleared all of 2-1 and I'm at the armoured spider. Game crashed on me when he only had less than 1/4 left. Hard boss to melee against. Got his moveset down well enough I just always get clipped a bit here and there. Fireballs are hard to completely dodge.

Now I have to skip out and find some healing grass. I like the crescent falcon everyone's talking about so I'm gonna try and get that then head back to spider dude.

This is the game I play when I'm frustrated with Returnal :messenger_mr_smith_who_are_you_going_to_call:

Ratchet and Clank will be a nice break between these other two.

Consider a shield for Armored Spider if you're having difficulty with the fireballs, if you aren't using one already

The only part of Demon's Souls I found "unfair" is the Maneater boss, because the AI kind of broken and just has hard time navigating that narrow area and something refuses to come down, to point I have to kill myself to restart the fight.

So I'm going though all the PS5 exclusives atm and finally got around to DS despite owning it since launch and only playing maybe an hour or 2 (I played the original in 2010 as well) and my god is it kicking my ass.

Now keep in mind, I've a souls vet, I've finished pretty much every souls-like out there, but DS has really got me in a bad state here, for clarification, here is my game right now:

  • 1-1 Complete
  • No Healing Items
  • No extra Soul Items
  • No Souls
  • A decent-ish weapon in a +4 Long Sword (the Stab from the R2 attack is saving me here)
  • Starter Knight Armor
  • No ability to be human, so always at half health
  • The enemies barely drop enough souls for me to grind out and but healing, plus the Crescent Moon grass takes like 2 to fully heal

I'm lost in 2-1, but have the lift Shortcut, no healing items at all, so getting past the many miners, flame lizards and dogs is rough

3-1, 4-1 and 5-1 are non starters, though the Valley of Defilement is possibly the easiest start I've had since trying it, the Prison requires me to be able to heal or have some kind of Magic Shield

I know the solution is Git Gud, but god damn is that hard to do when any mistake is such a hard punish that I cannot recover from

There is a huge opportunity to farm souls nearby.

Being first Souls game, it is slightly unfair but gives back with excellent farming locations.

Demon’s Souls is undeniably challenging, but imho I still think Returnal is more unfair and unforgiving. At least you can summon help, keep most of your permanent upgrades and grind in Demon’s Souls.

A great grinding spot is the 4-2 with the tall, creepy Grim Reaper looking enemies with the Crescent Falchion or a decent bow. Take out the big reaper in front of the coffin on the bottom center and his minions will perish as well giving you a nice amount of experience. Rinse and repeat as long as you want.

Well, i managed to get to the Tower Knight, took out all the Archers and finally, time to attack the boss

17 damage per hit....

Great.....

I also got Soul Arrow, but it doesn't go past the shield or is quick enough to counter hit, this may take a while, but still, progress!

-go to 4-1, use a blunt weapon to kill skellies
-take a left in the gate after killing the first 5-6 skellies (the same gate with two archers on the top) down the hall take a left and it’ll bring you to the crescent falchion +1 (it’s a REALLY good magic weapon)
-make your way through the level.
-make sure to free the inprisoned guy in 4-1, after you beat the second boss he’ll be just passed the second arch stone right before the reapers. This guy sell arrows, half and full moon grass.
-after beating the final boss of the area (the storm king) you can use the arena as a soul farming section by killing the mantis rays (I recommend using the storm ruler which is also in that boss arena)
-level up until you feel vindicated.
-???
-profit

also no this is not the most unfair of the series, that easily belongs to sekiro.

I mean I'm most of the way through 2-1 already, got the lift working and now to turn the handle for the water wheel, if I remember right the Armored Spider isn't too far away
I love that fight!

We don't have enough good spiders to fight in videogames.

Beat stages 1-1 and 1-2.

Go to stages 2-1 / 2-2 and farm the giant fireworms (those that take an eternity to die) for ores.

Upgrade your basic starting weapon to +10 or something.

Beat the game.

Have you set foot in Latria yet? 3-1 and 3-2 are the best worlds in Demon’s Souls and they’re even better in the remake. 3-1 is a bit frustrating the first time around, but when you know the ins and outs of the prison it’s like coming home again.

Edit: Might log in and ”help out” in Latria 3-3 if you want to get that real quality Old Monk experience ;)

yea, I had 0 healing so was pretty stuck there, that is my next location though

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
In the orginal there was some stairs to left of the 2nd world starting area that had some flying guys around it. I farmed souls there with the bow for hours to lvl up/

I’d recommend doing 2-2 and Dragon God first, so that you can upgrade your weapons at Ed first.

It’s a little bit easier IMO

Edit: A good way to farm tons of good healing items/souls is to spawn at the Tower Knight archstone, run back and kill the Blue Eyed Knight and run back to respawn. Rinse and repeat.

You will almost always get half moon grass if you wear the Providential Ring and its a pretty low risk effort (this is a very viable farming strategy in the remake, I used to do it to stack up Half moon grass in the original but now that respawning is pretty much instant it’s almost laughably easy and fast).

At this point considering the nonexistent availability of the PS5 until probably next year, I’m about to just buy a PS3 and play the original version. It’s the only Souls game I haven’t played.

DS1, Sekiro and Bloodborne are my favorites.

I love Demon's Souls, but it does have more bullshit moments than the other Souls games imo. I felt like you constantly had to navigate and fight on very narrow paths where falling meant instant death. Pretty sure I died more from falling than anything else in the game lol

It can be the hardest or easiest game depending on how you play. My first try after not even finishing the original back then had me beaten and bruised about 3 hours in, felt hopeless. Then I watched a video with a few early game tips, restarted the whole thing and it almost felt too easy.

It's easily the hardest level in the game. I hated playing through it every time.

BUT there are two items that really help with it. The shield you get from the 5-3 boss. It has 100% Magic resistance so you can just tank those magic range attacks. Completely trivializes the second half of the level.

Thief ring. This ensures the flying mantas will not notice you on those ledges and you can easily use a bow and arrow to take out all enemies and even run past the big skeletons. Though I just like to kill them with firestorm.

The thief ring is key because it also makes the boss fight a breeze. I think the game was trying to teach you to use the thief ring in the level so when you get to the boss you still have it equipped.

OK, I can get to the Flamelurker easy enough, but damn is he fast, almost had him the first time, I got caught out when casting, there is barely time to heal in this fight

I will say, its kinda fucked to have the shortcut to him to be one that causes a lot of fall damage on the way

Edit: So thats 2 hard PS exclusives I'm banging my head against, 3 if I include some of Days Gone's Horde Bullshit, but I did finish that fine eventually

Hope Rachet and Clank: Rift Apart is a bit easier on me

I have never had to do this but one time i went in with the thief ring and they just couldnt find me. Are you sure you didnt have the thief ring equipped? They tend to fly off to the other side of the bridge, but always come back down. I am guessing that the thief ring messes with their pathfinding when they are so far up in the sky.

There is a ring that negates fall damage. Cant remember where it is but im sure its in the game.

I also took a lot of fall damage but rethink your way down. You are probably taking the wrong route. It's very dark in that area but even without the ring, if you roll as hit the ground, you should not be taking any damage so if you are taking damage while rolling then you are taking the wrong route like i was. You can take ladders down after the first few drops.

Dont forget to take the flame shield with you to that boss fight. Should let you absorb all fire damage. It's in 1-1 where the two dragons hang out. Equip the fat dude's armor set to reduce fire damage even further. buy the water protection spell from that dude in nexus and apply it before you go into a fight. it's one of the tougher fights in the game so dont feel compelled to do it right away. Level up your falchion, your character, get decent armor and come back later. 1-2 is much easier. 4-1 too.

I don’t have time for all the trial and error of DS, so I’ve been playing by following along with a YouTube guide. It’s a hassle to have my laptop next to me, and it detracts from the overall experience having to always pause and follow step by step. But it’s really the only way I’d be able to complete the game without losing my mind. I haven’t played in months because it’s such a mental investment. Definitely not something I like to just pick up and play.

You are ruining the game for yourself!

If you play it like that you shouldn't play it at all!

Defeats all the purpose the game sets out.

Souls are harder than most modern games but none of them are unfair.

Death is an important part of the gameplay loop and the player should expect curveballs at any moment.

I've got platinum on Dark Souls, got Platinum on Dark Souls 2, on my way to platinum Bloodborne and yeah..... Demons Souls is tough (tougher than Dark Souls), not Sekiro tough but i have some difficult on it.

I don't remember the PS3 version to be this hard honestly.

I just got this game. First souls game I’ve ever played and it’s kicking my ass so far.

I’m trying to take it slow and get a little further each time. I don’t really understand many of the items yet.

I tried using the Templar knight but it feels painful to play as one in narrow halls.
