LG C1 vs Mini led Samsung for movies and gaming.

Can we all collectively just be pissed off for a second that content delivery lags waaaay behind actual TV display ability. Outside of getting 4KUHD discs every day TV content is ass. Luckily gaming picks up the slack.

So, like 14 years ago I painted my room black so that I could enjoy a theater like experience with a 1080P Mitsubishi DLP TV.

Honestly, I would suggest the OLED TV in controlled dark environment. I currently own the LG CX 48 inch and I'm loving it. HDR doesn't get to bright but I prefer it over the constant Haloing and blooming in FALD HDR displays.

From experience, I dislike how bad blooming can get. I have a 192 zone Vizio PQX from 2019 I believe and while it gets bright as heck, the blooming gets in the way. It also murders subtitles.

Hi guys

I just returned my Hisense Q8 due to a faulty motherboard and have just received my refund. Needless to say I'm done with Hisense.

I have an Xbox series X and PS5 so gaming features and HDMI 2.1 is important to me.

Before I make a decision I wanted to get my fellow gaffers opinion.

I was about to buy the LG C1 today but I have been reading so many conflicting things. How is the HDR brightness? Apparently the LG doesn't get very bright and can only be viewed during the night? The other option is the Samsung QN85A which has a searingly bright panel that makes HDR pop but suffers from contrast issues.

Not sure what to get 😩 It's important I future proof myself because I'm tired of upgrading TVs every damn year when technology becomes obsolete 🤦
Oled is better in dark rooms
LCD are better in bright rooms (be sure its a VA panel and not IPS... Much Better Contrast)

The big Xfactor right now is Waiting on Sony new X95j that will be out in stores next month and how it performs.
For me since I game in a very lighted area with windows etc... The best Tv right now would be the Samsung Q90A. But samsung image Processing willfully sacrifice some shadow detail to eliminate blooming. Sony on the other hand image processing is more about picture accuracy which is important to me.
The Sony X95j is what im waiting on to check out. In anycase dont buy a Tv until Black Friday when prices plummet.

The only thing Samsung TVs do well is that they have a gaming motion interpolation mode that works without introducing too much input lag.

I haven't seen it myself, but for everything else, there is always a better option than Samsung.

Mostly already been covered in the thread but don't buy a Samsung miniLED, if you need an LCD buy a Sony X90J or X95J, if you want the best picture quality for movies and games then buy an LG C1 or Sony A80J OLED, if money is no object then get an Sony A90J, Sony doesn't support VRR though but may in the future but dont buy it on a promise.

Overall (without getting into a long diatribe about lots of boring nerd stuff), the Samsung miniLEDs aren't even as good as the 2018-2019 QLEDs so its not worth the money in any way.

Don't worry about brightness of OLEDs or whether HDR looks better on LCD, there are reasons why one is better for one thing and vice versa but at the end of the day, OLED has more advantages in more situations than LCD, if you have the money just buy an OLED and forget about this thread. Get an extended warranty if you are worried about burn-in but I don't think its an issue unless you act like a submental with your content, ie play a game with a fixed HUD for 12 hours a day for 6 months without playing any other games or leave CNN looping for 12 hours a day.

Ok fuck it. The consensus is leading towards the C1. I just bought it lol.

My Hisense is a 75 inch so it's going to sting going to a 65 inch. Hopefully the picture quality will more than make up for it.

Good choice, enjoy it mate, come to one of the TV threads and we can help you with settings if you want.

A 75" Hisense LCD vs. a 65 inch OLED is like choosing between these two women:

once you go OLED you ain't going back. i remember panicking about burn in (yes it is a real issue) and even bought a 5 year warranty to cover it but i don't even care about the burn in anymore cause i know as soon as this TV is done i'll go right back out and get an OLED.

some tips for you (i have a CX):

1. get someone to help you unbox it and get it in place. don't be deceived by how thin it looks. they are HEAVY. i'm a big guy and i struggled lifting it on my own and i got the 55" not the 65" lol

2. bookmark this page: "https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/c1-oled/settings" and use it when setting up the TV

3. disable TruMotion and make sure "Cinema Screen" is On (removes Judder). there is stuttering when watching low refresh rate content like movies which are usually shot at 24fps but you'll get used to it. it's only really noticeable during panning shots. if it really bothers you then enable De-Judder in TruMotion (this will disable Cinema Screen) to increase frame rate interpolation but this comes at the risk of artifacts appearing (usually during fast moving scenes or flickering light sourcings particularly fire)

4. when you are finished using your TV don't turn it off straight away! put it into standby mode and leave it for about 15 minutes. This is because after every 4 hours of usage the TV will do a pixel refresh when you put it into standby mode and this is to help prevent burn in so you want to make sure it can run that. My TV takes about 5-7 minutes to do a refresh but can take longer than that. After 15 minutes you should be good and you'll know it's done cause the TV will make a click noise and the red standby light will come on. The TV also does a more intensive pixel refresh after 2000 hours usage. You can do a manual pixel refresh but don't do that unless you notice any issues with your screen AFTER 200 HOURS usage. you need to give it a couple hundred hours to settle in cause things like vertical banding can appear out the box but will go away after 200 hours or so.
Really appreciate the tips man! Legend!

OLED for sure… image quality is superior.

But you should take the Sony new models over LG C1 because the it uses the same C1 panels but the processing image sensor is way better giving a step ahead image quality.
Currently the LG lineup is better for gaming. Sony have promised vrr support will come…..but I think they promised this like 8 months ago and we’re still waiting.

dont all the miniled have pretty significant blooming under certain conditions? for a television, would be a deal breaker for me. until that is solved, OLED hands down.

I had the same thing happened to me with my $2500 82" Samsung 4K LED TV that didn't even last for 2 years with very little daily use (less than an hour). When I went to turn on my TV last week, nothing came on, and the red light is completely off (meaning no power). My 2009 Panasonic plasma TV is still going strong, with the Nintendo Switch being played on it by the family everyday. This is totally unacceptable from Samsung that a $2,500+ TV didn't even last for 2 years, and it has me swear to never buy another Samsung TV again.

I have the XBOX Series X that I bought 3 weeks ago after not being able to buy a PS5 for the past 8 months, so I just gave up on the PS5 for now. I've owned every Playstation console since the PS1 back in the early 1994. I've started playing it on my LG 65C7 OLED after the Samsung stopped working. It's been 3 weeks now, and I have absolutely no burn-ins or even image retention after hours of play on a daily basis. I've had the C7 for 3 years now, and had only used it to watch 4K movies up until 3 weeks ago, because I had feared of burn-ins. My games look absolutely amazing on the OLED C7, and I'm pissed now that I hadn't tried playing on it when I first got it 3 years ago. I started with Phantasy Star Online 2 NGS, which has a full, permanent display of boxes at the bottom of the screen, in addition to your HP, PP and progress bar, and yet I still never got any image retention after each session. I've been playing Destiny 2's Summer of Solstice for the past week, and it's the best looking game I've ever seen, and it's all due to the LG 65C7 OLED TV.

These newer OLED TV are not like the older tech found on my Vita. These new ones come with technology like Pixel Shifting, and Static Logo Illumination reduction that mitigate any potential burn-ins.

Finally, the OLED TV is on my 3rd floor beach house, and as you can imagine it is extremely bright up here. My OLED TV is in a slightly recess area for a TV, and I have full sliding doors out to the 3rd floor deck, and giant sliding bay window and a sliding door out to the back deck that are always slightly open for the ocean breeze to cool that bright, sunny 3rd floor down. Yes. The OLED does look phenomenal at night. But it still looks amazing to me during the day in a well lit, very bright room, with a bonus that OLED allows you to watch from any angle, vs LED where you pretty much have to be dead center. Good luck with your choices either way. Peace!

It is impossible to get 4K/120 over HDMIs 18Gbps bandwidth unless you set the color to 4:2:0 sub sampling, which looks TERRIBLE on a monitor and in gamZellweger.

Man no it doesn't. I'm using the 4K 120hz 2.0 mode with my 2080ti on a QN90A and if you were at my spot watching me play you wouldn't say shit. The topic wouldn't even come up. All that would be said is "damn that looks great."

Yes, but also thats kind of irrelevant, FALD LCDs have always had blooming because its heavily affected by how many zones they have, so its more about how it compares to the previous best FALD LCDs. I think the reason people are complaining so much about the blooming on the new Samsungs is because they quoted massive zone counts like from 792 in 55", up to over 1000 in the larger sizes so people were expecting a big difference, but they don't even compare well to the best Sony FALD LCD ever made, which came out 5 years ago and has 25% less zones in 65".

LG CX owner here and I'm very pleased with it. Its image quality absolutely ruined all other non-OLED TVs for me after I got used to it.

Brightness is only an issue when the content itself isn't well balanced, like the Donnie Darko 4K Blu-Ray was mastered too dark and there were some areas in RE VIII where it was slightly difficult to make out things, even when played in a low-lit room.

The TV itself though can certainly put out some retina-searing HDR brightness when the content calls for it, so it's more of an issue with TV having hard limits on how far it can compensate when the source content's brightness wasn't well done.

OLED. It's not even a question. It's the best at everything, except maybe for being a computer monitor (I keep mine on most of the day, and I'm not convinced it'll handle 5 years of a taskbar).

Just ignore him. He's even worse than the real Johnny Manziel. You can't expect much from an "aggy".

Oled is king, in terms of picture it's : sony a90j > sony a80j > c1 > everything else

If gaming with VRR, or at 4k120hz is most important get the LG, or if you don't want to pay for the Sony but still want oled get the LG.

Samsung is garbo unless we are talking entry level. And even then, they've gotten worse compared to 2017 (though to be fair so has Sony, in other price tiers).

Yeah right, when you hear the zone count you're like "damn, back to Z9D territory!" but it couldn't be further from the truth lol. Samsung just doesn't have good enough software, nor the QC, and their LCD tech will never match oled and they're desperately looking for an oled competitor while trying to see their overpriced junk as top tier.

I turn local dimming off and just deal with the elevated blacks. I cannot stand blooming and stutter.

I had C7 and gamed on it everyday with no burn in. Just normal use. I checked for burn in using color cards. Sold it the C7 and got a CX 77'.
