I think is LESS about not understanding the story and more about one of two things:
1) Not liking the story
2) The story not going the way you wanted to go

Many people were upset about the decisions they made for the story because it wasn't what they wanted/expected. The story makes sense and it's good and coherent. Of course it's not perfect, but they made a good job with it. However, many people wanted to play as Ellie and Joel for most of the game and wanted a fair-tale ending for them, and since their desire were shattered in the first 30 minutes, they invalidated the game and started hating it.

I could understand that. I've watched tv series where they go other way or make decisions for a character that makes me not like the story anymore or even drop the show.

The biggest problem with TLoU2 as that it sparked a group of people really "dedicated" to hate it at all costs. I haven't seen that before with other game. There are fans and fanatics, but I hadn't seen this kind of hate and disproval of a game and their developers. It's like those people don't realize the game is fiction and the characters don't exists, and that the creator is the one in charge of making whatever decisions they want. Those people really have felt entitled to think they are able to discriminate, hate, threaten, etc to whoever likes the game and/or its story and characters.

First game was great, solid Resident Evil x Metalgear gameplay with an interesting story.
The second one looks awesome but from the look of it they swapped out Resident Evil with Manhunt plus a tiresome circle of vengence story and they lost me there. But all this crazy controversy is getting me interested, I want to understand it lol

These are what I got.

Gamers are just horrible. Sending death threats over minor is fucking garbage. How low is your life, to resort that crap.

What's most interesting to me is the audacity of that group that they think they love these characters more than the people who actually created these characters in the first place (Naughty Dog / Neil Druckmann) and the people who play these characters and have embodied them for years now (Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson).

I love Joel. He is my most favorite (literally #1) video game character of all time. That game gave me a lot of pain, but at no point, I thought this is crap (just because it wasn't giving me what I wanted).

Anyway, despite my love for that character, I couldn't imagine the pain the creators and actors had to go through to write what they wrote -- and the guts it required for them to write that story. One gotta respect that.

I didn't know GFR before, but I found the story interesting and watched the video. They seem to be reasonable people, who think themselves, reflect situations, can express themselves and have no reason to want to harm anyone. Unlike, and I've been around long enough on the internet and in forums, certain communities - toxic communities.
I don't know why some users need to get others down and invest so much time and effort in this endeavor, but over time the thought has spread that it must be due to their own dissatisfaction and they try to drag obviously satisfied and successful fellow human beings into their hole with them; either out of envy or to gain the recognition of others who are dissatisfied. In both cases it is a silly and sad behavior, which is made quite easy by the anonymous internet.
I'm not a friend of extremes anymore, I don't want to deal with bad moods in my free time, triggered by strangers giving stupid shit, that's too stupid for me and my time is too precious for that - and I think it's like that for most people out there. It's a pity that this dissatisfaction is unloaded on innocent people, just because they have a different point of view on a free time topic (we're talking about videogames here - video games are not that *important*).
Immature and just plain stupid posts, even here in this thread, you just have to know how to ignore. It took me over a decade to learn when it's worth discussing and when you should just let it go. I hope, also for the well-being of many online communities and general togetherness, that those who aren't too bothered about such crap will someday jump over their shadows and know how to enjoy their lives, so they don't think it's necessary to get on other people's nerves like that anymore. BTW - I'm not a hippie, even if this post reads like written by one.

TLDR: I get GFR, gtfo trolls - not worth it.

Social Media Is Not Reality

I understand these people make their living with it in part, and I’m not blaming them. But this is certainly a byproduct of being so visible and vulnerable to the dregs of society.

Disengage with all social media for 3 months and see how your life changes 🤔

I've been checking that subreddit now and then, absolutely hilarious copium huffing echo chamber full of people totally not obsessed with TLOU2, epic backfiring polls and RK Ouptost quality insights. Gonna miss it.
Question: is it echo chambers in general that you do not like, or just the ones that are against popular things? There might be a lot of weirdo people there, but I see no reason why they can't have their own space to discuss their dislike of a thing if the people who do like a thing can have theirs. I don't get buttmad when people like a thing I dislike, so others should not care about the reverse.

meh, people don't care if others have their own space, they just get irked at being lectured to by pampered hypocrites.

that's an odd take, I never said I'm against it and I never get buttmad, on the contrary. I enjoy spending time in such places, it's interesting. Like a trip to a zoo. Or to resetEra.

They are the only ones who really understood the game exactly the same way I did.
It's a rollercoaster ride. They make you hate it and love it and mix the emotions.
And I agree if you have "her" by the end of the game, you are a fucking heartless monster and the game did not got through to you.
Imo the game is PROFOUND and only gf reviews was able to explain why (I for sure can't).

As for the channel they are great. The e3 live coverage on twitch was really good and resonated with me. They also hated everything :p

Actually, GFR and your are not the only ones, who understood the game like this, but the majority of the people who played it did - because the game was made for making you feel and think like this.
But people who actually enjoyed the game don't go online and get loud about something they like. It's like always, the unsatisfied and angry people, although the smallest group of people, are the loudest.

I just don't get why some people hate this game with such a passion. Good lord it has been a year already since it came out.

Just take the L. The game is a fantastic masterpiece that smashed all records, won countless GOTYs and even made the internal review team of Microsoft drool all over it.

Do something better with your remaining mental health before you drive yourself into insanity over this pointless hatred of a video game.

Social media was a mistake
Remember when Blizzard were considering implementing their "Real ID" system, which basically mean your real name would appear next things like your posts on the forums?
I kinda wanted to see that happen, just to see if people would stop being obnoxious now that the veil of 100% anonymity had been lifted.
Maybe it's just wishful thinking but I do think a lot of people online act like pricks simply because they know they can get away with it.

Always best to ignore random internet idiots. I don't know why people bother to engage instead of just blocking/gnoring them and moving on with life.
Agreed. Twitch streamer Sweet_Anita does a "Thirstday" section where she reads out the (crude/vulgar) Discord messages from viewers. Several people have pointed out that she's giving these people exactly what they want... attention and she'd be better off ignoring/blocking these people.

I just see all the hate and haters everywhere.
Like most haters are still riding on the same prerelease leaks train about the trans abby and so on.
I was on that train and I kinda disliked the game... but then at half point when I was super angry (wtf, I dont want to play as shehulk), the game completely, unexpectedly won me over.
By the end I was most surprised that my opinion changed. That it came through my stubbornness and made me feel something. It is incredible as I thought "fuck this fucking game, I see what they try to do but no thank you" and yet it ... made me forgive just like Ellie in game. crazy

I think people are too stubborn and close minded. Internet dealt with compassion for good. Everyone is so quick to judge and fight. There is no forgiveness and cancel culture is just a mass mob. People are monsters and internet is bringing out the worst in them.
Last example - today I asked a question on some subreddit (about some philosophy) and they outright banned me from the sub as I dared to question their philosophy... no way to defend myself, no way to explain, nothing. Even fucking murderers get 2nd chances but internet never forgives. These people are sad

Some people act like scorned lovers when it comes to this game. The opposite of love is indifference and not hate and making up an entire subreddit to talk about a game is certainly not indifference.

This is what it looks like if virginity had hands and could type.
Hey I can't speak for those guys but I'm married with kids. I just made a comment on what I thought of the guy. That comment btw had like 150 upvotes. I'm surprised how active the sub was at the time.

As somebody who hates TLOU2 with a passion - it's clear that TLOU2 apologists (such as yourself) ignore the valid criticism against the game. The argument of, "I don't get why people hate this game," just shows you haven't taken the time to listen to the other side of the debate. Which is fine, if you wish to be ignorant. The whole strawman of, "Oh they just hate it because Abby has muscles and Ellie is gay!!!!", is tired at this point. Please do your research.

That being said, no video game should ever generate death threats. I have no ill will towards anybody who enjoyed the game (more power to you), I just personally won't be buying another Naughty Dog game. That's as far as it should go.

He makes a bunch of money by using her popularity and talents. Explain how that makes him a “cuck”, genius.
I'm simply observing the fact that he looks like a guy who would let a dude fuck his girlfriend. I mean that's it. I didn't know how popular their YouTube was. I mean good for him I'm guess.

I am glad to hear that you have jumped over your own shadow and thus stepped out of your comfort zone in order to form your own image and opinion. This characteristic is not only applicable to TLOU2, it is a characteristic that makes you strong and independent in real life as well and brings you further forward.
As I've written before, there are toxic communities that it's best to just stay away from before they infect you on a bad day.

Thank you, that's very kind :)
What is most surprising is that I gave ff7remakea chance and loved it.. and I don't like anime or never played any ff game... and now I am playing xv :p
The point is - stubbornness gets you nowhere and only makes your own life miserable... most likely. OK, enough offtopic
