Disney are definitely the arseholes here. These duel home/cinema releases are dumb. I hope actors get the balls to sue Warner/AT&T as well.
won't someone think of the actors.

Sure...sure.

But one is a faceless corporation the other is

Guy says he hates the model because Disney is losing money. Why the fuck should he care. It’s a pro consumer model. If you wanna see it in a theater, go ahead. If you want to have a watch party and pay 30 go ahead. Never seen so many bitch about having more choices.

It's more about the industry as a whole. Like it or not but theatre only releases are required for big budget movies. Black Widow cost 200 million to make and currently it's box office + Disney+ totals are at 379 million. The movie most likely isn't seeing any profit as of yet. Especially with them having done marketing for the film at least 3 times.
Netflix recently announced that 6 Underground will not get a sequel because it didn't have enough viewership.
Movies need to make money, if they don't make money they don't get made.
Why do you think Hollywood is allergic to spending big money on original ideas? Because the original ideas that they have spent big money on have failed at the box office.
If blockbusters stop making money they'll disappear as well.

Warners movies are in an even shittier position compared to Disney because they are released for "free" on HBO Max.

If you hate big action films than that's fine, the theatre isn't for you. You can still watch your movies at home 2-4 months later, nothing changes.

What's the box office delta if you put another actress in the place of ScarJo for this film? -$100 million? -$200 million?

She's worth at least as much as she's being paid.
Exactly. Just look at that Rub and Tug film that died in pre production simply because the community (we know which one) bullied her into stepping down from the role.

Edit: Wow I never thought I would see the day when people (itt) are going to bat for little ol' Disney.

Good time to be a contract lawyer. They are going to make bank on this.

Disney has been pretty scummy when it comes to honoring contracts, they didn’t pay royalties to Star Wars writers, and now they probably cost scarjo millions and made her look like a crappy box office draw.

Times are tough over at the castle. The Mouse's pockets are a bit tight these days.

Person with a regular contract with the promise they'll give her lot of money because of her, or not making a movie at all : greedy.

Multi billion company who decide to not give tons of money to an actress because reasons and give those money to the board of admin, and fire tons of employees in the meanwhile: definitively not greedy.

Deal or no deal, I won't cry a river over one of the hottest women alive being paid less in millions when she already made millions from the other Avenger movies. We are all peasants compared to these two, let them fight over their millions.

Salt boys gonna stay salty but if she had a contract and they breached it, then fuck Disney. Really eye-opening seeing the posters so far in here defending THE EVIL LIBTARD WOKE HOLLYWOOD DISNEY which they hate so much. I'm sure you would all love to be cucked by your employer and have your contract completely ignored and possibly losing millions of dollars. Probably the type of dudes to work off the clock when their boss asks them to stay.

I had people like this is an old job being part of my team. They dodnt care for being paid more bonus by working better. So nobody in the team got more.

The best way is to get rid of them all

If it's contract breach then fair enough.

That said, it could be problematic for her case of arguing lost earnings if Disney put forward the recent negative publicity she created just before the release of the film with her comments about Black Widow's sexualization in past movies. She kinda torpedoed the film for the sake of her bitter aging actress moment and it got so much publicity that it wouldn't be too hard for Disney to say it impacted the takings and was in part responsible for the heavy drop off the film has seen.

When has she carried a movie to box office success?
The best grossing movie in which she was the key character before this was Lucy and that shit tanked hard.

Exactly. Black Widow failed not because it was put on a streaming platform, but because it was a painfully average movie.
Johansson's sexism talk probably hurt the movie more than Disney+. Insulting your own audience just isn't the best way to advertise your new movie.

Godzilla vs. Kong did great despite being released on HBO. Black Widow had a similar debut as other Marvel movies, but failed to grab an international audience and tanked hard after the first week. Here in Europe, people don't care much about that comic character either and demand for superhero movies has been mostly saturated.

Johansson is just salty that her movie bombed and now she's getting greedy while being courageous enough to burn some bridges after her character's death. I think the multi-millionaire can do without you guys rushing to her defense.

You have a somewhat opposite point of view to this one to me.

I would say none of that stuff in your post matters, it doesn't matter how the film did or if she was sexist in interviews - Disney tried to pull a fast one on her so what's she supposed to do.. roll over and accept it?
According to her lawyer she had tried to get them to renegotiate the contract after hearing of simultaneous release of threatre and stream but Disney didn't respond or tried to ignore her. So it sounds like this could have been avoided.

Also don't Disneyplus charge a once off fee for these newer movies on top of the subscription? Perhaps she wasn't getting an unfair deal with that!
Sometimes with the emergence of new technology, company try to get away with things like this and people need to sue them to set these rights.

There's no point bringing up other movies to compare it to either. This is literally about her contract and Disney's attempt to wiggle around it.

Of course this will be battled in court and it could be a tough one because Disney could play the Covid card.
Disney may end up winning but there is absolutely grounds for suing here.

I wonder if Disney is legally required to try to avoid paying with new tech to maximize short term profits until a legal precedent is set requiring them to pay talent.

Disney covid offensive defense for their first volley is vague and emotional, seeming like a concern troll to distract as they stuff their pockets and cover boasting about their success. Compared to Johansson's calm and clearly drawn lines relevant to the case it's difficult to believe Disney's actually trying. Maybe it's hubris.

What are you smoking? Godzilla did great but Black Widow failed?

Black Widow - 319 million. No Chinese release.

Godzilla vs Kong - 465 million. It had a Chinese release. Chinas box office is $188 million. Take China out of the equation for fair comparison.
277 million.

Black Widow 3rd weekend in America. $154 million.

GvsKK 3rd weekend in America. $80 million.
mVac0M2.jpg

Black Widow South Korea 3rd weekend. $23 million.
AGwjBHk.jpg

GvsKK South Korea 3rd weekend. $5.6 million.
wxKNTpM.jpg

You can compare all the countries on that web site and you'll see that Black Widow has generally performed better than Godzilla vs Kong worldwide. Two exceptions being Mexico and Japan. And Australia is in a weird situation where various states went into lockdown just as Black Widow released, not the case for Godzilla vs Kong. UK seemed to have been locked down at Godzillas release as well because it made fuck all money there.

Off topic but the sexist comments didn't impact Black Widows release, that's only in your brain. It's 100% the Disney+ release + COVID that impacted it, same with Godzilla vs Kong and HBO Max.

I'm guessing most likely she just decided to sue for the most part because her character is done. Of course that is a lot of money to lose out on but if that had been early on in the Avengers series I'm guessing Disney would have just written her out or replaced her. Now with her actions they can focus more on the sister and do their best to replace the black widow which seems to be going well considering how much folks loved black widow's sister.

Don't assume that people who watched the movie on Disney+ would have paid for a cinema ticket also.
Maybe greedy Scarjo should sue for not releasing in China then. Oh wait no, they f*cked that up too:

The delayed release of Black Widow in the Chinese mainland might be due to the negative word-of-mouth over Marvel's controversial films Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals on Chinese social media, Chinese film observers said on Wednesday, adding that July is not a good time due to competition from patriotic films.

In total, Godzilla outperformed Black Widow, which is abysmal for a Marvel movie and indicative of superhero fatigue.
Audiences outside of the U.S. simply don't care about these C-tier comic characters.

I'm actually glad this is a thing. Disney has been clamoring to the skies about how woke they are, following all of the inane social justice movements for the sake of marketing and now a woke lady is taking them to court.

Well, if #believeAllWomen is as strong in Disney and Hollywood as they parrot it, then they should be giving her all of the money she claims, no questions asked.

Let them fight. This is the real entertainment. :p

My god, she got 15 million dollars for Black Widow, 35 million for Avengers and is the highest paid actress in Hollywood.

Disney signed a contract to give SJ a share of box office revenue . SJ agreed to do the movie based on that the understanding it would be like all previous Marvel movie releases. otherwise she would have just taken a bigger flat fee. by reducing her flat fee she helped reduce the cost of the movie and helped it get maid in the 1st place. Disney went and altered the whole grounds SJ based here decision on.

Being accusatory towards Disney - may get her some due cash, but it wont get her more Disney studio screen time...

She has to know that.

Campea's view point.

the big issue here the SJ deal is based on pre-COVID expectations. Disney should have compensated her for a part of lost revenues. SJ on her end should be realistic and not expect her lost revenue to be similar to pre-COVID box-office projections.

as for same day streaming movie releases, they make no financial sense. though there was a specific benefit to Disney and that it gives their service more momentum in it's launch period. they would write the loss down as marketing for the service. long term it may be better to shift the Marvel MCU into the Loki/Falcone/Mandalorian mini series format. pull the current lineup of films, add more scenes, give time to better know the characters and more world exposition. the Marvel movies always seemed hectic anyway with little time given to appreciate the world.

the cinema business may never regain it's peak. at least not for a few years. Disney may be better off building up this phase of the Marvel MCU on streaming and release a big ensemble movie in the summer of 2023/2024. kind of like how monthly comics build up to big bi-annual events.

So you think super woke Disney is going to blacklist the biggest female star in Hollywood in this current culture of hyper feminism? All of them being publicly called out for breaking a contract.

Not sure I agree. Time will tell.

i bet she accuses them of sexism shortly

Wokeness is fakery at it's heart, and Disney has the power to make any female the biggest star in Hollywood

What a greedy c*nt!
So she's a cunt because she considerably richer than you? I don't get it.

There was a contractual obligation, and Disney allegedly breached that contract. So she's suing them for what is owed to her. It makes sense.
Contracts don't stop being important because people are rich lol

Didn't her character get killed off in Avengers Endgame. This could have been her last big payday so I could see why she would be pissed.

People don't understand that being a entertainer is a very short career for most. She will probably need that money to live off of for the rest of her life so I get why she we would pissed over being screwed out of another $20+ million. You also have to factor in taxes, lawyers, managers and all the people she has to pay, its not like she is getting all of the money dumped into her account lol.

With this multiverse stuff Marvel's pulling lately, they can bring characters back.

I mean, she’s technically in the right here. And LOL at Disney trying to throw it back on her, as if their lawyers wouldn’t do exactly what hers are doing.

Can’t wait to see Amy Adams as her recast, lol.

So apprently the core issue is the movie isn't doing well and hence isnt making as much as she and her managers thought .. ( no shit .. who wanted a black widow movie? )

No the core issue is that Disney releasing the movie on Disney+ reduced the amount of box office the movie received. And due to the way her contract is worded that means that Disney directly affected how much money they had to pay her.
