Social Media Users..... how has the service changed from start to now?

Ive got two. FB and LinkedIn. So I dont have or use Instagram, Pinterest etc....

LinkedIn started as what everyone knows now. Build a career page, connect with people, there's job listings and business articles. Like FB, there's group pages you can join (like industry pages). That all goes together.

Last few years:

- HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! I was wondering where the fuck these were coming from but in your Contact link, there is a birthday field you can input. It's not in the main body sections
- My wife and I are having a baby!!!! Here's a pic
- Endless political shit
- Stuff that has to do more about inspiration than career related. Ya someone can say inspirational stuff can relate to business, but thats a stretch to me. Lots of posts about random people beating cancer or people saying they are proud parents of Downs Syndrome kids (here's a pic of me and my son with DS) etc....
- Here's one that just popped up..... Hey everyone, I'm taking a hiatus to travel Asia and hike mountains and stuff. Here's a pic of me out in the wild
- One guy posted a pic of himself in high school being fat, now that he looks in good shape, has a staged professional photo pic and his message to everyone is "dont judge a book by its cover". Wow, thanks for the tip
- For those of you who dont use Linkedin, I'd say about 1/4 to 1/3 of companies change their logo to rainbow colours leading up to Pride Month. The second it flips over to July, logos go back to normal

Twitter. Used to have a tiny letter count and everyone could see your @'s

Was literally a tool to dip in and out of conversations about things that interested you.

Now it's algorithmed up the wazoo and the dip in and out is gone. It's like a blog page for most now.

LinkedIn has always had it's fair share of FB esque posting, and promoted articles from morons - I used to get a lot of stuff by recruitment 'experts' pushed at me. I've been on it for about a decade, it hasn't changed that much.

I have pretty much stop using social media for sharing my daily activities. Never used Instagram or TikTok. My Facebook account is a burner account and I only use it to read local news and happenings. Got rid of LinkedIn because its useless to me.

Most of my family members also no longer use social media and settled for group chats for better privacy.

Are you sure you aren’t confusing your Facebook with your LinkedIn.

my LinkedIn is still 80% buisness, and 20% inspirational quotes and crap. No one talks about having babies

Twitter
It used to be you'd only see things tweeted, liked, replied to, or retweeted by those you followed in chronological order. It was great. Build yourself a nice little echo chamber of friends, colleagues, and like-minded individuals and have nice conversations. At the end of a long day you could relax and scroll through your feed and see what you missed, in order.

Now via their terrible algorithms they hoist all kinds of dumb, uninteresting shit into your timeline in wildly unchronological order, turning it into an unending game of telling the uncaring, unthinking beast what you're NOT interested in, muting or blocking retards, or building lists just so you can try and find some semblance of the old, good Twitter amongst the new wasteland.

Reddit
It was once very similar to a discussion forum. It had its avalanche of meme communities and a somewhat unique broader online culture, but overall one could find engaging and worthwhile discussions within many subreddits - even the massive ones. Over time a smaller and smaller group of users gained moderatorship over the largest and most active subreddits. Many of these mods are very similar to ResetEra mods - in that they're quire frankly violently stupid and unable to grasp the simple concept of moderating based on a set of rules and not by whatever emotions are guiding them at that moment. So it became next to impossible to have quality discourse there without it being rapidly shutdown or community members banned for the most banal of reasons.

Now the only good places on Reddit are the tiny subreddits with rational human beings as mods. All of the big subreddits, like /news/ or /politics/ or /askReddit/ are completely sanitized echo chambers where the best discussions are typically locked by the mods within an hour of their posting.

Twitter used to be a fantastic barebones social network for Internet-savvy people pre-2010 or so. Now it's all about "The Algorithm" and showing you shit you don't want to see. The only new feature I'd want for Twitter is to just let me show tweets chronologically from the people I follow.

Linkedin thinks they are professional but filled with the usual nonsense as with other social media stories. No escape from inspirational stories, overcoming adversity and standing up for [cause of the month].

LinkedIn started very barebones. Basically what's your name and who do you work for. Add connections and recommend people. It didn't have nearly as much going on as it does now.

FB was a lot more like a forum. Or maybe like Twitter but with more permanence. At least the people I knew only shared the most interesting stuff, not like mountains of mundanity that everyone posts constantly now. I think Twitter ruined it because all of a sudden people posted crap like "Ate a popsicle today." That junk spread everywhere.

MySpace I never actually got into that much. I had a page, but no particular reason for it.

Geocities and Angelfire was were it was at. I had a couple of fan pages I tinkered with and loved browsing the weirdness.

So I just logged into my Linkedin, 17 contacts requests from Chinese companies trying to sell me shit. That's basically every time I do bother to log in. Occasionally I'll get a contact that looks genuine, but it's some loan-wolf grifter trying to con me into investing in one of their scams. Basically exchange a couple of messages then hit me with the "Let's hang out at the weekend, get a coffee" that's where they'll start the hard sell.

Fake job offers from recruitment companies that just want me to add them so they can get to my contacts list and spam them as well.

You know another platform that got fucked by social media-isation? Flickr. As soon as the tried to make it like facebook they killed the social aspect it had built up naturally and lost the focus from the actual photography.

The twitter thing you guys mentioned about algorithm and whatever, I dont know about because I dont have a twitter account. I cant search or post.

What I can do is do a google search and get to a person or tweet or just click a Twitter link and go into it, read comments, read the users profile and click the right hand margin trending topics, which for me shows Olympics stuff, Scarlett Johnanson Disney lawsuit, Berrios (Jays pitcher they got recently), and suggested topics which one of them says NHL and Hockey. Not surprising considering where I live.

I was an early adopter of both Facebook and Twitter and used them both in the early days from around 2009 onwards. They were both new and intriguing then. As time went on though I realised that most of my friends developed an online persona that was quite different to the person I knew in reality. One of the main reasons I quit all social media and just deal with friends directly, cutting out all their self promotion and virtue signaling and endless photos of their kids and humble bragging about shit they bought.

I've found there are a lot of weird and unusual facebook groups that I get a mild amount of amusement from.

For example, I'm in one where people find crackheads that live near them and post videos of them.

Social media used to be a way of expressing your ideas and sharing information freely.

Now it's nothing but rampant privacy violations, directed political and corporate marketing, censorship, and hate porn intentionally funneled to you through the algorithms they put in place.

It's changed for me in that it used to be fun to interact with my friends, now it's just anger all the time everywhere. I mostly just use Facebook and Twitter for PSN and Switch image dumps now. Since Sony PS4 no longer lets us Stream or upload directly to Facebook, I have to use Twitter as a middle man because they do. If it was not for that, I would not be anywhere near that Cesspool. YouTube also not sending stream links to Facebook anymore is also dumb. Don't like how YouTube does not send email notifications per video upload either. I won't go anywhere near Twitch or Rejectera. Game FAQs should take note from NeoGaf and shut down their CE and Politics boards. Reddit is weird because one second you share a thing, and everyone loves you and upvotes you to Heaven, then the very same or similar thing you share gets downvoted to Hell and silenced instead.
