BEcause Sony oleds have vrr problems and lack support too for most models. I guess they don't want it to look bad
I’ve suspected this for a while. The only reason they haven’t enabled VRR for PS5 yet is because it’ll draw attention to the fact that their own TVs don’t yet have VRR but their competitors do.

just imagine the clickbait headlines: “Surprisingly, Sony’s TVs just became the worst display for your Sony PlayStation 5!”

Sony is waiting for HDMI™ to update their CEC, so PS5 won't get VRR until then.
OFC, it's a rumour from Robert Zohn, but if he's right - the CEC protocol on all Sony devices needs to be updated, including PS5.

The linked news article mentions PS5, but shows as source an tvs related interview with a tv guy about Sony TVs targeting to get VRR support this December. He never talked about PS5, always has been talking about tvs.

wait, so is this some confirmation from sony about ps5 getting it or just talking about tvs?

Sony wont update the PS5 with VRR until their TVs supports it. They don't want you going out and buying a Samsung TV to take advantage of a PS5 feature that their TVs don't support.

I know, but as stated earlier - if the CEC protocol is to be updated for Sony TV's - all their HDMI 2.1 devices has to be upgraded.

Great but most games are 60 or 30 anyway.
And VRR only makes some sense above 40 and ideally above 60.
Otherwise it causes some gamma change or flicker on my tv (lg oled). But that's only an issue if there is a drastic fps change.
I wish 120hz mode would be possible to be used for 60fps games too. Because of lower lag and these tv's only have proper gamma at 120hz.

As far as 4k monitors go. Most have 40-60hz vrr and it disables below 40..
And ps5 does not support 4k @120hz full color
Above all, it makes sense for that 5% of gamers who owns VRR ready TVs. I will be one this fall or a bit later, depending from the choice. It will be a good thing to avoid noticing frame drops, which seem to be already very modest, in this new gen.

Idk. I didn't had this problem on 4k lg 27uk650 ips monitor. But it had no local dimming hdr and only 40-60hz range.
Most TVS do have hdr though but only more expensive models have hte vrr troublesome fald. Oleds are 1200usd already.
I would say, if someone has ps5, I feel it is more likely they want it on a nice expensive tv
Idk, I just find it funny people talk about the value proposition of consoles, then run out and buy a $2k tv.

Figured if you care that much about performance you would have a nice monitor already with your PC you could plug your PS5 into.
I will. Probably exactly 2000 euros :messenger_grinning_sweat:

But I will probably use it for at least ten years, like I'm doing with the Pana Plasma.
Hold onto that Plasma if you like retro gaming. They look amazing, and are very close to a CRT.
Not only a TV but also a nice 4k 144hz HDMI 2.1 monitor.

Makes sense if you have a nice PC.

What does the tv have to do with console?
I've got lg 48" c1 this year and I would get that no matter if I had ps5 or not.
I have ps5 and pc connected to it on the same desk. And the TV was 1400usd. That's 1900 with ps5.... PC alone was more than that probably :p

Absolutely. That was one of the most important reasons I chose it, both for gaming and for movies. But technology goes forward (resolution, HDR, color bit space, etc.), and it's time for me to make the jump. I chose oled as the next TV right because it's the closest to plasma/crt of the new tech.

Too bad they are not yet real rgb oleds, but if I wait for them, I coud find myself old before changing...

...and anyway I will not sell my old plasma:messenger_smiling_hearts:

Sony is full of shit. Their TVs can’t do it, but LG has for years. Update the implementation when they get the final spec then.

How many of you actually have a VRR ready display?

I'm seriously curious because I live in Brazil so I have no clue about the rest of the world

Thing that really rubs me the wrong way as a PS5 and X900h owner is that this is not coming from Sony themselves. Hire a comms department Sony. This is bad.

Better late than never. Sorely needed, should’ve had it on the PS5 and the A80J-A90J TVs at launch.

it really does allow for so much more breathing room with performance.

There aren't any 1440p "TV"s out there? Or maybe I've missed the news.

Either way, if Sony's costumer base pushed back they might change the tune, but I don't think that ever happens to them.

The VRR communication probably still happens over CEC even if you disable the rest of it. The console has to tell the TV somehow right? And I don't think this can happen just through the video signal, but maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think so. Xbox One X had VRR while CEC wasn't implemented at all. There's no link at all IMO between CEC and VRR. CEC is not new and is mostly (only) used to control devices with a single remote. I couldn't find anything about a new CEC version, last one was introduced with HDMI 1.3. VRR, ALLM and other gaming features introduced in HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 aren't managed by CEC in any way.

The only link I could see between CEC and VRR would be if Sony wanted to use a "CEC vendor specific command" that would trigger VRR (or some form of proprietary VRR) from a PS5 exclusively when linked to a Sony TV for example...

Hmm, alright. I thought maybe it used that to communicate the VRR configuration or something.
