Guys.

Keep in mind these chips are DESKTOP grade SSD's.

There is an entire generation of PCIe 5.0 interface SSD's coming soon that are graded for LAPTOPS and have significantly lower heat output.

If ya'll can wait until November, your PS5 fans will probably be quieter.
True.. and that may well work. I'm definitely not an expert on this, but..

Currently, on Playstation.com's website it lists:
"M.2 SSD requirements for PS5 consoles:
Interface
: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD"

No guarantee that PCIe 5.0 NVME working, though, it may very well.

LOL it's all good, dude. I laugh at this stuff almost as much as some others.

Almost ;)

Folks going to be loading up these fancy NVMe drives with their old PS4 games that will probably still load faster off a USB ssd, it’s a crying shame.

I’m glad the option is coming, I just don’t understand the rush to get a drive at this point. Unless CoD player…
Why would they load faster off of a USB?

Cornfused

1.3TB how? 667+500GB (assuming the 500GB are all available)=1,167GB...
Dale was likely referring to 1.3TB before the amount reserved by the OS I'd imagine since 825GB + 500GB is 1.325TB

edit: though that's not usable space so the post was off still like you pointed out

This is a weird comment.. you can use PCIE 4.0 drives in laptops.. Intel released their platform late 2020... there are laptops w/ 980 pros, and other mentioned drives in this thread...

And why do you think 5.0 drives would run cooler? lol.. either way, it's a Gen 4 slot, so paying for a Gen 5 drive, when Gen 4 drives will work just fine would be overkill.

Damn what's up with the read speed that's lower than expected for the 980 Pro 🤔
I think someone mentioned they had one, and it was lower, then they formatted it or did something (not sure what) and then installed it and the speeds were better?

PCIe 4.0 drives MAX OUT at a theoretical 7gbps. The Samsung 980pro and the WD are graded for 7gbps. It is absolutely maxing out the bus and throttling nearly 100% of the time. If that sounds "just fine" to you then I don't know what else to tell you.

PCIe 5.0 uses less power, are backwards compatible and have a higher max output speeds than 7gbps. If they throttle at 10.5gbps and are native temps at 8gbps, then your fan won't be overworked and your heat lower. It means the silicon won't be throttling and running hot during normal, standard usage. The new tech is built specifically to target laptop users with smaller footprints. That means cooler, faster and quieter.

Honestly your reply confused me.

Just wanted to come in here and say that proprietary media sucks. I am trying to buy a vita sd card and they are going for $120-200 for 64 GB cards. You can get third party 64 GB sd cards for less than $10.
From that lesson, you can see why Sony is taking the approach they are taking now. I remember the hell they caught in the press for both their PSP and Vita storage options.

Where are you getting any of this info? PCIe 5.0 uses less power? Huh? New tech build specifically for laptops? I've literally never read any of this about PCIE 5.0.. not saying it's not true, but a dozen or so articles on it failed to mention it.. link?

AND QUIETER? There are no moving parts bro lol.. they are silent.

Also PCIE 4.0 drives w/ a heatsink generally don't throttle at all, and can sustain their speeds really well....

And are designed to also work in laptops.

Long story short it's necessary to use a heatsink to stop the temps from going over 70°c.

The good news is that he was able to use even large heatsinks with the NVME cover off. He hasn't found anything wrong with doing that and those large heatsinks will still allow you to use the PS5s cover.

This is the one he used BTW. It won't fit with the NVME cover but you can use it with the cover off. I found it for 20$ on Amazon.

I was going to get the SN850, but even with the heat sink those babies run really hot. Decided to get a 2TB Aorus 7000s, much better heatsink and runs quite a bit cooler.

im waiting until someone cuts a hole in the case to install a huge heat sink. Regardless, looks like lots of options will work. Good stuff.
