Couldn't see a thread for this, but search isn't great or it might have a weird title. Request a merge if so!

  • Referred to as NGVR by Sony (next gen VR) - not PSVR 2
  • Will use Fresnel OLED screens with a 2000x2040 resolution per eye
  • 4K HDR display
  • FOV is 110 degrees
  • Uses Flexible Scaling Resolution in addition to Foveated Rendering which used in conjunction conjunction eye tracking both which aims to scale resolution based upon the user's concentrated view and reduces the strains on PS5 resources
  • Haptics are planned for the headset itself to reduce motion sickness and improve immersion
  • The new controllers will be packaged with every new NGVR headset at launch.
  • The controllers will include capacitive touch sensors, which are analogue based and can track the distance between your fingers and thumb. This is in addition to haptics and adaptive triggers which have already been announced
  • Sony want to move away from "VR experiences" and concentrate on AAA games with an aim to make hybrid games that are playable in both flat screen and VR. When those titles launch you can even select which version you want to download.
  • Nothing was mentioned regarding BC for PSVR1 but there is a push to remaster some PSVR1 games
  • launch plans will be revealed in early 2022.

Quite interesting, PSVR only had a handful of short experiences really and they definitely do need to support AAA VR modes for it to take off. I can definitely see games like GT7, Rockstars immersive sims and Resi series putting effort into this.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
looks amazing...and expensive>_>

I never had a PSVR before but this had me interested, just hope its not at ridiculous price.

I haven't used VR in ages. Is that fov good?
It's fine, it's about the same as my 4K HP Reverb G2. Paper spec FOV tends to be slightly less in practice, and there are sets with better FOV, some almost full human FOV, but this is enough to give a good experience. Foveated rendering will also be good, there are sets with good eyetracking already on the market, but they are very expensive still, so hopefully this news will help accelerate and mature the market faster.

Too bad it still comes with a cable.

Yeah, understandably wireless headsets like the Quest 2 is the hot thing now, but it's not a realistic option for Sony as it, of course, requires local processing. But for those mostly only into flight simulators and racing games etc; Cockpited games, the cable isn't much of an issue.

Sadly, I don't believe that. Except Resident Evil VII and Half Life Alyx I don't remember any other full AAA VR game until now.

Why?

Most people don't care about VR.

It sells in the millions.. The segment has been slowly but steadily growing. Expected market growth rate is over 20% annually. And in most cases VR hardware is not loss leading like videogame consoles, so why not. Only issue would be if it took too much focus from other things. But Sony is a pretty big company and I'm sure they can handle it..

Squadrons was pretty fucking awesome and it was a hybrid. I would argue the game is a lot better in vr (especially with hotas) but it was fine in a flatscreen as well.

Yeah I guess there are a few genres where it works like flying and racing, but in most cases it will probably result in a tacked on VR mode that doesn't really use all the possibilities and strengths that VR offers.

I can tolerate a single cable, over the mess that is hooked up for PSVR now. Who knows they may sell a separate wireless adaptor.
Yup. My problems with VR were:

1 - Shit ton of cables
2 - Locking you out of 4K even when in TV mode
3 - shitty resolution in the VR games (they literally looked like something out of a shitty CRT)
4 - Shit ton of cables
5 - Nausea

If the cable and shitty resolution thing goes away, I can see myself trained to lessen the nausea.

799.99, imo.

Probably between 399-499€.Although i don't see it being more than 399€(its unrealistic to be more expensive than console itself)

PS5 specs also look expensive but here we are with a monster specs for 399€.

I mean think about it.. Back in 2018/19 If you had written somewhere that PS5 will have Ryzen 8c/16t 3.5ghz, gpu comparable to rtx 2080,fastest ssd ever, 16gb gddr6 for 399€ you would probably be banned for trolling😅

Those "hybrid" games sound like absolute garbage. Two completely different ways to play, makes no sense.
Well, it can work for certain games, see RE 7.

In general, though, I´m at least sceptical.

PSVR was $400 without controllers or camera back in 2016 when PS4 Pro was also $400.

Add in the camera & move controllers and PSVR cost over $500 at launch.

PS5 VR will definitely include the controllers in the box and we know it has no external camera sensors.

The PS5 costs $500. And the Valve Index cost $1000. And this sounds very comparable to that.

My bet is it'll cost $500. It'll include the headset, the controllers, and a long ass USB-C cable.

They can do PS5 to PSVR2 streaming. Quest 2 works great streamed from PC. Everything here looks awesome but I have no interest having a cable going across the living room, I don’t even want it from the Quest to PC which is right infront of me.

And if this is expensive they need to get it connected to PC for Steam VR. Can’t expect many to want to buy a PS5+PSVR2 for like 2 or 3 big exclusive games per year.

How about Farpoint, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, Beatsaber, the Climb 1 & 2, Astros Rescue Mission and there are a bunch more I've forgotten. Some of these might straddle AA but they are still high quality experiences.

And this isn't a completely new idea, Eve Valkyrie, Wipeout Omega, Dirt Rally had both flat and VR modes and they were well integrated.

Amazing, I really like what they did with PSVR, this looks to be proper next generation console VR… whoohooo!

GT Sport. Skyrim. These are the kinds of games they are talking about. With the power of the PS5 adding a VR mode to more AAA flat games should be much easier.

In general, though, I´m at least sceptical.

It was alright in RE7 because it was an early VR game, but that's exactly the type of VR mode I'm worried about.

It's just the same game but in VR, which is still cool, but aiming with your head and having no control over hands/weapons takes a lot away.

Played Rick and Morty and my god, that was awful with the cable. Maybe Sony will offer an adapter later.

I second your concerns about the lack of direct control over your hands in RE VII but that was due to the Move controllers not having analog sticks, an issue PSVR 2's controllers won't share. I have a Quest 2 and am stoked to try its VRsion of RE IV, which is a taste of what RE VII might have been.

I'm disappointed by the fact that it won't be backwards compatible with PSVR1 titles (yes, it won't be BC).

I guess that I'll have to grab the current headset to play through DriveClub VR (which I purchased before the delisting) and other games that most probably won't be remastered. Hopefully Sony will release some nice bundles for the holiday season.

The poster child for a vr version surpassing the pancake in every way.

You spelt ‘best way to do it’ wrong.
The best VR games are hybrids.

Exactly.

The concern is weird. Anyone curious about it can literally see how it works right now.

Hitman 3. Blood & Truth.
I had Blood & Truth and I played a couple of levels. It was a bad and ugly game for me, not what I understand for a AAA game. It was a some sort of Time Crisis for me, not a deep experience.
I dind't tried Hitman 3.

This sounds amazing to me. Can already imagine a Days Gone in VR, would be dope! Only reason I'd buy a PS5 at this point.
