[DF] PS5 Firmware 2.0 Tested

I have x570 motherboard and run 480 and 960 gb 3.0 corsair mp510 drives.
These came without any heatsinks (just stickers).
I made a fun test...

Normally both run at 42 and 44c. (hotter one is 480gb between cpu and gpu).
When I stress GPU 100% (3080fe so it goes 80c), the 480gb ssd goes 60c... understandable.
Then I start to USE it and copy 30gb file (just on itself) and the temp after just few seconds goes to 72c, and transfer speed drops from over 1gb to 300...200..100... 3mb/s lol. The drive dies and only recovers when I let it cool down.

so I OBVIOUSLY need a heat spreader on it... I have one from my motherboard so will attach it tomorrow. I don't need to remove ssd sticker, right ?

That is kinda disappointing. I have p600s with be quiet silent wings 3 fans... and apparently I cannot use my pc 100% without it almost dying aside from gpu. 3080fe does perfectly fine at 80c, just a bit loud.
Then I repeated the test with also stressing cpu to 100% and it was 83c, and copying was even quicker to get hot and throttle

Ps5 SSD redeemed as the fastest SSD in existence.... Wait.... What???!!!
Since I know you are a PC person....

Take a $4000 specced PC with a RTX 2060 in it....replace it with a RTX 3080.

Please tell us what happens when you do this.....

For ppl that claim to be so informed....some of yall are really showing your ignorance in here.....

Sounds like you should consider something like this

iu

Cools a lot better than the thermal pad + aluminium cover of my mobo(Zenith II Extreme Alpha), 64C down to 51C with 980 Pros during heavy CPU and GPU use.

Should be even cooler with gen 3 NVMes since those don't get as hot as gen4.

Basically what's happening in the PS5s case. If the drive is slower it will be slower if it's faster it will be faster.

Seeing the drives work really well in the PS5 is actually a good thing. There was some fear of compatibility issues but thankfully the I/O complex interacts quite easily with whatever drive it works with.

A bit dissapointed in this I wanted them to test the slowest compatible NVME drive they could find and see how games perform and load.

The heatsink results were better, which makes me wonder if the internal ssd isn't overheating.

So I guess everyone saying the internal was superior to commercial drives can now apologize.

This sounds loud just as I look at it :p
I will try with heatsinks first. You know if I have to remove the sticker from drive? I think these stickers are thermal spreaders already

It's whisper quiet actually. No way you hear it over any CPU/GPU air cooler.

I left the stickers on mine.

Looks like there is a budget SSD in the PS5 🤣 /sarcasm

I thought they already explained that.

Edit: Yeah they actually did. It's why Sony went with soldered chips and 850GBs of storage. The SSD was designed on a budget but they wanted high speeds from it. I guess they did it.

Not that strange when you think about it, the internal storage is also running the OS which does a lot of reads( and writes?) in the background on the same drive which is something the external drive doesn't have to deal with.

For ppl confused as to why the M.2 is performing faster...

Internal is 5.5GB/s....M.2 is 7GB/s.

If the M.2 was worse...that would be bad.

Thats like a PS5 revision with a 7GB/s drive being slower than the og model.

.....that would be bad....

While I appreciate what DF did here, slower drives are what I'm more interested in.

The PS5s drive is rated at 5.5GB/s. Drives rated higher than that are obviously going to perform better.

You didn't believe that 5.5GB/s was the limit for SSDs so I don't see why this is an issue.
But everyone was claiming that the 5.5gb of the ps5 was actually 9 or 22gb/s. The ssd was being boasted in performance by console warriors as some unique thing that would make games impossible to be played anywhere else.

Now we know that isn't the case.
seeing that new tvs are adding it as a viewing option is awesome , i have a ultrawide , but will be looking at 8k next , i know qled and such is the new oled rival , but i think sony are bringing eled soon... like oled but bright as the sun.

eled is from what i can remember , electric something. Correct??

the futures bright..
Why do people want such bright displays?

I keep mine at 20% backlight. I don't want to have to wear sunglasses.

You obviously don't know what your talking about.

After decompression that typically becomes 8 or 9 gigabytes but the unit itself is capable of outputting as much as 22 gigabytes a second if the data happened to compress particularly well.

The 5.5GB/s is raw data.

And in the end what was given was peak performance.

It's funny cause several people have been saying this. You know this already. You know, you don't have to be a PC person, or well informed, to understand how funny/ironic this is.

Instead of testing the likes of RE8 and other proper PS5 releases, they decided to test unoptimized, low effort ports and PS4 games. DF stays sucking.
Yeah thought the same. What was the fucking point in testing ps4 games instead of proper ps5 games.
Terrible test

People should stop to give so much credit to DF for such stuff. It's the gossip girl of the videogames technology, nothing more.

Personally I'm frankly tired how DF mixed a lot of tech chats in their videos forgetting any kind of analytic perspective. I take for example the series X actual faster speed in the SSD usage; it's multiplat coded, of course it's faster, it's matter of virtual coding how to have to access to the actual data.

So making a joke about it is worse than the people who believed it's the fastest SSD, and anything you add to the expansion bay will be inferior by a landslide?

Come on, you know the second one is way worse. I'm just pointing that out, in a joke form. No need to get butthurt about it... Unless I'm describing you in my previous comment....

Mmh… wilfully ignores over a year of discussion on this topic and posts something trying to bust people’s chops / rile others up with and gets the data behind it wrong while calling other system warriors… The XSX’s SSD is rated at 2.4 GB/s while PS5’s one SSD is rated at 5.5 GB/s…. This was well known.

If you take into account the fact that the data you are transferring is compressed you can then take the average and theoretical peak compression ratios to calculate the equivalent bandwidth these systems would would have: Xbox having 4.8 GB/s average and 6+ GB/s peak while the PS5 has ~8-9 GB/s average and 22 GB/s peak (maximum rate for the Kraken decoder).

I mentioned nothing about the xbox solution; the xbox drive being slower is a known fact. I was referencing console warriors thinking the ssd in the ps5 was faster than what's available on PC.

A tad later than when the system was presented by Cerny’s Wired interview and it just proves his point that the expansion bay and betting on open PC HW to extend storage was a good pro-consumer decision as even the very high end setup he went for with PS5’s design was going to be met by the PC industry (if you think about when the interview occurred and think about “our strategy is to get you to buy an SSD on the market that meets or exceeds our internal drive specs” you can understand how some people doubted that… but that is the pleasure of working directly with the drive makers and knowing what they have in the pipeline).

The additional SSD is still benefitting from the SSD controller DRAM cache and all the custom HW (two co-processors, SRAM cache, DMA controller, coherency engines, etc…).

It was and in a lot of cases in practice it still is (or uses a lot less CPU resources to achieve it). Not sure what similarly priced PC you had in the early 2020 timeframe with those specs and with all the dedicated HW Sony added on top of it 🤷‍♂️.

Impressive results indeed! The I/O has been really optimized for these m.2 drives.
Betting on open HW paid off… you have plenty of drives, flexibility in terms of performance targets, and price is reasonable and already lower than XSX’s solution. XSX’s memory expansion choice has not produced a single other supplier behind the proprietary expansion card in the same timeframe by the way.

MS’s solution is easy to install, can be carried around, and you can more easily buy several of them to have your giant game collection all stored on separate expansion memory cards. You could then simply swap cards to have your library divided in 1 TB sized “windows”.

You could do the same on PS5, but it requires far more time to do so… or you wait for prices to fall and buy yourself a 4 TB SSD that meets the requirements and enjoy your very very large storage.

On both consoles you can probably simply save a lot of money by simply having only one “expansion” of 1 TB and then a very large external mechanical disk as long term backup.
The console could keep track of what is available in your library but it is in a disconnected drive for example to make it a bit easier to browse without that drive being active at all though.

Well my plan is a 512GB drive paired with a much larger external for cold storage. Should be very inexpensive to set that up.

I'm guessing 150$ in total. 100$ for the 512GB drive and 50$ for the large external. I've seen a 1TB go for 50$ but I could probably build my own for even less.

Well written! I don't need to expand any time soon, but if I do I think 512GB is plenty, 1TB max.

The 9GB/s and 22GB/s doesnt come from just the physical drive tho....

The PS5 SSD is....once again....5.5GB/s

.......thats the point......

Like....how do ppl think the compression, decompression speeds happen......

Nobody said that the SSD by itself would typically have a throughput of 9GB/s. There's a decompression block.

But of course console warriors always resort to misrepresenting what was discussed.

Thank you.

Whats amazing is Cerny went over...all this....in The Road to PS5.

All this.

All this.

Also people need to realize that the NVME doesn't function by itself. In this case it's interacting with the custom I/O hardware. It shouldn't be a surprised that it's working well with PS5 games.

This.

They forget to test gameplay too.

Like why not ask developers who were on Twitter where they should test in the game? Like the mining section is very tasking because it loads entire levels in a instant. Also pocket dimensions are also seen hitching as you pass through those also could be tested. I know at least 3-4 levels where probably there's a lot of taxed instances.

it even has coil whine on top of PS5's own coil whine smh

guess adding m.2 does make PS5 more noisy afterall...
i never hear my consoles make noises

but its the summer time and i always have a fan blowing/air conditioner on so that may have something to do with it

What's inside the PS5 is still faster than anything you can get on a PC. The raw speed of a PCI Express 4.0 SSD is just part of the equation, the real star doing the heavy lifting of compressing/decompressing the data is the i/o subsystem inside of the PS5. This allows the drive to actually achieve its potential throughput, as the PC even today is incredibly bottlenecked to the point there's not much benefit from going from a SATA SSD to a NVMe SSD.

This won't change until Direct Storage and such come out.

Pretty much.

Once PCs has those I/O upgrades then they will be able to achieve what the PS5 does with it's soldered drive and NVMEs.

This test that Digital Foundry did only proves what the PS5 does with the NVME not what PCs can do with it. Again PCs will get there with RTX I/O and Direct Storage.

It undoubtedly plays a part but Squeenix got FF7 load times down from 12s to 2s just by refactoring their loading systems to take advantage of the SSD. They only mentioned compression in terms of helping to keep the install size down and with higher res textures.

On a side note, Doom Eternal does load faster on NVMe than SATA SSDs on PC. We're only talking like 2s vs 6s but it is very much possible to improve loading on SSDs without the new APIs and decompression units. Those exist to improve on that even further.
