Norman Reedus: "I think we're doing a second Death Stranding, negotiations are already happening"

200.gif

I love Death Stranding and it was original and really innovative in many ways. I loved the meta-commentary it had on gaming....with each item requiring to be physically brought around with you instead of having a magic pocket like most gaming hero's, the princess beach / peach stuff and the hat with abilities to float in water etc.

The game was picturesque and interesting and the combat was quite MGS-like in many ways, I think that the inconvenience of the consequences of combat turned many casual Kojima fans off though.

This is a true Kojima game, for true fans of his ideas and gameplay. Of course some people were going to be turned off by it but there is a huge number of gamers who are unhappy nomatter what you do....

Maybe if it had more constant shooty shooty bang bang, it might have been more popular, if it had the slow motion headshots with gore and awarded you for kills or something..... but don't we have enough of those games?

People constantly say we don't get enough different, original stuff but then when someone invests and makes something truly risky, the same people are there to shit on that too.... truly frustrating.

Yup. Easily my GOTY 2019

That being said, I don't know if this game really needs a sequel. It would feel out of place since the game told such a compelling/emotional arc with one of the best endings I've ever experienced in gaming.

Making a sequel just seems unnecessary and not sure how they could recapture the original innovative magic without feeling formulaic.

Hell yes, I would love this to be true!
I always feel that I should qualify any positivity about this game with an "I understand that it's not for everybody" but it was absolutely entrancing for me and probably the most Hideo Kojima game that I've for a very long time.

I don’t understand why, but that’s fine.

Games are going to happen if I like them or not.

Kojima has a good hustle going and I can’t fault him for that.

I'm a fan, but seeing what they put in the Director's Cut i'm afraid he will go down the action route instead of doubling down on the unique parts of the game.

And the horror game would be more exciting tbh

We're still all pretending this was really good are we?

Look.. I'll give it a lot of props for:
Having an interesting story
Having amazing graphics
Having the balls to do something very different with the gameplay

But... Come on....
This wasn't his best effort. Also didn't Death Stranding not sell the best, are Sony going to greenlight another one?

What's the betting its going to be another publisher or a different game entirely because let's face it Norman Reedus doesn't have a clue

I'm gonna give the directors cut a really good second go. I think the jetpack and stuff will help massively.

Queue the hard-core fans saying that I haven't experienced the true version of the game because I didn't walk everywhere haha.

I hope it’s not true. Death Stranding was already so bloated and endless… I know there are real fans who are super happy about this but I can only see it as a waste of resources and budget. Please move on from this Kojima.

Considering this review was translated from Portuguese, I'm wondering if he was just referring to a new Kojima game.
I'm thinking between the translation and
What Norman Reedus knows about gaming( not much) and
What he's told ( probably not much)
And if Sony is willing to publish a sequel or an entirely new game

If I'm a betting man I'm thinking this is an entirely new Kojima game with Norman Reedus in it.

With the creative freedom Kojima has now I'm willing to think he's not going to be a sequel man.

It sold 5 million copies, and the Director's Cut sales will be on top of that. 5 million copies at $40 each is $200,000,000. Assuming it cost them $100 million (which is considerably more for a game developed by ~60 people in 3 years), that's an ROI of 200%.

For comparison, Bloodborne sold around 3 million copies. Control sold 2 million copies. Sekiro sold 5 million copies on all platforms. All these games are celebrated and considered successful. Remedy is even working on a bigger Control sequel now. So why not another game in the Death Stranding universe by Kojima?

Because he might not want to do sequels? What you say would be true for any future game Kojima Productions puts out.

If he wants to move on to a new IP, that's cool as well. I was replying to the person who thought the game didn't sell well, and that's why it doesn't warrant a sequel. That's not true. The game may not get a sequel, but that'd be more of a creative choice, not because of its lack of commercial success.

The man takes risk. Without people like him any originality in the industry will be dead. His games look beautiful, are always well polished, are always filled with dynamic elements and are always well thought. Everybody laughed at the world of death stranding but the reality cought up. I think he needs to tone down on micromanagement aspects of his games and also try to contain the story without tangential bloaty plot points. Death Stranding was a meaningful good game but it did fall short on many fronts.

I think this may be true as well. I don't think a man like Kojima will want to do sequels.

Look at his Metal Gear games even, none of them are similar to the other. All with different protangists more or less, different gameplay styles.

Would love to see another one. Worst part of DS was the MULEs. Hopefully they either aren’t in the second game or aren’t as annoying and tedious.
What mules? those npcs where so inept that the arsenal you get becomes irrelevant a couple of hours in, if anything, the mules should've of been a stronger threat.

My Portuguese sucks, but the translation seems pretty straightforward. Could Norman be mistaken? Of course.

Another publisher for DS proper is out of question, IP is Sony's property.

I kinda feel like they will have to change so much for the sequel, it would be DS in name only. We'll see.

It's been 2 years since Death Stranding and I bet he already started work on project before finishing DS.
So we could have a project already 3 years into dev... or two projects, who knows.
For sure he did not spent last 2 years idle. The directors cut, however cool it is, is not 2 years of work for the whole team.

Kojima should have done a new horror game he doesn't need the Silent Hill IP, Silent Hill games have been selling like shit the last few. A new horror IP by Kojima would have got people hyped.

So what have Kojima Productions been doing up til now?

If negotiations are being done now about a sequel, I’d say that’s an indication that something else is under production but that development is starting to come to a close or is pretty far into development…

Death Stranding entered full development in 2017 and was released in 2019 so if they keep the same pace in this hypothetical secret project it should be pretty close to release unless COVID impacted the development a lot.

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
The results from the first death stranding warrant a sequel it’s a super masterpiece that shows Kojima can do stuff other than Metal Gear Solid.

Sadly some project of his feel through at some point in the meantime, so it could be a time sink. Still hope you're right.

Honestly the story of the first wrapped everything up so perfectly. A sequel seems like overkill given the conclusion of the first game.

  • One horror project that fell through
  • Death Stranding PC port and support
  • Death Stranding Director's Cut
  • Preparing pitch for this second game
  • COVID and lockdown
I think all of that ended up consuming two years. Unfortunate, but it is what it is.

The game is just so good… one of the very best I ever played.

A sequel is really something to look at.
Side note, would a completely different environment work? Desert? Flooded plains?

A dense forest / jungle I can’t see being a great option for example.

Doubtful, preproduction usually can run parallel to things like DLC in most studios, if anything, the preproduction for next game pitches probably started before shipping Death Stranding.
