PS5 console will not play certain games and also sometimes overheats...any ideas?

EDIT: I have already sent the console in to Sony for repair. They sent it back without doing any repairs saying they found nothing wrong with it.

To be clear here I'm just wondering if anybody else has had or is having this issue, or has an idea of what's happening. I've already described the issue and sent my console in for repair. Sony found nothing wrong with it and sent it back without any repair. I already tried all the normal things like reinstalling the OS and factory resetting and such. Same issues remain.

So what happens is my launch PS5 will crash after anywhere from a minute to 45 minutes or so but only for some games. Examples of games I know I cannot play are Resident Evil 8 (PS5 version only, the PS4 version will work on the PS5), Arcadegeddon, and Ratchet & Clank. These are just the games I own I know won't work. I'm sure there's countless more. Games I know I can play without issue are Fortnite and Genshin Impact (PS5 versions).

What happens with the games I can't play is I'll load one of these games and usually within 10 minutes the game will crash with error code CE-108255-1. This is a generic error code and happens fairly regularly with all games. The issue is it will happen with the games I mentioned 100% of the time making them unplayable.

The other issue I have is that my console will sometimes overheat at the point where the power cord plugs in to the point it will burn you if you hold your finger on it. It gets extremely hot. There doesn't seem to be a direct connection with the overheating and the error code crashing. Sometimes the power cord receptacle area will be a perfectly normal temperature when the crashing happens. It may of course be indirectly related but I have no idea. Also there is no overheating message whatsoever when the power cord area does overheat. Sometimes the console will suddenly power off though with absolutely no warning at all. It simply powers off the same as if you were to pull the plug out from the back of it.

So, any ideas?? Anyone else having these crazy issues?

TL;DR PS5 will not play certain games and will crash with an error code within minutes when I try. Console will also seemingly randomly get extremely hot at the point where the power cord plugs in to the point it will burn you if touched. These 2 issues don't seem directly related.

That sounds defective to me and potentially dangerous regarding the plug part.

Can you return it to wherever you bought it from still? Or is Sony your only chance for warranty? I would 100% look for a replacement before it gets bad

It's dead Jim

Contact Sony and send it back for repair or replacement under warranty.
As I said I did that. They found no issue with the console and sent it back unrepaired after nearly a month lol. I'm more just wondering if anybody has the same issues or knows what could possibly be going on.

I already sent it in to Sony. Apparently nothing is wrong with it (according to the letter they sent back with it). They sent the same console back unrepaired. I imagine when the damn thing starts a house fire and they're sued they'll change their tune?

Did you include a note detailing the issue and your copy of RE8?

Yeah they’re just fobbing you off mate. Don’t let them. How is a console that turns itself off regularly not faulty?

contact them again, I'd bet they wont test it and send you a new one.

Any issues with that power cable? Obviously the heat is coming from somewhere so if the PS5 is supposedly fine (which seems unlikely) then Sony is telling you the device is definitely not pulling too much power from the wall and is definitely not delivering too much power to components leading to an overheat.

Is there any way to try a different power cable or a different outlet/surge protector and see if things behave differently? I'm still leaning towards the PS5 being the issue but it's worth a shot.

I'm also very poorly versed in all things electrical, but I know there's only a few ways a cable can get that hot so if it's not a cable defect, the console is pulling too much power and that's a problem.

have you tried using another power outlet? Are you using a cheap surge protector power bar ?

Where is the console placed? is it in an open space ? do you see anything that would cause it to overheat ?
I have another PS5 in the house that works perfectly fine. I've tried different outlets putting it in open space etc. It's some issue with the console itself, apparently nobody has any idea what exactly though.

I'm trying another power cord right now. I don't remember if I tried that before sending the console in. It's the only thing I can immediately think of if they found no issue with it (since you dont send in your own power cord, only the console itself). I've already tried different outlets etc. and same issue. I have another PS5 that works perfectly fine.

Dude, that sounds bad, like for some reason your PS5 is not able to dissipate all the heat. Contact SONY as soon as possible. Looks like a defective unit. What is happining to your PS5 is not normal, that much I can assure you.

Have you tried a different power cable? A different power outlet?

I had an issue with my Series X when I first got it where it would sudden power off when playing a game. I switched from a power strip to a UPS with battery backup and the problem went away.

Yes told them over the phone and with a note with the console. Did not send them a copy of RE8. You just send in the console itself when you send it in.
If it was me, I would have done. How are they supposed to replicate the issue if you didnt include the software? There are loads of cases of games like Returnal not working on the console. Definitely something wrong with the PS5 hardware.

If any part of your ps5 gets too hot to touch, stop using it, unplug it and contact support for warranty. This is pretty sound advice for pretty much every piece of electronics you could own.

Don't know where you are from but I'd continue complaining to Sony and I'd demand a solution. Get whatever institution is responsible for consumer protection involved if possible.
If you got it from some retail store try contacting them too. I often saw cases like this when I worked retail, manufacturers would send back clearly defective units claiming they found no issues. In those cases I could usually get the higher ups in the customer service department of the company to get involved which often helped.

try updating the drivers and reinstalling windows

A couple of issues there is that it's a launch day console and I bought it directly from Sony lol. So I don't know that they will be any help.

So the repair center plugged it in and it booted, probably put a disc in, unplugged, packed and sent it back.

You definitely should be calling them again. Also check out r/consolerepair. Someone has probably seen this issue.

This is the worst case scenario. When console (or anything else) is half-dead. I have had this in the past with different pieces of electronics. Took multiple returns, hassle over the phone, email to get it sorted out. Look. If you can find the way to kill it completely without voiding the warranty.

Good luck.

Thats what I was thinking. Do I just let the thing overheat until it finally takes a complete shit or catches fire?? If some tech just plugged it in and everything was immediately "working" they probably just phoned it in and said welp everything is good! Definitely no overheating here! I think part of the problem is the PS5 is overheating randomly and the system isn't looking for the power cord area to overheat, it's probably monitoring some other area of the console, so that's probably why I don't get any overheating error messages (which is whats supposed to happen when it overheats).

Thanks, posted in the PS5 sub (r/PS5) and I dont think mods are allowing it to be seen. I guess I'll try r/playstation as well. Posted to consolerepair.

its defective. get it replaced. i havent even had a single error on my PS5 yet and been using it alot since i got it 2 months ago.
I know and I'm trying. Already sent it to Sony who just sent it back saying it was operating normally...

I've definitely had that error code on multiple PS5s on multiple games. It happens whenever a game crashes for whatever reason. That is relatively normal. The issue here is it happens 100% of the time (usually within 10 or so minutes) on certain games on this one PS5 console to the point the games are unplayable. That's obviously not normal.

What country are you located in ? A Plug which is HOT to the touch is not the console overheating its too much current being drawn from the outlet and the outlet is heating up. If the console was drawing too much power the entire cord would be hot.

You either have too many thing plugged into that outlet and the wireing is pulling more amps then is rated for or your power is not clean. Try another socket and also try turning everything off except your TV & console or bring it over a friends home and try it there. Power can also be the reason your console is crashing.

Yeah its the last thing I can think of is that the PS5s power cable itself is somehow faulty. Like I said I have another PS5 in the house which works perfectly fine. So right now I'm trying that PS5s power cord with the "faulty" PS5 console to see if the original cord itself was somehow the issue. As for the outlets and such I don't know I just have a regular power bar and everything else (including the other PS5) have all been fine. I've tried the faulty PS5 on multiple outlets though

I dont know but on my PS5 that actually works I've had the issue maybe 8 or so times in the 6 months I've had the console. So it's not too frequent but it happens.

it used to happen frequently on my PS4 but it was largely dependant on the game i was playing. been surprised at how smooth the PS5 is so far but i have only had it 2 months.

Did you actually try the one which is working in the same exact outlet as the one which is failing ? I would first try swapping them in their entirety and see if the problem follows the console or the location. Then try swapping cords (If its following the console)

only issue i had was playing Demons Souls. having the disc in. Sometimes my PS5 would sound like a jet engine and blow out hot air like a space heater.

i saw some suggestion about turning off USB charging while in rest mode or something. And that seemed to fix whatever was happening

As far as I know Sony has repair centres where you are based and there seems to be some sort of corruption / mis-management with the place it's going to for repair.

Where do you live? I would contact Sony and complain about the repair service as nothing was done, also take videos of your problem and get an email or something to send them to. There is more you can do with a little persistence. It sucks but fight it and don't give up.
