GAF you are so disappointing. At the same time you laugh at Sony for that 'we believe in generations' meme, you refuse the pay them for their efforts on 'next gen' consoles.

You are nothing more than entitle kids wating everything for free because for some reason you think you deserve it.

Do you really think 'voting with your wallet' and make sony dont give a shit about next gen enhacements is the way to go?

You are gonna have a very rough time when you finally grow up lmao
It's not about entitlement, it's about giving your customers a sense of value and quality of life perks. The person who bought a PS5 at $500 and Horizon on PS4 for $60 doesn't deserve to just have the PS5 version? You really think it's a good idea for Sony to casually slap customers with a $10 fee who just invested over half a grand in their platform?

But hey I get it, you are a rabid fanboy who is fine with your favorite company nickel and diming their users at every turn. Just don't call people entitled who speak out against it.

And radical fanboys will not say anything but if Microsoft does it or EA does it or Ubisoft does it. It’s an issue. The damage control is real. This is why companies like EA or Ubisoft get away with so much bullshit
No shit batman, the whole point of fanboys like fanatical sports followers, religious fanatics etc is they can see no wrong with their side, it's all down to being a cunt, most normal people like myself who have been a Sony fan for years can see that Sony are being dicks and that Microsofts route is completely gamer centric and an absolute plus for the consumer.

This thread is definitely up for thread of the month. Sony announced the showcase first then try slipping this news after hoping its overlooked. But its gained as much traction as the showcase announcement lol.

What is your deal? There is tons of criticism going on all over the internet. ANd a good amount by level headed people here, me included and IM a big Sony guy. I think what they are doing is confusing, they should just be more clear and either make a easy upgrade path. It can be paid or free choice is up to them.

I think if your buying the game on PS4, then have them pay $10 for PS5 upgrade and call it a day.

Yup.

What should have been a week to build up massive Sony hype (Horizon 2 pre-order, next week a huge event), Sony lost some of the narrative for some bullshit $10 upcharges. The return on those can't possibly be worth the continued PR hit... whether it be this game or the next, they will have to start walking back some of these decisions.

Hopefully with enough traction like the PS3/VITA store closing issue Sony reverts it. And hopefully after 2 instances heads start either rolling or people in power making these decisions start getting called out internally by company people who know these are shitty decisions.

The issue is the apologists making excuses for this shit. Easily could just charge $70 for the Ps5 version and let it include the Ps4 version and thats that.

Its even worse they said there would be free upgrades pre launch and are now acting like they never said that.

I think part of this is internally their store in how it handles different version content is a mess database wise. I dont know if anyone went through the FFVII hastle but that alone was confusing especially when they gave it away free on PLUS.

I have the PS4 physical version, bought the intergrade dlc and it still downloaded PS4 content then a second download happened that turned it into PS5 version. But if you downloaded the PS+ free FFVIIR version you could not get free PS5 upgrade.

So dumb. ANd I think its because of how they handle the different databases for PS4/PS5 versions of games.

Yea I don't understand that. Something similar with the Greedfall update happened iirc.

More backlash for shit like this is needed. Look at ms eliminating used games or even recently doubling the price of gold or Sony closing vita/ps3 stores. Instantly got put off due to the backlash.

Here's your post about the recent Quake release on PC and consoles that Nightdive worked on:
WHo the **** asked for this?? And why is people paying for it?
I already answered your questions back then but I think your recent post works indirectly as a funnier, ironic answer.

They should at least have a $10 upgrade for the PS4 users who will purchase a PS5 later.

That being said, a free upgrade for the PS4 version makes no sense. PS5 users would just buy the PS4 version instead.

Then the bigger question is then the difference in price would not hold any merrit. Which is why they are trying to do this weird "Next gen features" that you pay for. I think honestly if any more releases do this without it being a directors cut like Death stranding, then they are going to have to make some kind of policy change.

Hopefully not. We are all willing to pay full price for both separately. Sony needs the money

I skipped Ratchet and Returnal, skipped the Ghost DLC because of the $10 upgrade, and it looks like I'll have to skip this one as well.

Maybe I'll get them down the road after multiple price cuts. It's just not something I can support at full price. My PS5 is turning out to be largely useless, which is a real shame.

If you want to enjoy games with better fidelity for free after upgrading your hardware, you should play on the Xbox or PC, not PS5. On PS5 we are expected to pay full price for better fidelity or DualShock support, and we are happy to do so.

Do what I did. Buy them at $70. Trade them in for $40. Gamestop has been pretty good about offering trade in values for these games. I traded in Ratchet after a month and still got $40. Demon Souls after five months and still got almost $40.

I am actually ok with paying $70 for next gen only games like Returnal and Ratchet. What bothers me is that they are charging $70 for cross gen games. $10 extra for what basically amounts to high settings presets on PC is just icky. For Ghost it was 4kcb 60 fps and dualsense support. For Horizon, the upgrades are literally just hero lighting around Aloy and better looking waves along with native 4k and 60 fps modes. That should not be worth an extra $10 in this day and age. Maybe, if her character model was different, she had better hair like how Lara Croft used TreesFx back in the day in next gen versions, or more destruction or simply more NPCs etc. But from their own words, it's literally the same game with the same visuals and the hero lighting is the only thing thats exclusive to the PS5 version. That's just not enough to justify the next gen tax.

Also realistically if you're buying the PS4 version now for $60 and picking up a PS5 a year from now Horizon will most likely be at the bottom of a bargain bin or at least heavily discounted by then. STILL SHITTY but something to note.

Sadly that's not necessarily true anymore. Sony have become a lot more stingy with their prices and sales.
Ghost of Tsushima took over a year to drop to $30 on sale and even then it only did so in physical format, and that was originally $60. So there's a pretty good chance that a year from now you won't be able to get Horizon for less than $50, and that's on sale.

My take is I don’t think consumers should be charged for what essentially is a #define argument in a config file.

Most of these PS5 features are functions you call an API. So for a 5 min job at some point in the development of the game theset a config for both platforms. Depending on the SDK it runs that specific config.

As I suspect this is just a BC game with additional features tagged on for PS5. So another Ghost of Tsushima.

Full developed games for only PS5 charge 70£ but not for adding the PS5 logo to the box art on PS4 games.

Or do what people have said in other posts, charge 65£ for both, that way there is no price discrepancy and no one can moan.

So this is my opinion on the matter, so others will differe but from programming it’s as simple as #define in the source files.

I'm not that okay with the $70 in general. Just being honest, I will probably cave on FFXVI. I caved on Demon's Souls. I will probably get God of War, since that was my GOTY.

But I was never a Ratchet fan, but was interested. I still never played Horizon 1, so it's not that urgent for me. I'll try that out with the new patch and I can wait for years if need be. I don't like most Naughty Dog games. I'm swimming in stuff to play on other systems, so for now it's not killing me. I'll just replay Ghost someday without the upgrade path also.

The principle of it really sours me. I get most people wont react that way, but I actually do. I jumped to 360 after they launched cheaper and had innovative features. I jumped back to PS3 when they started to catch up and seemed very pro-consumer with PS+ free games. I skipped XBO because it seemed like a dumpster fire. I jumped back to Series S after the Gamepass, backwards compatibility and more. It kills my interest when the company seems out to get me, and I have to ration how much I am mentally allowing myself to enjoy something - because I know that will be exploited. At that point I largely check out. PS5 is still going to worth it, but it's been a less than idea 1st year of ownership for me, and the decisions from management make me start to really resent the company.

Don't really get the thought process here. Why buy the PS5 in the first place? Sony said next gen games would be $70 before the console even come out.

I think people are overthinking this thing. But this is what Sony gets for making these games cross gen in the first place.

I think it is fair to say the biggest Sony mistake was to have a PS4 version of games.

They should focus all new releases on PS5 only.

You’re not alone. I hardly ever use mine anymore. I did put over 100 hours into Returnal though. My series X is just a better overall machine/experience, and Sony isn’t helping themselves with these idiotic pricing decisions.

Nah I get you. It's not just you. The sales of Returnal are really low at around 500k which is very odd considering there was really nothing else to play on the PS5. Ratchet is more respectable around 1 million, but still relatively low attach rates for a console thats approaching 10 million units. Those are not the kind of AAA games that make people go out, buy console and shell out top dollar. I always liked Sony for their flexible pricing structure. Lost Legacy, Ratchet remake and SOTC remakes were PERFECTLY priced at $40 on the PS4. Now they are asking $70 for remakes, cross gen games and smaller titles like Returnal? Eh.

We havent even gotten a whiff of Demon Souls numbers so they must be even worse than Returnal. Hopefully these underwhelming sales make them rethink their approach. the last launch exclusive KZSF reviewed much worse and yet sold 2.1 million in 6 weeks on the PS4. Infamous Second sold 1 million in 9 days. Even Knack sold a million. We are not seeing the same numbers for PS5 sequels. Maybe its because Ratchet, Returnal and Demon Souls arent considered AAA like KZ and Infamous and people like you arent willing to spend $70 on them like they would for FF and GOW.

I actually picked it up on a whim while getting groceries, and saw they had 1 in stock.

There will be games I'll want to play on it, even if I have to wait for price cuts out of principle. I also wasn't yet convinced Xbox was compelling until after their last E3. Got the PS5 in November 2020.

It's not all ideal, but it's fine. Having all 3 means I can play whatever I want. I am just frustrated with the way this is playing out. PS will still have lots of stuff I want to play, but I may end up waiting on a lot of it.

100 percent. Having all three allows you to play whatever you want, and unfortunately for Sony, im now no longer restricting myself to their hardware, so they’ll be making far less money from me on third party releases, and now I don’t feel compelled to buy their overpriced games when they launch.

The mental gymnastics by some fanboys in here to justify this bullshit, it blows my mind! Yeah, it wasn't like this before, previous gens you had no choice, but this gen it's different. Just because it started by a company you don't like, doesn't mean it's bad. Jesus fucking christ.

I didnt use my PS5 for almost five months this year. But then Returnal, the wonderful RE8 and Ratchet back to back brought me back into the eco system, and tbh I had a blast. When you are playing games and not just reading one greedy corporate decision thread after another, it is really not that bad. Cerny created an absolutely wonderful machine. I am not gonna lie. Returnal with Dualsense and 3D Audio was like a religious experience when I first put it on.

One thing i will say is that I just realized that I didnt play a single MP game all year. So not sure why I subbed PS+ for this whole year. Thats $60 down the drain. Sony needs to get better at releasing mp shooters in Spring or Summer for folks who arent into CoD.

The thing with Returnal, it ain't a super mainstream game in term of its punishing difficultity. I play it for a hour.. look nice then took it out and start RE8 instead and i have a blast. I end up trading the Retuirnal for Neo: TWEWY. Ratchet is fun but it is so short , 15 hours ish for $70.

3D audio hasn’t impressed me yet. I love the haptics, but I hate the advanced triggers. But the thing I miss the least when I’m playing on my X is how damn loud some games make my PS5. The newest update to Genshin Impact has made the coil whine unbearable. On X, even the most intense games like Flight Sim don’t evoke a peep from it. Just an amazing design IMO.

The sad part is technically they are offering a "free" PS5 upgrade so legally they're fine.

It just so happens to require buying an $80 "deluxe" PS4 game so its not really free in spirit, of course.

Its bullshit but they'll get away with it.

The problem is that they made little to no money on that $500 you spent. If anything they may have lost some money. To recoup that money they use PS5 game sales. Now by giving the PS5 version of the game when you buy the PS4 version they are losing money again by giving something that cost more to develop (the PS5 version). A double loss making the whole generation thing pointless for them. The $10 is to balance thier books. What I don't get is why the fuck they don't give the PS4 version free when you get the PS5 version. That just seems like stupid greed. It's not like you have lost anything for letting your customers play on their old machine.

Yep, he absolutely went back on this it seems. I don't think the price difference is a problem at all personally, but if they promised it would be free, it should be. And at a minimum that upgrade path should be there. People are still over reacting IMO, but what you are pointing out is absolutely true.
