The problem is that they made little to no money on that $500 you spent. If anything they may have lost some money. To recoup that money they use PS5 game sales. Now by giving the PS5 version of the game when you buy the PS4 version they are losing money again by giving something that cost more to develop (the PS5 version). A double loss making the whole generation thing pointless for them. The $10 is to balance thier books. What I don't get is why the fuck they don't give the PS4 version free when you get the PS5 version. That just seems like stupid greed. It's not like you have lost anything for letting your customers play on their old machine.
So the more I read about this and I just heard on Sacred Symbols that there's not even a $10 upgrade option on the base version of Horizon 2 on PS4. Meaning if you buy the game on PS4 for $60 when you finally get a PS5 you actually have to buy the whole game again as there is no upgrade path. Are they misinformed or is this actually true? If this is true then literally no one can defend this.

it's true. If you buy the ps4 version you have to buy the ps5 version separately.

Only way to very both versions is to buy the $80 deluxe edition

It seems to actually be true which is another greedy move in my opinion. Why not include an upgrade path instead of making people buy the Deluxe edition. I get that you might get extras in the deluxe edition but there is no need to remove options for the user.

The thread title should be changed then as this is much more egregious than just a $10 upgrade. The "for free" in the title makes the reader assume there is a potential cost but not 'rebuy the entire fucking game.'

None of these conversation wouldve happened if sony stick to their original plan by releasing this game only on PS5

Anyway for anyone of you getting this game on PS4 i wish you all the best with the handicapped version

This is bad. Looks like I will only buy be the PS4 version for myself. PS fans really need to fight back with this crap.
You can always do what Sony wants you to do.

Frontload buying the PS4/PS5 combo for $90 in anticipation when you get a PS5 (I'm assuming you dont have one yet), you want to replay the game.

Then again, if you dont get a PS5 or have no interest playing the PS5 version later after all, they still go your extra $20.

Because that would not be fair to PS5 only users.

$60 PS4 Game + $10 Upgrade PS5 Game = 2 editions for $70

$70 PS5 Game = 1 edition for $70

With the deluxe at $80 you get = PS5 Game $70 + PS4 Game $10 + Bonus Content $0 = $80

IMO, They should have just made this game a PS5 only game. They already sold 10 million PS5's so why continue to make your first party games cross gen? Doesn't make any sense at this point. Its really just greed on their part.

You can’t pay £10/€/$ to upgrade Horizon according to the blog. That’s the point. There is no upgrade path.

If you buy the PS4 version first for £59.99, then buy a PS5 later, you need to buy the whole game again for the PS5 at £69.99.

The fact that even the people defending PS here can’t seem to grasp what the issue is shows how confusing it is.
Wouldn't mind if the upgrade to PS5 cost $10 since I'm sure there's gonna be a big difference visually between both versions, but this is just fucked up and I can't believe these people thought this was a good idea. Gonna wait until I get a PS5 to get this game.

It looks like those who want both versions will need to purchase deluxe editions, which are $80+.

If they are going to handle it this way, there should at least be a $10-$20 upgrade path.

Telling PS4 owners to pay $80 for both versions is also handicapping those who don’t actually have or know when they’ll receive a PS5.

Anyways, there’s always future sales. I tend to never purchase above $40-$50.

The majority won’t care, will brush this under the rug, and buy this game day one as long as they feel Sony is continuing to deliver in the quality department.

Isn’t it the same with Ghost of Tsushima?
That's what I thought at first too. But it isn't just that the upgrade isn't free, but there is not upgrade path at all. So If you buy the standard PS4 version for $60, and then you want the next gen version down the line, you will will need to spend another $70. Or you can buy the digital deluxe version for $80, which includes both PS4 and PS5 versions. But if you want a disc version, I think you are out of luck. At least that's how I understand it. The convoluted pricing, in addition to making Sony seem greedy and petty, is also confusing.

Also the regular ps5 version doesn’t give the PS4 version.

People were super pissed when madden did that, so I’m sure they’ll go to war over this too, right?
There will be a few people who are upset. But this news will make others extremely happy. A surprising number of people love taking it in the ass from Sony and Jim Ryan.

True, the cheaper editions won't have free or paid PS4 to PS5 upgrade. The expensive editions will have free PS4 to PS5 upgrade.

If you buy a cheap version in PS4, you'll have to play the improved version of PS4 Pro in PS5 instead of getting the native PS5 version. If you want the native PS5 version you'll have to buy the full game again.

The development of this game started in 2017, so it started as a PS4 game and years later they improved it for PS5 when they got the specs and the devkits. The original plan never was to release it only for PS5. They announced it first for PS5 and later they mentioned it also was going to be released in PS4 due to marketing reasons.

It would be impossible to develop a game like this one in barely 2 years and on top of that to decide and port it to a previous gen console in less than a year while they are still developing it.

The expensive editions of the game have the free upgrade, so in some way it's true what they said.

Jim will say anything. He's been caught lying before. I have always said that execs set the standard and the fans simply follow their lead. When execs go out and lie and mislead, the fans will run with it. I still see people defend his we believe in generations remark, and people STILL believe that PS5 games wont come to PC even though Herman once said that Horizon going to PC doesnt mean every PS exclusive will go to PC. Well, now they are beginning to port everything to PC so go figure.

At the end of the day, it's business. If Sony is charging an extra $20 for two versions then fine. They are within their rights too. If they are making cross gen games. That's ok too. We aren't being forced to buy these games and after spending $100 million in R&D and marketing, its their right to decide if its next gen only or cross gen.

Just dont lie about it. Dont say they are built from the ground up on the PS5 only to have the director of the game say it was built on the PS4. Dont say we believe in generations only to say you are pleased about the cross gen situation two months later. Dont say games wont come to PC then port six more games and buy Nixxes a year later.

Be a man and take some criticism. Yes, Bryank2k will complain on gaf. Yes, TheAPP99 will throw his PS5 out the window on twitter. Yes, Slimysnake will bitch and moan over cross gen ports, but dont mislead these people for a year, and give your fanbase false hope. These people are still your fans. You wont lose us as long as you keep making games, but being lied to makes it personal.

What ppl was expecting... paying the lower PS4 price and get the same as the ppl paying more and getting the PS5 game???

The only fucked up thing is that buying the PS5 version you should also get the PS4 one... so ppl not having the PS5 yet could get that version instead of the overpriced deluxe one with lame extras

People were expecting it to be like what Sony did for Ghosts if anything.... Buy the $60 PS4 version, upgrade to PS5 for $10. This doesn't even have that. If you buy the $60 version of Horizon 2 and want the PS5 version you are fucked. There is literally zero defense for this.

My statement is true. To sell you a game with a free next gen upgrade is exactly the same than to sell you both versions at the same time.

The title should say "there is no upgrade from the PS4 to the PS5 version". As it actually reads implies one can pay a fee and upgrade but that isn't the case.

I guess I will buy it for PS5 whenever I get one. Thanks Sony, keep it up with this shitty practice and you'll hurt your brand and sales, and will lose customers as well. Hopefully they take 30 seconds of their upcoming event to rectify this crap, or release a press note or whatever and fix it.

I don't plan on getting a PS5 for at least another year so I'm more than happy to wait for a price drop on the PS4 version.

I honestly forgot, but even the Ghost upgrade was messed up - but just in a different way.

In Ghost, you can't actually even pay $10. You have to buy the DLC to get the upgrade, meaning you're locked into the $30. Your only options are $20 DLC or $30 DLC + Upgrade. There is no $10 option.

In Horizon, you're locked into the $20. But now you also can't even do that after the fact, but it has to be purchased up front.

I was under the impression cross-gen Sony 1st party titles would all be $60. It was same price for Spider-Man MM, it was the same for Sackboy.

I guess I didn't notice MLB the Show 21 is $70 on PS5 and $60 on PS4 and you don't get both versions with the $70 purchase. There's no upgrade available for that one either! I don't remember if anyone here or anywhere made a fuss about that! I guess not many people around here care that much for MLB even though it showed up on a list as a top seller in the last 12 months or so. We had been warned months ago and didn't take the hint! It sucks.

I think they should have made the PS5 version include the PS4 one.

Make it PS5 only so that you can't get it on PS4 anyway. Wouldn't that mean the people who planned to play on PS4 while waiting for a PS5 won't actually be able to play it anyway? Just buy the PS5 version and pretend the PS4 version doesn't exist then. Unless we want to get into a debate about what the game could have been without a PS4 version.

I think its cause the game was already being made for PS4 and likely not enough PS5 only stuff exist in the game to really drop a version with a 100 million install base. I think it makes more sense then randomly dropping last gen even though it was made for last gen in the first place. That has nothing to do with "greed" as one could argue them making it ONLY on PS5 is to move PS5 units even though the title was made for PS4, anyone can just scream "greed" that the game was put only on PS5 to move PS5 consoles or something lol So a company making money is moot, their job is to make money, I don't see a "greed" thing with this. You are to make as much money as you can in business, when you can, in this situation.....they have a way to make money on PS4 and PS5 that helps both install bases and helps the company too, I don't see any "greed" in such a situation man.

Cant help but laugh at the people screaming “ENTITLED!!” At anyone whose calling sony out on their bullshit. When your direct competitor is doing it for free, its a bad look. No two ways about it. No need to bend over backwards to kiss the boots of your favorite console maker.

Calling it “entitlement“ is the biggest pile of fucking shit Sony has sputtered out. It’s not ENTITLEMENT, it’s accommodating fans that can’t find a PS5 right now and might want to play this game later with the enhancements without being reamed extra money, it’s helping yourself as a First Party out by allowing fans to see the game in the best possible way when they can access it.

When the competition is doing something for free, and you’re charging for it, there’s no justification for it.

Eh, I don't have these problems. I got that PS5, and if you're wanting to play it, be patient until you can get a PS5. Also, Sony could add if for free and that would be okay too.

If you buy the game on PS4 cant you play it on backward compatibility on PS5? Simple 10$ upgrade for full upgrade (whatever it is because GOT had nothing significant) would have been so easy way to avoid this mess. If they offer free upgrade then differential pricing makes no sense as people will just buy PS4 version and then play on PS5. And upgrade option would mean they went back on their word. Jim really shot himself in the foot by mentioning free upgrade option.

If the upgrade is significant then 10$ would be worth it. I think they should bite the bullet this time and give 10$ upgrade plan.

I get what your saying but all of the bad press for this game has been caused by it being on PS4.

The only reason it’s getting backlash is because people don’t want to have to pay full price two times for this game. If it was PS5 only game the backlash would not exist.

Also they positioned it to be PS5 exclusive from day one and then announced months later it was cross gen so we don’t know for sure if it was always planned for PS4. Same thing with GOW2, I also recall RE8 getting delayed because they decided in the later stages of development to get it on PS4.

I think this was a greedy move because this game will generate millions of sales over its lifetime especially when you factor it being $70 on PS5 with paid DLC coming eventually, it didn’t need to be on PS4 but Sony wanted to make more money from the PS4 install base = greed.

Also not offering a clear upgrade path with the PS5 being difficult to get was also a greedy move. Of course their goal is to make money but you have to be reasonable at some point especially when millions will be made regardless. The things they are doing with this game is very unnecessary for Sony and makes them come off as GREEDY lol

And yet Playstation and Nintendo are making the most profits (within the gaming space). There's a reason for that and gamers overall haven't been pissed about it.
Are you joking? I haven’t read as much vitriol for a company as I have Nintendo. Great software, but hardware and services literally universally panned. Shit drifting overpriced controllers, underpowered hardware, charging for a joke of an online service, no messaging, no handles, no friend requests, no achievements/trophies, no virtual console, no social apps like Netflix, no themes, no folders.

The list of negatives literally goes on for days and days. The only positives I can think of are the exclusive software, reasonable prices compared to Sony and that it’s a handheld.

Then don't..... I think it just makes more sense to just get it for PS5 or wait to get a PS5 etc.

I get what your saying but all of the bad press for this game has been caused by it being on PS4.

What bad press happened for BoTW? We got that for free for buying a Wii U version or? If the game is good, people will focus on the game being good, this is irrelevant and I argue MOST consumers simply don't care. If they own a PS5, they are likely more interested in playing the best version, not begging for several free copies of the worst version or something. I've never seen this issues as real problems, people will buy the latest version and move on.

I think this was a greedy move because this game will generate millions of sales over its lifetime

lol thats not what that term means but ok. They suppose to not move units? No sales are suppose to happen or something ? Greedy is the act of doing something to only selfishly benefit yourself, having a PS4 version helps a PS4 owner, having a PS5 version clearly helps those who are hype for this game, no one is getting something for nothing here to argue "Greed" it literally isn't even the definition.

with paid DLC coming eventually,

And? No one is forced to buy it, a team worked to make it etc. I'm sorry man but what you think is "greed" might as well argue the whole fucking industry of gaming is scamming people or something, don't game.

All games based on your logic is about greed lol

Sony wanted to make more money from the PS4 install base = greed.

Nah bud lol, just stop. PS4 users get a game, developer worked to make the game exist and go paid, Sony funds the team and gets more profit, everyone wins and is getting something from this, no different then if it was just on PS5 or PS6, no one in that situation is getting something for NOTHING.

This is stupid. If you buy the PS4 version because you can't get a PS5, why shouldn't you be able to upgrade that if you do? I mean after paying the $10 PS5 tax. This is just Sony being lazy fucks and not wanting to do the work to make the PS5 version work as a DLC on a PS4 game.

This game shouldn't even be a PS4 game. It will come nearly 18 months after the PS5 launch. Dam straight I am gonna bitch about this.

I am fortunate to have a PS5 so I could care less about the PS4 game. This situation sucks for people who are stuck on PS4 though because I don’t see the shortage ending by Feb 2022 and I don’t see them walking this back now that preorders are live.

But either way, I am curious to see what they do and how this will play out with the other big cross gen games like God of War 2 and GT7.
