"Bad" ports of games that you prefer over other recommended releases of said games?

Resident Evil 4 on PS2, it ran solid and the extra content made up the worse graphics and low quality FMVs on the console. Plus I think it has native widescreen rather than the cut bars they did on the Gamecube.

Saints Row 2 as much it is shit on PC, can run at acceptable ish levels on today hardwares, and it's always worth revisiting on any platform.

Hitman Blood Money on PS2, while it's a crossgen game and there's only a few enhancements on PC and Xbox 360, it ran solid and perhaps the most impressive PS2 title ever alongside RE4.

Virtua Cop 1 and 2 on Saturn and PC IMO are surprisingly trade offs just like Resident Evil 4 on PS2. The soundtrack on CD was much better than the Model 2 boards, and the polycount cut was small compared to other games. VC1 was very near perfect conversion, and VC2 had some artistic changes that ended up being better than the arcade version, such as in vehicles and enemies. The Dreamcast port of VC2 is awful in the art direction and I don't recomend it.

Daytona USA on Saturn, I know, 20 FPS and shorter draw distance, but Daytona CCE changes are mostly for the worse, the cars are not captivating and the gameplay is slower and have a tight steering.

Sorry, but I put quarters into the original. I bought the NES game. It was shit. I still have it and want to shit on it everyday. It didn't try to be a port.....it was it's own shitshow. It was a typical side scrolling piece of shit. The REAL Strider was replicated on the Genesis shortly therafter. If you love a crappy side-scrolling shit-show of a game that bears ZERO resemblance to the original game then love the shit game that is Strider on NES.

A lot of old GTA ports were pretty bad.
GTA SA for example seemed to have been based on a beta version and had a lot of missing or broken details, but the PC version stil went on to became far more timeless thanks to the ecosystem and mods.

While I'm not sure about it being based on a beta version R* really fucked up the PC & OG Xbox versions when they ported over the game from ps2 they broke the alpha effects I believe it was. That removes that gorgeous orange hue that is a big part of the atmosphere imo. There is a mod that restores it on PC called Skygfx.

...Can we maybe start another GAF thread of " 'Great' Classics That You'd Prefer Not to Play"?

Strider always looked like the game of my dreams, with all the cool mobility moves plus a supercool big-ass sword that gets even bigger with powerups and creates just like a wall of damage in front of you... and yet, I don't like to play Strider very much. Gameplay is too stiff/boxy for my tastes, and the stage design/enemy encounters are of course balanced (or unbalanced) around quarter-muncher gameplay. That look of the original is iconic, but I'd rather play the sequel and the 3D game.

Ok maybe I'm still pissed that I bought the game thinking it was SOMEWHAT like the arcade version.....I was sooooo wrong. I'm still pissed. Moreso than any other NES game I bought.

Strider NES is not at all Strider, so I commiserate if you saw it in arcades and wanted that at home. On the other hand, that was the way on NES, so it's weird to me that people still have hangups that it wasn't an exact port when so many other games were totally not exact ports and still were respected. It was more a side-game, or its own thing, and back in the NES era, sometimes doing something completely different was better than trying to badly port down the original. Strider NES wasn't as successful at it, but sometimes all-time bangers came out in the end like Ninja Gaiden, Rygar, Double Dragon (and DD2/3,) Bionic Commando, Willow, Bomberman, Punch-Out, Contra... Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight.

(*OK, at least everybody can agree, nobody liked Street Fighter 2010, right?)

In fact I th ink thats what made the NES so great and stand out from the other consoles at the time. NES was pushing many DEEP Story Driven Adventure and not just arcade ports and arcade like games.

(Whoops, I didn't finish my own thoughts in my post, fixed that.)

Yep, so was pretty much every other game on that list. (I think people don't like Mighty Bomberman, but aside from some esoteric play rules for unlocks, I think Bomberman's gameplay is pretty great either in Arcade levels or NES stages.)

Ninja Gaiden, if it wasn't for that NES game, we probably wouldn't have the 3D Ninja Gaiden games today. That old arcade game is only remembered for that buzzsaw Game Over screen, the mokeybar kicks, and an okay Lynx port for a platform that could take any okay game it could get. (I do not prefer the Lynx NG over other recommended releases of said games, but I did put a lot of time into it back in the day when it was that or Pit Fighter if you wanted to throw a punch and all you had on hand was Atari's portable.)

It's funny about Contra, as a kid, I always thought that NES Contra was totally different from Arcade Contra because everything looks so different, but of course, the Arcade game is almost the same levels and gameplay (with some remixing/cuts on NES), and if you play the Arcade game enough, you can actually get used to the low-flip jumping and it feels like the same game more or less.

In fact I th ink thats what made the NES so great and stand out from the other consoles at the time. NES was pushing many DEEP Story Driven Adventure and not just arcade ports and arcade like games.

It's kind of a shame they didn't have a naming convention for NES games back then, the way they had "Super ##" or "## 64", because yeah, the confusion/resentment over what was the "real game" overshadowed the accomplishments of so many of those NES games. (Genesis had a couple of those too, like the aforementioned Moonwalker.) The developers identified what was the essence of fun in the originals, then they started fresh from there, and IMO, the end result was often more enjoyable, memorable, and replayable than the Arcade games that inspired it.

Does pretty much every multi plat xbox one game count from 2013 to xbox one x release games ran at like 900p usually with some settings turned down and worse frame rate than PS4 and since xbox has been my main platform since 360 it was shite.

Gta 4 is the best on 360. Proper music, shadows, depth of field, anti aliasing and color grading.
All of which such on pc

I’d definitely go with Bionic Commando on the NES over the arcade version.
I might go with Bionic Commando on the Game Boy over the NES version. (Not Elite Forces, the original GB version.) It's a more squatty screen, it's not in color, and the stages are changed up (it's more of a sequel/sidegame than a port, so I guess it doesn't fit here?,) but I love the grappling challenges of big floating ship in the portable game, and some of the bosses are cool.
