It's become a bit of a meme now that at every Sony conference or event this year they padded the big announcements out by showing the same Deathloop gameplay footage.

You think you're getting 40 minutes of God of War, Infamous reboot etc and instead you are 20 minutes into the show, they are finally wrapping up the indie games and then, yup, that fucking 8 minutes of Deathloop again. Initially it made sense, their big game for the year and it's due out soon; but I think they've really overdone it to the extent it's probably going to backfire on them. I noticed in the stream comments yesterday the chat completely erupted with anger and frustration when they showed Deathloop.

I wasn't even going to make a thread, but woke up this morning to 3 different Playstation Network emails telling me to 1.) pre-order, 2.) watch the new gameplay video and 3.) don't know cos I fucking deleted it the moment I saw deathloop in the title. I hate this game already, and it's not even the games fault.

So I'm genuinely curious if I'm overthinking this, or if they have actually managed to build up lingering resentment for their biggest release of the year with their PR strategy.

I would still pick this over that weird ninja mii kami´s "harry potter game flailing like a twat with your hands cuz fuck wands".

A launch title gets delayed 3? times. Deathloop was never a DAY1@€80 or $95 purchase.

Yes, I am actively boycotting the game. They have been pushing it so hard, 10% off for PS plus pre-orders, the same boring trailer at every state of play.

I am sure it will be fun and I'm glad for those that love Arkane, but this is an easy pass for me, I will play it when it inevitably comes to ps plus in a year.

Sadly this game just feels like it's going nowhere. I have no idea why but every time I see it I'm just not interested, it's like the game was designed to look uninteresting, it's not from mechanics or world design, as that appears unique. Yet it all blends together into sort of beige... like I'd buy it if literally nothing else was available to play... thinking about it I would probably hmm and harr if it was in a bargain bin for £10 on to buy it not.

Its weird I don't think iv ever felt so disinterested about a game before.

I was never going to try it but after the show I believe I'm not going to even look at it at all, not even the reviews or the a price cut or if it's going to be a free game on plus. Man they just pushed it so hard that makes it sad to see them advertising a game most of players don't even know what is it?!

Feels weird to be within 4.5% in this poll lol.
Physical has been sent to me this morning so will get it tomorrow or Monday.
Two reasons for me to get this day 1
1. Arkane studios
2. I love rogue games

But still I can see why some people might be confused. They are very hardly pushing rogue game in to AAA space.

Definitely Disagree on the front with “too much” of marketing though.

Dishonored and Prey had very little to no marketing. One of the most watched trailers for Dishonored 2 was fan made live action one published officially by Bethesda lol.
So I’m not surprised they are doing whatever they can to give this game an exposure.

Even if the game is an AAA in terms of reviews or whatever . I still won’t buy it when I know I am getting free on game pass next year. It’s not a game I am really concerned about and have to play it the day it came out . Rarely very few games do that for me . So yeah no . Not gonna buy it. The game doesn’t look fun either to be honest or even graphically impressive.

Sony is really lacking in terms of games and the fact they showed the same titles as last year does tell . They need more studios and they need to secure really good amount of 3rd party games exclusive to them . And when I say exclusive I mean full exclusive just like street fighter 5. Not a game that will come to Xbox after 6 months or 1 year

I honestly do not understand how companies can be so stupid with this so called time exclusive . This shit doesn’t work. People are willing to wait to buy the game on a console they already own . Specially when games cost like 100$ now after tax here in Canada .

Marketing was good and handled well.
People in general are just not in love with Arkane's games. Just look at sales of previous amazing games like Dishonored2. Sucks for them but they're niche.
Personally I don't care and if Deathloop gets good review scores I'm definetly getting it since I loved the Dishonored series and this seems to be a nice twist on the formula.
No comment on those who are skipping the game just because the developer now belongs to MS, that's incredibly stupid.

What many people don't realise is that each of these promotional activities gets assigned a monetary value and this is how third party exclusives are paid for. People think moneyhats are cash but it doesn't work like that.

Featuring the game in the stream last night with 500k live viewers (and no doubt millions later) would be valued extremely highly by any publisher even though in this case people are fed up with seeing it.

People don't like this line of thinking because you realise it's your attention that is being monetised. It's like the adage about Facebook, if a service is free you're not the customer you're the product. 🙂

I'm intrigued by it but I'm not touching it until I know all the details.
They haven't answered or are avoiding how much of a rogue-like it is. Does anyone know if you can save your game midway at all?

I think the early announcement and subsequent delays (probably related to COVID) hurt it more than the marketing
This is the sort of game that should have been announced and released within 12 month.

Live from NeoGAF, it's Friday Night!
Have we ever seen some unedited extended gameplay?

Looks cool to me and i consider buying it but i will wait for reviews. I really don't mind the marketing for the game.

It was announced in June 2020 and even with the delays it's coming just a little bit over one year since the reveal.
Marketing has not even been as intense as some people are claiming. The game got 4 small trailers and a 9 minutes deep dive.
The issue is just that Arkane's games don't click with a wide audience.
Some people are just not interested in the concept and so they're vocal about not wanting to see more of something they don't like....as if the developer/publisher shouldn't have the right to market it.

Count me among the few that were eventually convinced by the marketing. I thought it was one of the strongest things they showed yesterday.

Of course, I don't have a PS5, only an XSX, so I'll be stuck waiting for it to go multi-plat, but I won't be surprised if it reviews really well.

The game looks bad in my opinion, like a AA trying to be AAA. This will likely flop and waste Sony's money.

I love most of Arkane's games but I don't enjoy games where you replay the same scenario over and over. Mooncrash, Hitman, anything like that. I just haven't got the time or patience for them.

So I was never gonna buy it.

I think Deathloop's premise is just not particularly interesting. An immersive sim in a time loop sounds cool... until you think through the logistics of how that might play. And the reality is that it seems like an extremely repetitive game of attrition. Sony have utterly failed to sell their timed exclusive on anything other than the time loop gimmick... and that's probably the worst part of the concept. Hopefully I'm wrong, and it turns out well. But for all its attempt at personality with its art style, music, and presentation... it feels extremely forgettable.

Nothing I’ve seen looks particularly interesting but it’s Arkane so I’ll check it out. It’s par for the course for Arkane games to underperform despite being good, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the same happens here.

The game never interested me since I didn't like it's style in the first place plus I don't like first person games. The constant marketing of the game in these shows has been annoying and further turn off for the game. I can't wait until this game releases so we don't see any more trailers for this game.

I feel my eyeballs have been harassed with so much forced Deathloop footage. All that brown/orange 60's imagery is just eye fatigue at this point and I haven't even played it. I feel bad for their Marketing team but too much exposure is actually a bad thing.

Since the game has exclusive marketing with PS, there were probably deals already set in place to promote the game. So if it means long videos, that might had been already set in stone.

Sony doesn't have any first party shooters, so they rely on third party shooters to fill the void. And Deathloop was meant to do this as there's no Xbox version any time soon.

What irks the situation is MS owns the IP now, so it's like Sony is helping MS. If MS never bought Zenimax, I bet a lot more people would be more receptive of Deathloop marketing.

This is not a big numbers game, never was, never will.

This is a game for arkane fanboys like me and some casual who think that this is a normal fps just to return the game at gamestop the day after.

Who loves arkane buy everyone of their games without need for any marketing, they are that good.
(Unless you absolutely hate roguelite mechanics)

The marketing added to its issues...

Since MSFT bought them, I was never going to buy for launch price cause I know it will go to gamepass in a year or so.

Plus their games were never really that popular.

Then you get this over exposure and constant push, especially when it gets in the way of bigger 1st party games....it's just going to annoy people.
