Am I too forgiving / out of touch with not hating games everyone else seems to?

There are games I like that everyone else does too like Ghosts of Tsushima, Zelda BoTW, Spider-Man 1 and Miles Morales, ..etc.

Then there are games like various Call of Duty games including Vanguard (beta), various Assassin's Creed, and other titles which everyone pretty much dislikes or even consider a dumpster fire.

For some reason, from the great games to the games commonly considered trash, for many of them, I can find things to enjoy in them and genuinely have a good time with them. With CoD shooters, Battlefield shooters, and the like, sure, there is a bunch of frustration when playing them, but overall, I tend to find a way to enjoy time with them. Perhaps I'm just not dug in the way that community members are who can easily see the problems with maps, guns, and gameplay. With Assassin's Creed, as long as the story is entertaining on any level, I can usually enjoy the time... though, it is exhausting to try to get everything on a map.

I'm starting to feel I'm out of touch with why everyone hates everything. Though not related, I kinda do the same thing with games, .. and ... people too. Maybe I'm just too Pollyanna (If you don't get the reference, that's OK, I'm getting up there in age).

Does everyone just hate most gaming things now? I don't know what to think tbh. In a way, I'm kinda fatigued of all the hate. It makes me disconnect from online gaming related sites and media, and in some cases, social media.

"everyone" does not think AC, COD etc. are dumpsters fires, they're some of the most popular games in the world, it's just that you're on an "enthusiast" forum where mainstream games aren't going to get as much love as they do from people who play a handful of games every year.

I imagine if you went to a cinephile forum and tried to discuss the merits of Fast & Furious 9 you'd probably get a similar reaction

Who cares? Really the only time you need to convince someone else to like a game you like is when you’re trying to get them to play an online game with you. Otherwise, just play what you like. A bunch of people hate Dark Souls 2, but it’s my favorite Souls game next to DaS1, and I’m having a good time replaying it now for like the 20th time (doing a Souls marathon in anticipation of Elden Ring).

Assassin's Creed - People here insist on doing every single quest and collectible and then they complain about getting burnt out...
CoD, BF - People here hate multiplayer games for some reason so what can you do.

Also bear in mind a lot of people here don't even understand GaaS games. They'll shit all over them and choose the worst examples the industry has to offer as reasons for why they suck, as if there's no such thing as a bad single player / non-GaaS game.

I completely understand the burn out part of games like Assassin's Creed. I get burned out on them after fighting through the same enemies and mission types for the millionth time.

With CoD and BF , I see Youtube videos discussing how with something like Vanguard, they hate all three maps they've shown. They feel that the maps don't fit the play type or player count, or how the game is a re-skin or CoD 2019, or feel it's boring..etc. When I play a game like this, I just jump in, try to do my best and am happy to play well on any level. I just don't find that I judge the maps on the level others do.

What I'm pointing out is.. I'm just not sure if I'm out of touch with the reasons to hate things people find all over the place like I just don't "get it", or, whether I'm just happy to game and don't care too much about the environments it's in. I'm just trying to understand how it is I can like things that get soooooo much hate. It's not that I'm not happy or trying to find a reason to hate on things.

No that's called a positive outlook on a hobby you don't have to pretend you really enjoy. A wild concept on the internet, no wonder got you questioning your sanity

You're just able to take enjoyment from whats good and discount the bad parts, its a good quality to have. I find there are certain elements being what I consider "bad" that put me off in games straight away but most of the time I try to just enjoy the best bits.

I did get burnt out on AC with Origins but tbh thats more to do with my disagreeing on how they changed combat, their reversal on using motion and face capture for so much of the game, having to abandon the complex animation blending because they wanted it to be more responsive and making climbing more of a straight line afair (I get that most casuals don't want the climbing to be a puzzle so fair enough).

So I dislike how cutscenes look, how the character moves and climbs, the combat. Which just sours the rest of the experience because those things are so big a part of the experience.

Nope. I enjoy a lot of those games too. And they're really not bad at all. A lot of people (through their own admission) don't even try the games they trash.

I think it's just normal to hate on popular things.

Thanks.

That is a sad "normal".

When playing Vanguard's beta this morning trying to get to lvl 20 before the start of the work day, someone post-match literally said "Yeah, I trash talked and said (insert racial / nationality insult here), it's the Internet. Get used to it". I remember back when I was playing CoD2 on XBOX 360 online with complete randoms. 90+% of the interactions were friendly and fun. It's been a really really long time since those days.

I won't hold out hope that people will stop hating on popular things, but, I will continue to enjoy games. It's nice to read the positive comments in this thread. I appreciate it, truly. Thanks.

Just like what you like.
I like a lot of games that get shit on, and i'm happy to say it too. I think AC Odyssey was probably my fave game last gen, and said the same on here mnay times to an influx of smilies. Thankfully, and i'm not sure why, that game seems to of got sa lot of love the past year or so so maybe people are releasing their hate shackles lol.

most folk are pretty forgiving of games. It is only on a gaming forum that you will get the more extreme or niche views of games. This is why cod and assassin creed sell a ridiculous amount every time they release.

I simply just don't like most shooters and find assassin creed to look boring most of the time.

It means you can think for yourself.

I like a lot of different things, a good COD campaign, both old and new AC, JRPGS, I think Square-Enix still mostly kicks ass, Red dead online is my favorite multiplayer game ever.

AND GAMING IS THE BEST ITS EVER BEEN!

I don't think you're out of touch, but the real question is, why care if you are? Enjoy the games you like. I don't really care about every opinion on this forum or others. I come here mostly for news and to find hidden gems. There is an ebb and flow to them. Every few years they will like or dislike something.

No you're not. A lot of what you mentioned are some of the most popular games in the world.
And there's nothing wrong with that, I'm the same. Like what you want and that's all that matters, what others think of that is secondary. Many aspects of what's not tolerated here for certain games by individuals I never get bothered by or frankly it's a non-issue as an example.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter if you're out of touch or not.

Nah, there's great satisfaction and freedom in playing the games you actively want to play.

99% of big releases may as well not exist for me. Not that I think they're bad games, just not interested in playing the majority of the games that are released.

As usual its very hard to have or express a balanced opinion on the internet. People dont like to read through a wall of text or watch 30 minute reviews. Your thoughts have to be short and precise and therefore extreme in nature.

Just make a little experiment on this forum. Do some drive-by shit or fanboy posting (not more than a sentence) and see how many reactions you get. Then try to write like 20 sentences on the pro and cons on a game or on some news. Hardly anyone will read and therefor react to it.

This internet culture is ruining discussion culture for years now and is dividing people more and more. You're either for something or against something. There is hardly enough room for anything else. News reporting and politics only worsen that sorry state by treating every issue as a binary state.

It has nothing to do with this forum in particular or gaming more general. Its just the way work now on the internet.

But I am happy you like gaming. I do too. The past few years have been great.

All those games you listed are very popular and generally well reviewed. No you are not special or unique for enjoying fucking Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty.

I try to keep it simple. I like what I like and play what I want. I don't hate games for petty reasons, no politics, no exclusive, no woke.

If it's good and available I'll play it. My preference tends to be PS exclusives though.

This has been me my whole life I feel like. Some of my favorite games have been hated or are obscure. I melted a video card playing Tron 2.0 on the PC. I really enjoyed Cyberpunk. Still play it just to run around and shoot people. I have loved every version of Halo that has come out. Desperately want another Viva Pinata. But I hated the Last of Us. Cut scenes were great but the gameplay felt incredibly generic. And I love stealth games. Was addicted to the Thief games. I bought a PS4 with Killzone Shadowfall because everyone seemed to rave about it here, but I thought that it was one of the dumbest shooters I had ever played. Enemies would just walk into my stream of bullets. I even think there are a ton of amazing mobile games. Ones that are just as good as full fledged console or PC games.

Actually my problem might just be that my tastes don't match Gaf's tastes. Which really doesn't bother me at all.

Just like and play what you like. Live your best life.

We all like what we like (and dislike what we don't). No you are not some "dork" for liking CoD or Assassins Creed- these games top best selling game charts and sell millions and millions- that wouldn't happen if people didn't like these games. But yes- you go on a lot of enthusiast boards, and you often see a different story. Don't sweat it.

Yes, you are out of touch. You know that on places like forums you have to like the same things as everybody else or you must be a communist or something!!! Of course I'm joking there. Enjoy what you enjoy, nobody needs to give you permission to enjoy what you enjoy and to honest, I wouldn't really listen to what the majority of people say on places like this.
I enjoy the games that you mentioned in the first list. In relation to the second list, I really used to enjoy Assassin's Creed but I've not really bothered with them for some time but that isn't me suggesting that they're bad games, it's me suggesting that it's not often the sort of thing that I like to play these days.
I have really enjoyed games that I feel are bad games and not enjoyed games that I would call good games. I mentioned recently somewhere that I don't enjoy the Zelda games and that really does go for all of them but I also said that I'm disappointed that I don't like them and really wish that I did.
I think places like this tend to encourage negativity and it seems to be one of those things that certainly happens at the start and end of console generations but with every single console generation of been happy with the amount and quality of games that I've had available to play even though the loudest voices on places like this seem to declare that every generation is far worse than the last generation. I've just never found it to be that way, none of them have been without their mistakes but I feel that we have a ridiculous amount of worthwhile games each and every generation and I've never even come close to complementing all the good games but also, gaming isn't the most important thing in my life and I do many other things that just aren't related to it in any way.

That's an excellent question. The reason for me specifically to care about it is in an attempt to try to understand why so many hate on a game, to see if I'm just being oblivious. When I see youtubers and all sorts of people on social media and all over the place hating, I began to wonder if I am just blind.

I'm happy to read the positive comments in here. It reaffirms that there are still many that enjoy the games so many are hating on. I'm even more happy that people like what they like on here. It reminds me that the more vocal out there are those that hate while those that enjoy are quietly just enjoying themselves playing. I almost forgot that most news and things out there are put out when there's negatives to say because as the nightly news will show you, negative sells news.

This wasn't about me being special or unique. Not sure why you would think that was the point of this thread. It's not some odd left field stealth brag.

All corners of the internet have an unhealthy supply of often unreasonable amounts of cynicism.

You do you. Its your time your money in the end. You wont get banned for liking CP77 for example. Be glad that a place like NeoGaf exists in this day and age.

Those games sell millions of copies every time they release a new one. Do you seriously believe you're the only one that likes them?
