Kena Bridge of Spirits Review Thread

Moderated wildly
Seeing reports that it plays like a classic ps2 character companion platform game with a ps5 skin on top. Sounds awesome. Proper vibe out and chill. Might jump in after I wrap up psychonauts 2.

Already have my cheap $8 EGS pre order thanks to to regional pricing but might full price double dip on PS5 to experience it on the Ambilight OLED with surround sound after these reviews.

Looks like it's turned out far better than I expected.

^^looks really nice. Love the lighting. Textures are a bit muddy though (ground and the rocks on the right). Is this PC or PS5?

Not only Eurogamer. The below from PC gamer.

"The fundamental issue with Kena, which rears its head almost everywhere you look, is that you'll have done almost everything on offer here a hundred times before. Combat is very familiar, complete with enemies carrying glowing weak spots. There are giant flowers which act as grapple points. There are targets to shoot within a time limit. The ledges you can grab on to are, as is tradition, marked with what I can only assume is bird poo. Strategic use of game design conventions isn't inherently bad, but in no area does Kena reach beyond convention."

Being critical isn't bad lol. Nothing wrong with pointing out if something isn't done quite so well.
Sure, but Kena is designed to provide Quality pixar moments, if you look at other awesome indie games you will see them lacking in many aspects but each one of them excel in something specific and that's why they are rated high. These reviews wanna be ''Critical''? sure, what was said may be true in these reviews, but the reviewer needs to be realistic with the expectations before criticising. This is their first game, their vision is specific and clear to everyone, so i don't care if the game lacks things, what matter is that they achieved their vision and we got a new charming IP. The foundation is strong for a sequel with better gameplay. With better budget and more developers they can expand on the gameplay.

Can you elaborate what "quality pixar moments" mean in terms of a video game? If you mean the overall visual presentation, I 100% agree. Certainly hit the brief there. But the reviews we are discussing are about the gameplay, not the graphics. Almost every outlet universally agrees the games "looks" fantastic.

Different people like different things not sure what every reviewer needs to agree as long as they explain why. If the things that bother them don’t bother you then that review isn’t somehow not useful.

The whole “it’s their first game” thing is silly to me. I don’t go to a restaurant and enjoy a meal more of it was only Ok but the chefs first job.

Looking forward to playing it, those are great scores!. I've watched a little bit of gameplay and the only minor thing I have is how her double jump looks to be very vertical like it doesn't propel her forward enough. Don't know if it feels that way when playing tho

Think I'll pull the trigger on it tonight. Sounds harmless enough, a looker but nothing special, like that new Ratchet game.

Nice to see this doing well. Looks like a jolly time to be had by all, is their a platinum trophy for this if it’s not a full price release?

The charm you see in a pixar movie turned into a game. That vision easily influence the quality of the [story, gameplay animation, particles, excitement, lore..etc]. For me it is amazing. Kena is not even my taste but i can't ignore the talent.

Well, i don't mind if that is their taste but i'm not gonna [endorse/admire] opinions that only care about their own experience.

A fair reviewer before stating their own opinion/taste, will also include the vision of the studio and see if the studio achieved it or not and if the studio had to compromise to achieve it, also mention the budget, the development cycle, the number of developers. Then the reviewer can mention his/her opinion if that vision is impressive or not. Then criticising.

All i'm saying be fair before criticising. Reviewing games is still too subjective. Reviewing [based on the VISION and based on the development context] is very healthy for all games.

Lots of surprisingly good scores from smaller budget games this year its great to see.

I wont buy many of them at launch but will keep in mind for bargain bin or gamepass later.

Man, the cringy Pixar comparisons never get old. R&C photo mode is at least somewhat close to Pixar, but this? Come on :messenger_beaming:

Don't be salty Bernd, there are two platforms you can play this game on. If you have neither then that's on you.

Some reviewers have commented on it looking like an animated movie:

It only takes a short look at the game to see why.

They should have reallocated like 1% of dealthloops marketing budget to this so folks knew this game was even coming out. Very surprised by the scores, I figured the radio silence from Sony was a bad sign.

Going to pick this up, sounds almost like an old school Rareware platformer.

How would you compare the graphics of Kena Vs R&C? What's better and what's worse?
Both have stellar production values and are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I'd say Rift Apart looks a bit crisper as it should and it usually has a lot more going on overall as far as objects on the screen

So glad I got this, I'm really enjoying my time with it so far on my PS5.
The music and overall atmosphere is just lovely, gameplay isn't up there with the likes of Returnal or Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, but considering this studio is nowhere near the scale or experience of those devs that was never what I would have expected.

I love the art style and the setting, it's gorgeous and the opening sections nicely bring you into the world.
Good from what I've played so far, I can't wait to play more, but I have to sleep.

Is 'That Pure Potato'
So far:

- I get the Pixar comparisons. The character models definitely. But like R&C it's not quite there
- Getting Horizon vibes from the combat. Very similar, and I think that's a good thing
- Serviceable use of 3D audio and DualSense
- Performance mode is definitely the way to go. Fidelity mode is only marginally better looking, and the 30 fps looks choppy as hell here. Not concealed well as it was in R&C

Awesome, personally I'm not one to give much of a shit about reviews I just buy every game that interests me. But nice to know the game isn't trash.

Looking forward to starting it today.

Looks like my style of Platinum as well - for those who don’t know in the UK you can currently get £30 PSN credit for £25 on Eneba. Would make this game £27ish.

All I needed to read from IGN;

With its elegantly simple combat and beautiful world, Kena: Bridge of Spirits harkens back to the days of the N64/GameCube-era Zeldas, Okami, and Star Fox Adventures, while also adding modern sensibilities and a distinct personal touch.
