Nintendo is firing on all cylinders right now and it's great to see after the Wii U era

It has always been relevent. I can't believe this even has to be explained. The dreamcast wasn't competing with the PS2. The gamecube wasn't competiting with the PS2. The only console competing with the PS2 was the Xbox, and that was just barely.

The biggest driver to the PS2s dominance was because of third party support. Like the Switch, if you wanted to play those games, your option was the PS2. That is what you call a monopoly.

I'll give you this. The switch is competiting with them on a level of "I'm poor with only a couple of 100 to spend" and that's it. Beyond that. The Switch has absolutely no competition.
I think maybe we're using different definitions of the term competition here. I'm talking about products competing against each other in the same market, in this case the video game device market. The strengths/weaknesses and success of the products doesn't matter.

The N64 and PS1 were competing against each other. The 3DS and Vita were competing against each other. The Dreamcast, GameCube, PS2 and Xbox were all competing against each other. That's why we can say that PS2 had dominance, because it had 3 competitors it was dominating.

The Wii U sold way way way less then the PS4 and had way way way worse third party support. Those two products were still competitors.

I don't understand your point about people being poor. Do products bought by poor people not count or something?

Yes this is just an argument of definition at this point

You have a PS and Xbox console with the same linup of games, (you can still have exclusives on both to differentiate the two) then those ones are competing, because now they need to try and convince the consumer to go with their platform over the other one.

Then you have Nintendo. They don't have the same lineup. They have their exclusives and that's basically it. Their job isn't to convince you to pick their console over PS or Xbox, their job is to simply create a lineup of games you want. What the other two do won't change that. If they fail it'll be on their own merits and that's it. The Wii U failed on their own merits. Nothing sony did with the PS4 impacted that

My point about poor people is just that's the only demographic where they would compete when deciding between a console. For most people, it's not really going to be a matter of do I buy a PC, PS or Xbox, because they all have their own quirks where it makes sense to own all three, but it'll be a matter of who do I buy my games from. This still applies to the Switch with the little indie games and whatnot, but for the big third party games the switch is out of the equation.

And yet 2017 was PS4 and Xbox's 4th year on the market.

In the Switch's 4th year on the market it shattered the record for the most consoles ever sold with 28.8 million units sold.
that supports my point. because Switch is cheaper lower tire.

for big 3rd party games Switch hardly figures.

Switch is nice but it's in a different category. it's not part of the AAA club. best to just enjoy it for what it is. forcing it into the conversation will just undermine it and highlight it's limitations.

They are still competing for the same money though. Nintendo wants you to buy their platform and buy games on their platform over the other 2, just like Sony and Microsoft do. Nintendo wants you to play Minecraft on their platform, Just Dance on their platform, Fortnite on their platform. They want franchises like Tales, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter etc. to be on their platform and they want third party exclusives. They're not good at getting the AAA titles, but they still want them.

Ultimately each of the three platform holders are competing with each other to get as many games on their platform as they can. Rich people will still choose Switch over PS5 if Switch is the platform with more of the games they want.

Right, i'm sure they want them, but they do a piss poor job at it and its clear its just not their focus

Again, just look at next years lineup as an example. For third party sales its once again a battle between PS, Xbox and PC and if there's a reason you're going to buy a switch next year its once again because of the exclusives and none of the other platforms are going to change your mind.

Dying Light 2 is probably going to run like trash on the switch, won't sell well, and will further cement it as the place you dont go to for third party

Depends on the third party and their strategy. Third parties were caught with their pants down by Switch's success but we've seen their support improving year by year and I don't think that's going to stop.

Most big AAA games will miss the Switch but for other types of games the third sales on Switch have been very good, which is why third parties will keep investing in the platform.

Care to elaborate? Why is Nintendo stock falling?
I have no idea why that person is talking about Sony stock levels in the context of this thread, but to answer your question Switch hardware sales were down YoY in April-June 2021 as there was nothing nearly as big as the Animal Crossing / pandemic boost it got last year.

I can understand you want to play those games, but Triangle Strategy? Brain Age? I can give you BOTW2 and Kirby (who look a lot like Mario 3D World imo), the rest isn't really my cup of tea nor big production (an expansion, a 2D platformer, Bayonetta 3 looking worse than 2....).
I'm not saying they will be bad games, but in term of appeal we had better years.
Nintendo need to put some serious power into the Switch 2 because the lack of titles like Kena, Hogwarts Legacy and many other is sad.

But that's just my opinion.

Still can't shake the feeling this is a lot of sour grapes, Nintendo have made a console that is not powerful and it's still selling like hot cakes, with no real price cut as yet, so to deal with this mind boggling fact, they suggest impending sales doom is just round the corner, and the console has no games, when in fact there are lots of games available, just not games they like personally. ;)

I'm not paying 1 cent extra for them.

same reason couch class sales are the highest. because its the cheapest and good enough for the need. and Switch is a crossover that is mainly a handheld. it's the 2nd option for everyone.
Except that it's not the cheapest option (if you exclude the Lite, which sells considerably less than the standard Switch) and hasn't been the cheapest option for most of its life. There have been $300 versions of the PS4 and Xbox One available for years and now there's the Series S. In fact, one of the favorite console warrior talking points since day one has been that the Switch is too expensive. Price definitely isn't the system's primary appeal.

but not THE 3rd party titles. the app store has even more games but few interesting ones.

Now we're talking about taste again.

I doubt Tales gets ported. It's clear that Switch is not in the plans of Bandai Namco Studios .

We've seen a lot of Bamco games ported to the Switch after their release on other platforms. This seems to be especially true of Japanese focused games. That said, a few (like Ace Combat and Soul Caliber) were never ported, so it's definitely not a sure thing at all.

Nintendo brings more depth with mario's jump than Ellie's entire moveset in the last of us. They do the same with the other core mechanics in most of their games.
TLoU2 was a TOTALLY different thing lol. It wouldn't make sense for Ellie to jump twice her height into the air and pull momentum out if her ass to dive forward. I'm sure Naughty Dog would give it a good try if they made a 3-D platformer.

Compared with other 3rd person shooters, its sublime. Not sure what Nintendo would have done differently.

Your entire argument rests on the erroneous assumption that third party cross-platform games being available on systems determines whether or not those systems are in competition. That’s ridiculous.

One could just as easily make the argument that systems compete based on their first party offerings, and third party sales aren’t as relevant. That argument would be just as wrong, but it would at least be supported better by actual console sales: Nintendo and Sony have far more successful first party offerings than Microsoft, and they sell more consoles than Microsoft.

You can see this further by looking at launch year sales of Switch and PS5, and the incredibly high attach rates of BOTW\MK8 for Switch and Miles Morales for PS5. People buy the console alongside first party software to play on it.

Switch and PS5 and Xbox are all competitors because they sell dedicated hardware for playing video games. Their relative strengths with first and third party software are a factor in how well they compete against each other, not whether they’re in competition with each other.

Yup. That's right.

I could have bought the crossplatform third party game, Outriders, on my PS5, where i usually do. But i didn't because Microsoft convinced me to just get it through gamepass instead.

That's competition

Did i think about the switch? No, because as usual it didn't launch there

You are one consumer out of hundreds of millions, all deciding between competing systems for different reasons.

We have a PS4 and a Switch, and NBA 2K is released for both every year. We buy it on Switch because the PS4 version can’t be played on the go.

Just sounds like a convient way to discredit the reality

But once again, i'll keep referencing next year.

Which games are going to sell the most, and be the most played? For the PS5, and Xbox, it'll be mostly the big AAA multiplatform games, besides the few exclusives that are also going to be on multiple platforms. On the Switch side, it's once again just going to be their exclusives.

Out of the hundreds of millions of consumers, who is going to think about the switch when they decide which platform they want to buy Elden Ring, the next COD, Avatar, Hogwarts or Gotham Knights?

No one.

Out of the hundreds of millions of consumers, who is going to think about the PS5, or Xbox Series when they decide which platform they want to buy Zelda, or Pokemon?

No one.

Which entirely proves my point that different consumers choose between competing consoles for different reasons. Your silly insistence that there is a difference between buying a system because it plays Zelda vs. because it has Gamepass vs. because it has the next Call Of Duty is a distinction of your own creation that bears no relevance to the video game marketplace. It’s just thinly veiled console warring nonsense.

This isn't console warring. If you can't stick to an argument without using that pathetic little derogation then log off your account

Nintendo won't do more than they can depending on circumstances so their "cyllinders" are being burned as situation demand and no more, many here don't like it but most Nintendo users (fans and casuals) are totally happy with their output, it doesn't make them bad or dumb people, for example, those complaining that their other console is more powerful should know that they're playing on an "inferior" hardware anyway compared to PC, so power talk is BS. To each their own.

No it doesn't.

The Switch doesn't have any competitors. If you want to play Animal Crossing, your only option is a switch

PlayStation, Xbox and PC all compete with each other however.
If you want to play God Of War your only option is PS... so PS have no competition?

So Switch is "winning" cause it's "the cheapest", but Nintendo is stealing people with "overpriced" console? Always funny to see this

ICEs are a thing of the past anyway, so the thread title makes sense.

This just makes my mind boggle about the lack of a Switch Pro or Tv only Switch. The visuals of this game are fitting for something like Kirby, but this looks like 600p and 30fps, that's just crap. This in 4k/60 would be alright.

Gameboy Advance Classic
Premium Joycons that get rid of that pesky problem that doesnt really exist ;)

Switch sales in Japan started slowing the week Oled was announced in anticipation of the new SKU. When it arrives they will likely be higher than ever.

Last fiscal quarter Switch recorded it's second highest q1 results ever and the highest q1 sales of any non Nintendo platform ever. Stock market reactions to Nintendo are pretty meaningless when given context.

This is contradicting, imo... They compete, I'll give you an annecdotical example: I've had friends not knowing if they'll buy a Switch or PS4 so they ask me my opinion... So I can see lots of people don't care about what to play, but to play something at all

It's not contradicting

If your average joe is buying a switch to play Mario Kart and Animal Crossing, and a PS4 to play COD and Battlefield, then they're buying one system for first parties and the other for third parties

Whether they've even heard of a the terms before doesn't matter. That's what they're doing.

Someone going out to buy a console without even knowing what games they want to buy sounds like what a minority would do. You at least take the time to look first. Unless you're talking about someone buying a gift or something

I don't know how to phrase this not a console war kind of way, so I'll just be honest. I was hoping they'd fail again, ever since the N64, I haven't liked their hardware decisions, and ever since the Wii, their hardware's output is terrorist level of bad. I would love to play Zelda or Mario but I am not going to pay $300 for such an underpowered machine, the value isn't there for me.

When Switch went into production they used the most advanced mobile chip on the market at the time. It was literally the best they could do given power consumption and battery life constraints.

Same would apply to MS vs Sony lol, want to play Halo with your friends? You only have Xbox cause PS is not competing with Halos lol, each one offers something unique, more now than ever due to MS having Game Pass and Sony keeping their cinematic stuff, it's not about competing in specific proposals but on the sum of all which offer a value to each platform, Nintendo don't have AAA third parties, but has other strength for which people will choose them before the competition and otherwise too.

If I'm looking for something too specific like Halo or Mario, then there will be no competition because the consumer knows what they want.

If I want to play FIFA sure Nintendo won't compete there, but if I'm looking for "X" JRPG MS have nothing to do there, see?

They all compete and offer different values in the market. And not knowing or caring about which games are in a platform or another is perfectly common lol, how many parents go find something to gift on hollidays for their children?

Yes Nintnedo proved that they don't need to make bigger budget games like Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild to succeed. Sell Wii and GameCube ports for full price people will eat that shit up. Pokémon with a large budget na forget that go low budget it will sell millions regardless. Metroid Prime 4 not yet let's just throw in a lower budget 2D game full price who cares about these indie 2D Metoridvania games at lower prices.

Switch out in a while lol we don't need a price cut its selling full price. Switch Pro nah just slap a new OLED screen on it no one gives a shit if games are chugging framerate in Hyryle Warriors is fine. Xenoblade low Res who cares.

Virtual Console backwards compatible from Wii U or 3DS forget it let's add tiers for a streaming service. Oh they want more consoles let's add another tier on top for more money.

Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf have less content than previous entries who cares.

It's all about charging premium price for low cost. Whether it's hardware or software. That's how you make the most profit. It's all about margins and Nintendo have done well.

I'm calling it right now Xenoblade is the greatest franchise that Nintendo owns as a company it is a more powerful brand than the Legend of Zelda and Super Mario combined. I believe that Xenoblade is Nintendo's most important franchise even more so than Pokemon and Fire Emblem right now. True this is all subjective and opinion-based but I'm pretty sure a huge amount of Gamers agree with me.

You can't say the Switch is not in competition just because their stable of first party software sales are so much stronger. MS and Sony are both trying to build towards that themselves. I'm sure they'd love to that kind of clout in first party game sales. MS even bought out Bethesda it was so important to them.

Recognition is a thing, Xenoblade only sold a tenth of what Zelda sold, I liked Xenoblade 1 more than any Zelda prior to BOTW but the brand is nowhere close to Zelda for a Nintendo IP

That's definitely not true, it was already an older NVidia chip, repurposed from an NVidia Shield chip, but that's beside the point. I understand why they unified their handheld and console markets into one, it was the smartest thing to do for them and I'm glad for their fans that they are doing well now.

However, for me, as a console gamer, I don't have a use case for what they offer. Their hardware is almost a scam in terms of price/value and if I want a tablet, I'd get an iPad Air or iPad Pro, which are much more versatile than a tablet with bad hardware that has a low quality screen and only has gaming as a use case.

But like I said, that's just me, my tastes don't really align with what the market at large wants (I don't play COD, Fortnite, never got into WoW, PUBG).

the switch is incredibly inferior to both previous consoles and yes, the competition, it relies too much on ports and lacks tons of features that every other modern console, including previous Nintendo Consoles like the Wii, DS, 3DS and even the Wii U had. also NSO is BS but let's be honest, it's going to work for them anyways. even i'm guilty of buying stuff because i don't have a good enough PC nor do i have a Wii.

OP didn’t bring up any other consoles but people got all defensive because they are happy with Nintendo compared to the WiiU times? Seems silly.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to Dread, Zelda, Kirby and their next system.

They aren't good at getting Namco RPGs on their platform. Code Vein, Scarlet Nexus, and Tales of Arise are essentially anti-Switch exclusives as they appear on everything BUT Switch.
