Apple Preparing a ‘Portable Hybrid Console’ With a Brand New SoC That Offers Enhanced GPU Performance Increase

This should scare the pants off MS and Sony. Nintendo not as much, since their first party games are what nintendo consoles live on. If Apple start getting the cheque book out and can get third parties on board they could very quickly become a big player and start stealing market share.
If apple could somehow gain control of fifa, nfl football and call of duty exclusively that could definitely take a big chunk out of the ps/ms consoles.... or just result in a huge number of really angry punters

According to the article it won't be competing with Sony/MS.
" From a design standpoint, it’s a hybrid, meaning a portable and a home console, so that’s why this will directly compete with Nintendo, not Sony or Microsoft."

That's why I suggested a partnership with ms and sony - filling in that gap. I think it's a mistake to think apple is stupid, they are one of the most successful and profitable companies in the world. They aren't likely to launch new hardware with no software in place.
Wait... what do MS or Sony need Apple for?

That misses the context that they would be yet another player filtering the exact same third party games as MS and Sony.

Oh and this here proves this entire article is a joke just to get clicks. Give me a break :messenger_tears_of_joy:

New info that I have sourced is saying Apple is working on “their take of a premium hybrid gaming console” and that “games rivaling Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey” are almost ready to go.

We don't know what games Apple will be making or capable of(major acquisitions could happen as well) if they are in compete mode with Nintendo.
Certain 3rd party games on this device that aren't on the Switch could be crucial.

There would be leaks everywhere if Apple had massive dev teams working on AAA games. This article is complete bunk clickbait trash.

MS is bigger than Apple and been in the gaming market for 20 years and they can barely get a foothold with exclusives.

MS is bigger than Apple?
Also Microsoft's device appeal and it's success(with devices) greatly pales in comparison to Apples.

If we have rumours of major acquisitions on the horizon how does Apple already "have games that rival BOTW and Odyssey".

Face it, you're putting you hopes into some clickbait trash amateur article.

Just what we need. Mobile games loaded with microtransactions which is a cash cow for Apple besides iPhone.
You know that Apple has their own games service, Apple Arcade that does just the opposite of that.
For $5/month (or included with Apple One)you get access to 200 plus games, all without ads/IAP.

https://www.apple.com/apple-arcade/

“What is Apple Arcade?

Apple Arcade is a game subscription service that offers unlimited access to a growing collection of over 200 premium games — featuring new releases, award winners, and beloved favorites from the App Store, all without ads or in-app purchases. You can play Apple Arcade games on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, and Apple TV.”

As for the OP, it doesn’t sound plausible that Apple would do this. You can already use your iphone/ipod/ipad to play mobile games and ios is compatible with Xbox one/Xbox series/DS4/Dualsense controllers to use in games that support them.

I think Apple could actually differ themselves from the opposition. We don't need another Sony or MS, but we do need someone in the mobile gaming space shaking things up a bit. In a perfect gaming world, we would have Apple pushing the boundaries of their amazing hardware, creating the equivalent AAA games on the mobile gaming space. You have games like Genshin Impact that it's a very well developed game doing amazing, showing other developers that quality games can actually exist within the mobile marketplace. There's a lot of low quality junk that people seem to download for some reason. But I also know there's people that actually like quality games on the phone. I'm one of them. If Apple decided to go into this adventure fully, I would drop my home consoles in favor of my iPhone or iPad. They already have Apple Arcade which is ok, has some really good games there, but this can be the start of something.

Imagine studios dedicated to mobile gaming, coming from Apple. Games with good stories, good gameplay, actual fucking games. Oh man, that would be so fucking amazing. That way, the mobile market could be a good alternative to home consoles. Both can coexist.

Exactly! If they are doing big things we aren't aware of with devs not yet shared such types of games could be in development.

People comparing hardware with Steam deck, when M1 is even better than Steam Deck offers. The problem will be the overprice from Apple and the games catalog, because Apple will use the current iOS games.

Besides, probably many games will not support the console, its happening with M1 computers. Developers are disabling compatibility with M1 even if the games works perfectly.

Yes I am aware but the big reason they are fighting with Epic now is to prevent 3rd party payment options on the App Store as the bulk of the revenue they make from it is microtransactions in games. Huge part of their revenue after phone sales.

Got a link? First I have heard of it, pretty shit move from those devs.

I assume it's to stop a version of playanywhere

I don't have link, but I have M1, and from 1000 apps I downloaded on last 8 years, only 50 I can download on my Mac. Apple even have Among us icon on their website as "iOS" apps you can run on M1, when the game is disabled.

The most developers don't want to test their apps on Macs, so its easier to disable.

I also assume a part of the issue is that some devs probably have a mac version which they can distribute via other methods where they arent giving 30% to Apple.

Doesn't seem to be the case for Among Us though.

And this is where your logic is failing you. The bolded is categorically untrue.

The computational cost of RT isn't dependent on the hardware capability. It's entirely dependent on the quality of the visual effect attempting to be achieved. The lower the quality of the effect attempting to be achieved with RT, the less it makes any sense to use RT at all to solve a particular problem.

E.g. shitty low res RT reflections would be more expensive and far less justifiable than Screen Space reflections at a higher visual quality level. So using RT in this instance just to say, "mom, look at me I'm raytracing", is pure foolishness.

And the Switch has no capability for RT, as it doesn't even have any fixed-function hardware for BVH traversal and ray-box intersection tests.

Low resolution RT can still be worthwhile, just look at seriesS implementations.

And of course the switch has no RT, its pretty unbelievable that you have failed to comprehend that the conversation has been about steamdeck hardware or something equivalent.

They already have games that made more money than Botw or Odyssey and that have been played by more people. They don't need to acquire devs, already have monster amount of devs making games for iOS.

They only need to make an Apple standard controller that can be attached to smartphones and tablets and a new section of their store to highlight the games playable on a controller.

MS has been in the business for 20 years. Apple has no presence. This is desperation talking.
Apple has been getting games for their devices since the late '70s, over 40 years ago when they released their first computers. Regarding mobile games they started getting iOS games in 2007 with the first iPod Touch and iPhones, 14 years ago.
Apple generates more revenue (and I assume profit) with gaming than Nintendo, and also has more players than them.
Even if not absolutely all are used for gaming, there are over 400 million iPads sold and Tim Cook said in January that there are over 1 Billion iPhones active.

You are trying to combine what this rumored Apple device is and mobile gaming.

Mobile games generate a lot of revenue and as one of the biggest mobile publishers, Apple benefits a lot from that.

This rumored Apple device would have to appeal to a different market than their iPhone. They would have to compete directly with Nintendo and make a play for the core gamer. They have no exclusive IP to pull that off and they have no core development teams that compete head to head with Sony or Nintendo.

Honestly there tablets have enough power to run the games they currently have. They should just add a console mode to them and be done with instead of making a console. They are too late to drop a console and should have back when the first iphone was announced. If they do decide to bring one and it will probably end up like the nvidia shield or those steam consoles.

Don't insult my intelligence. You brought up RT on the switch yourself and started listing the console technical details. It's you that's confused... or you're moving the goal posts and arguing in bad faith.

In terms of hardware and catalog Apple has been merging their gaming stuff between mobile and Mac. This device will continue in that direction: using the same hardware they use for the other devices (already supported by Unreal Engine and Unity), Apple Arcade and their App Store games, pretty likely with a new section for gamepad games.

They won't start from zero, that would be dumb. They will build on top of what they already have instead.

They don't need any IP to compete with Nintendo, Apple already has more players and generates more money with gaming than Nintendo. And they sold over 400 millioin iPads and over 1 billion iPhones, they also have an insanely huge fanbase who buys any overpriced device they release.

This is basically going to be a Switch made by Apple using high end iPad Mini hardware and iOS games. Now that won't be limited for not having gamepad based controls (which tons of current iOS games already support), many devs who didn't make it before now will port to iOS their console & PC games. On top of that, Apple may moneyhat a few top 3rd party console devs to bring there some of their games and to make some exclusive one.

Why the fuck did you bring it up then? Or it's hardware performance numbers?

You're not making coherent posts.
Ok, im glad we have established that you made up that I said the switch has RT hardware.

My point has been obvious, your just acting confused because your upset that some people would find this statement below, not to be the case.

"The power budget isn't big enough to provide meaningful RT performance, the steamdeck included."

Its not hard to understand, if devs made games with RT specifically for steamdeck level hardware, im sure plenty of people would find the RT "meaningful".

You seem to think that only xbox one/ps4 games can have RT.

I'm not going to continue this debate with you when you can't seem to form a coherent argument and have to resort to ad hominem attacks in order to make yourself feel better.

If you have to devolve into such puerile tactics to win an argument, I have no time for you.

Apple has more players and generates more money because those people own an iPhone. They are 'already there' so why not spend some money on Pokemon Go or whatever the flavor of the week is. A dedicated gaming system is different. It requires exclusives and a reach into the core gaming sector.

How many people stream Netflix and Disney+ on their iPhone / iPad / Apple TV? A shit ton. What happens when Apple actually asks you to buy into something new (TV+), barely anyone gives a shit even when they give it away for free. This is going to be the same idea with dedicated hardware. iPhone / iPad users have zero reason to buy a gaming handheld by Apple and core gamers need proper software to consider it. The one constant rule for devices like these... exclusive software is paramount for success.

You're talking as if this was going to be a different, separate hardware from the other Apple gaming devices, that would require games made specifically for it and that would be limited to the catalog and userbase of this device. This is not the case at all.

There is a ton of people who plays games on iPhone or iPad but would like to have a proper gamepad-like controllers or to play them on the tv, and to have more console-like games, or people in a Mac who would like to have more console-like games. Apple will address this making basically an iPad Mini with tv out and decent gamepad/joycon-like controller made by Apple, that will run existing gamepad friendly iOS games on iPhone, iPad and Mac. And maybe will add a new store section to highlight quality paid, more expensive games.

The games made for this device will also run with iPhone, iPad and Mac, which is fair to assume will be compatible with this controller (or well, in any case they are already compatible with tons of controllers). So people with a good iPhone, iPad or Mac will only need to buy a controller to play almost all these games.

Exclusive software only has been very important for Nintendo. For the rest of console gaming, mobile gaming, pc gaming the huge majority of the revenue and games played/bought are multiplatform.

They sold almost half a billion iPads, over a billion iPhones, and I assume many Macs and iPod Touchs too. A huge portion of their iPad or iPhone users play videogames. So even if only a small portion of them buy this device (or simply a gamepad to play these games) this is going to be super successful.

Many console devs who missed to be able to sell more expensive paid games for mobile and to have proper gamepad-like controls, and to have enough horsepower, will now have this covered and a huge userbase available (part the one of this device, but also the iPhone/iPad/Mac one). So they will port or will make more console like games to iOS.

Where? They already have Apple TV and Macs capable of playing games and there's a plethora of controller options ranging from Xbox to PS5 to Backbone to Razer. Apple TV is getting destroyed by Roku and Macs aren't even in the conversation vs PC.

Who is going to buy this dedicated handheld device? There is zero evidence mobile gamers are unsatisfied with their current gaming offerings and control methods and core gamers have no interest in mobile games. While this theoretical Apple gaming device could play iOS games with no issues, they will need to do MUCH more than that for this to be any kind of success.

Apple TV has shitty horsepower for games, no standard proper gamepad (so their games aren't designed for it), isn't hybid and no dedicated store for cool paid games.

It's also known (appeared in many market reports) that whales of mobile games -that is, the ones who spend the most- also play on console or PC and spend more time and money there. And you only need to read somegaming forums to know that people miss having proper console controls on mobile and prefer having a paid AAA (these SOC will allow them) game than a mtx fueled normal game.

The new MacBooks have a CPU that's better than anything that Intel ever delivered to Apple, probably faster than Alderlake (with just 2 small cores as it should be), with media accelerators various orders off magnitude faster than anything available on the PC segment, and a GPU that should be at least on par with the PS5, probably faster than the SeX.
All this peaking at 60W.

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THE IBM PC SEGMENT?!!

Apple is just really the best right now. That's amazing performance. But ... how much will it cost?

EDIT: also nvidia claimed the RTX 3060 laptop was 25% more powerful than the PS5. We discovered that was a lie. Might be the same thing.
