For those that don't want to/can't be bothered reading Cerium's post, he says that mods are volunteers.

Cerium might buy them a hot dog and coke if they are lucky.

Cerium: "Yeah...nah..."

LMAO

I can't wait to see the (non) disclosures of all his donations to LBTQIA+@#$ foundations.

Why do they always write in novella format?

So I reached out to Moba a few days ago and haven't heard back. Although the timing of Moba reaching out occurred after my email. I'm not saying this caused Moba to reach out to the Era team but nonetheless, the timing is coincidence.

I am dropping a screenshot of the mail I sent to Moba. I do believe we need to apply pressure to Moba to take down the harmful and disgusting rhetoric Era posts in relation to those they disagree with. If that fails, at the very least, I will be reaching out to companies that put ads on Era and link them directly to the hateful content and ask them if their brands values align with what Era allows on their site.

I get that people are getting their laughs, but this reads like a cancel culture letter that would be sent to an org because they are "problematic." That's pretty low.

Nothing would be funnier to me than MOBA backing out. Or for them to realize the mistake and sell off the site to someone else.
I know and it's fine to see how it plays out and point and laugh when the time comes. Like I said before, that letter is almost word for word what a bunch of weirdos would do to cancel and deplatform people. But whatevs, I think MOBA is doing some ponzi scheming at the least with the loans they got and buying forums.

That language was used because it’s effective. I’ve never written a letter like that in my life. I’ve never even protested or boycotted a product. I’ll avoid certain things (EGS for example), but never because of political reasons.

I have no regrets emailing them. If nothing else, just laugh at me. It doesn’t bother me one bit.

None at all. I'm just pointing out what I've seen. People have spiraled out of control when they do that and act like starving wolves waiting to pounce on the next target. I'm sure you have a level head on your shoulders.
Yeah timing wise everything happened the first day I’ve taken off work since Feb. I’m on the road for work most of next week so I’ll have no choice but to stop paying attention.
I appreciate the concern, my friend.

All hilarity of the situation aside, I think we shouldn't be poking fun at this particular user. No matter their attachment to resetera or our disdain for it, they raised a lot of points that are 100% legit. For the moderation to kill off all his lines of thought this quickly, and being no-no on additional threads covering the topic or entertaining the idea of another exodus just seems really, really fishy at this point.

Let me recap the events and run down the important takeaways:

  • Cerium announcing the ownership change out of the blue
It came as a surprise to most if not all standard users, in no small part due to the fact that Cerium's role in Resetera's ownership was very, very unclear to everybody. The reception of this news changed radically when people found out that the deal was over 4 million USD, all going into one single person's pocket. Somehow, moderation team successfully steered away discussion from this extremely fishy aspect of the deal. After some time, it came to light that the moderation team knew about these developments well in advance.

  • Users feel betrayed
From the revisionist history on the inception of Resetera, to the discussion of one person gaining all the net winnings of a lot of people's unpaid work, to the kind of other communities that MOBA owns and don't really seem to align with RE's political perspectives at all, people feel like their values about community and moderation transparency, about politics and economics, specifically capitalism, have been betrayed. Moderation was also swift to discuss all these legit concerns away.

  • Mods are somehow extremely chill about it all
Despite their stance against unpaid labor, against capitalism, against being right-wing adjacent, there doesn't seem to be a single person on the entire mod team who thinks it's kinda uncool that they've been sold out for a ridiculous amount of money to a corporation for the benefit of a single owner.

  • Don't worry, nothing to see here, please move on
Despite evidence to the contrary, consisting of logic and clear thinking first and foremost, moderation acts as if no changes whatsoever are gonna happen at RE, or that nothing will have an impact on anything (despite it being pretty clear that mods and admins can only make empty promises because they don't have a say in anything anymore at this point, and it being pretty obvious that MOBA is going to want to cash in on their investment sooner rather than later). And if the community doesn't like what is likely going to happen, they could easily migrate to another forum, because they've done it before. And despite this...

  • No discussion of a new exodus being allowed
They've already begun strategically shutting down discussions about another possible exodus from ResetEra. Threads drawing extra-attention to this issue have been closed, members trying to gain people's attention had their thread making privileges revoked and/or banned, and they openly said that they won't allow mere discussion of a possible exodus in a dedicated thread at this point (which would obviously be the most pressing and best point in time to do so). This not only feels like MOBA pulling the strings and protecting their heavy investment, but it also directly contradicts Nepenthe's, for example, statements about caring so much about the community. If Nep cared so much about the users, why not allow a thread to discuss how the community as a whole wants to move on after these events? Why not a simple poll asking the users if they are okay with these changes and would rather stay or leave? Nope, it's been decided by the team that everything's alright, there's nothing to see here, and they steered valid discussions away and silenced a lot of people in the process.

I don't know about you all, but to me, it definitely feels like Cerium and/or MOBA has the team in their pocket one way or another. Maybe the admins and mods do get a share of the deal after all. All they have to do is keep the ship on course and keep people in line so that another mass exodus doesn't happen, and in a few weeks or months down the line they can even come out and say: "Hey look, folks, y'all asking for mods to be paid and treated better in this deal have been heard, we got our stimulus check from this event which we totally didn't expect to get! ACAB!"

Excellent, and no doubt accurate summary.

Let’s hope some of the more sensible Reeefugees read it, take careful note, and stop allowing themselves to be treated like idiotic cucks.

Corporate shut them down becuse they were not on brand.

Future shut pretty much all of its online stuff down and even out-sourced the digital magazine subscription stuff, it's a dying brand. Edge is kept alive because game developers forgot to cancel their business subscription to it 4 years ago and it looks nice on the reception desk.

It's not even a mistake, though. Youtube videos are usually planned long in advance and by the time the relevant part was done Scott could easily have known nothing concrete about a possible rape. I have NO issue if people in the future don't work with the guy, but for me the mistake here is later editing the video to remove the person.

I mean people are basically doing this in front of the mob:

b21wb3NpdGUuanBn

Which is messed up beyond belief.
That was more my point - Scott isn't a guy throwing out daily videos - his videos require a lot of planning and scripting, prop gets and just general stuff that can take months at times to make work. That includes that particular video. He removed the bits with him after the fact due to the backlash - and it's arguable of course he should have left it well alone, but that's the kind of pressure certain sectors of the internet put on creators.

I caution calling it a mistake, it's more of a "mistake in hindsight" he may not have even known about. But it's the treatment of Scott as if HE was the one facing those allegations that bothers me. And it's these absolutely stupid associations that just, boggles my mind.

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.

And me! But I have now finally caved in after 20 years of subs.

Reminds me I found a couple of issues in the loft tonight - one with the Super Mario Sunshine review in. It got a 9 😂

I agree with everything you say, except the part in bold. I don't think they're keeping it cool because they hope to profit out of it. I think they're being honest about not caring about the money and fundamentally not being able to complain since they're volunteering there.

I think they're simply in for power. Being moderators on Reset Era is probably the most powerful position they'll ever hold in life, and for them that is worth more than money. Overall, their entire ideology uses oppression as an excuse to gain power.
