The Raspberry Pi/SBC/Mini PC Thread

Bullet Club

A thread for fairly cheap single board computers and mini PCs. Also for things like the Nvidia Shield. Mostly used for emulation, old school Linux gaming and for streaming pornhub Netflix. News and videos.

The Raspberry Pi Zero 2 is out. US$15. This should be good in those PiBoy cases.

At the heart of Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W is RP3A0, a custom-built system-in-package designed by Raspberry Pi in the UK. With a quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 processor clocked at 1GHz and 512MB of SDRAM, Zero 2 is up to five times as fast as the original Raspberry Pi Zero.

Wireless LAN is built in to a shielded enclosure with improved RF compliance, giving you more flexibility when designing with Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W.

All in the same tiny 65mm × 30mm form factor.

And here are a couple of other recent SBC related videos and an article.

Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W review, including hardware specification and comparative performance tests.

Note that this is not a sponsored video, but that the The Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W shown was supplied for review by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. The video has therefore been flagged as a "paid promotion", as I received something "of value from a third party" that allowed me to make the video ahead of the launch on October 28th 2021.

Funny i legit just bought one 20 min ago.
I will use it in that gameboy DMG shell.
my old one uses the pi zero w 1
This will be a huge jump!
Nice.

I've got a GPi case with a Zero in it, the Z2 will be a very good upgrade.

Is emulation illegal though? Or these games are too old for copyright?
The emulation is legal. What you play on them might not be.

Haha i got the same! 😂😂
It's pretty cool. I love that the Zero goes into the cart. :D

Beware that all these other non pi related mini boards do not have the same amazing support.. so don’t be expecting great results!
Yeah, there's usually no Retropie on those things.

Can you get these mini PC type things with x86 based SOC's?

It's generally only frowned upon if you don't own the game in any other form that you are emulating, the emulation itself isn't illegal. Emulating Older systems is fine these days anyways, It's really only illegal in some ways with newer systems that haven't been reverse engineered. Something like Yuzu requires you to actually own a modded Switch to dump your own OS files & games to legally emulate the games on PC.

How many GameCubes is a raspberry pi zero 2?

I was honestly considering creating a game store for these mini PC, since I also have a orange pi PC.

You can. I've got a Larkbox, which is a tiny Windows 10 PC, and there are other similar ones out there. You can also put Android on it. The Pro version is the one to get, although there's not a lot of difference.

They are good for streaming and basic surfing. I had one out in the garage and it worked well.

Sounds interesting and worth looking in to. Currently using an old Dell Studio laptop as an XP gaming machine, may tinker with something like this to replace it - it'll be more portable at least :messenger_grinning_sweat:

There are so many images out there and I don't really fancy doing the arcadepunks clickbait runaround. Anyone here can recommend a nice clean premade image for the retropie (pi 4 4GB) please?

It probably won't be too long until there are proper releases for it though.

you can use https://github.com/jmcerrejon/PiKISS github page

Just press CTRl+ALT+T to open terminal and type curl -sSL https://git.io/JfAPE | bash

emulation is legal just like how torrenting is legal. it's how you go about it.

emulation example: (not that i would or that you should but...) if i went and downloaded Yuzu, a Switch emulator, and then I went to a certain site to download BOTW then that'd be illegal cause that's piracy. however, if i owned a certain Switch model and the game I could dump all the data on to my PC and play BOTW legally through emulation software.

torrenting example: (not that i would or that you should but...) if i wanted to watch a movie and went to a certain site and downloaded it through torrenting software that'd be illegal cause that's piracy. however, if i wanted to download (off the top of my head) the latest version of Ubuntu Linux OS then I could use torrenting software to download it. Torrenting is perfectly legal way of sharing files...you just can't share copyrighted content.

Can any of these SBCs handle PS2 emulation?
There are some x86 based ones that can but none of these ARM based things can. I don't even think there's an Android PS2 emu that's actually able to run much.

Pi4 can run Dreamcast and PSP okay from what I have seen and there are some more powerful boards that can do GameCube, but PCSX2 is not quite as mature and portable as Dolphin is.

I use a Raspberry Pi for a Pi-hole. As should all of you. Super easy to set up and removes probably 70-80% of all ads.

Edit: Holy shit those prices have doubled. That sucks.

Which pi model would anyone suggest for stuffing and old Super Famicom with? Thinking if doing this with my kids.

Saw your post the other day and have since given it a go, both the 32bit and 64bit version. My RPi4 2GB was lucky the right type and it gets the 300Mhz boost on all 4 Cores - which makes it truly viable for a couple of players Minecraft server, now so long as you have a heatsink+fan - at least going by my early testing, running java(via sdkman providing Java version 17.0.1 ), the new 1.17 MC server.jar and the files game world all out of a true ram drive.

Given how multi threaded the MC server is, you are typically getting 4 cores at the full 1800Mhz according to my cpuvolt/freq/temp script showing the occasional dip to 1100Mhz on the odd core with a voltage dip too, but temps no more than 65degs - although I think my Amazon plug (9watt PSU) isn't quite enough for the setup and will probably have to use my Switch's spare.

Bullseye certainly seems more responsive, but probably a little less stable with old HDDs or USBsticks that are way below the raspberry pi 4 diag storage test.
