Elden Ring | PS5 vs Xbox Series S/X | Graphics & FPS Comparison | beta

Can’t wait for this game!

All three versions offer two display modes.
Quality mode locks the resolution at 2160p on PS5/SX and 1440p on SS. It also increases the quality of the shadows.
The different shades of color and light between versions are due to the constant and random change of the weather. They all use the same general tonality. Lower quality of textures and shadows, and less amount of vegetation in Series S.
The framerate is unlocked on all 3 platforms. This results in a rather uneven fps rate. PS5 has a more stable framerate than Series X, but neither is it stable. S series does not exceed 45fps in any mode.
The draw distance is the same on all 3 consoles except for the shadows. In Series S, its distance is smaller. PS5 seems to have better shadows in the distance in quality mode compared to Series X.
All 3 platforms use SSR reflections of a similar quality.
Faster loading times on PS5.
In general, the beta is better optimized on PS5 (mainly because of its framerate). We will have to wait until February to see the final result.

it's chugging at times on PS5 in performance mode but that didn't bother me that much, as opposed to pop-in in larger open areas.
It's much better than previous games yes, no obvious texture tiling, enemies visible far into the distance but it's still the no. 1 thing damaging the overall presentation.
I'd much rather see it improved than the promised ray tracing, curious to see how far can they take it in 3 months.

Like every fromsoft game I will be buying on pc, but I may buy a second copy on which ever console runs it the best. If it stays in VRR range and Sony still haven’t launched it by Feb ( which I can’t even imagine how they can be that late from launch) I’ll get it on Xbox.

So so ugly.

The game is technically better on PS5 (first scene: quality 45fps vs 40fps, and faster loadings from 50% to 100% faster) but without VRR it will be clearly better played on Xbox and a VRR TV.

Series X: 2160p ~45fps / dynamic 2160p (common 1620p) ~60fps
45fps? More like 40fps for XSX (and 45fps for PS5 actually which is not great either).

We were talking about Tales of arise and XSX supposedly impressive edge against PS5, well, here the gap is about the same in quality mode as PS5 runs about 12% better than XSX in that mode in the first scene. (45 / 40 = 12.5). Could be a game limited by L1 and L2 cache performance like Death Stranding.

PS5 seemed close to 60 most of the time even during the combat scenes (55+fps). Hopefully FROM get it closer to a locked 60 by launch.

Just waiting for Cybermage to turn up and tell us that the reason for the PS5 doing better is because FROM focused a lot more on that version than the Xbox Series consoles.

No, mate, it's because unlike the PS5, the Series machines don't have AMD SmartShift.

:)

I blame the fans really. They keep buying it day one and from software gets away with this. 45 frames a ps5 / Xbox series x game ? How about optimize your shit ? Far superior looking games locked at 60 FPS.

this is just lazy development and honestly at this point it’s just carelessness from the devs

edit : btw I know it’s beta. I am just not expecting much from the dev team. Horrible performance is their trademark

😆 … These devs keep treating the Series S like the ugly step kid.

Hopefully they fix all of these issues by launch.

It's a beta. The performance will be fixed. It's the last thing they optimize. And also , keep in mind that the whole VRR is being blown out of proportion. A drop at 45fps in frame rate cannot be cured by VRR.

Unplayable… It’s just unstable. Not dropping into 20s or anything. It’s a beta

it's constantly fluctuating between 60fps and 40fps, I had my freesync hz counter on my TV on while playing it and that thing went absolutely nuts whenever I turned the camera. that is fucking atrocious.

and I have zero faith in FromSoftware's ability to actually make a game with a stable framerate on console

this is a definite PC buy, no chance I'm getting this on console.
Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro play as smooth as butter on PC. even on my old one I could max out Sekiro at 1440p and have a perfectly locked 60fps, so yeah, PC it is!

edit: and I just remembered that they want to add RayTracing after launch... that will no doubt run lile pure shit on console, I bet unstable 30fps at best. another reason to go with the PC version

It looks so last gen
It's a cross-gen title. Ofc it looks last gen 🙃

People calling this game "literally unplayable" because it drops framerates into the 40s, I don't even know what to say.
Yes, it's a bummer, but calling it literally unplayable? Gtfo

2160p and no, not even close to 60fps.

Looks like most fights will fluctuate around 45-55.

Lame.

i Wouldn’t compare an Unfinished game vs a finished one.

I will also probably get it on pc but 40 to 60 is not unplayable. It’s fine just not perfect. I don’t get why they don’t have 30fps 4k lock and lock 60 with dynamic res

Bad hand dealt to the Series S owners, from the looks of it.
Don’t know about this source though, and we should wait for the release version of the game. It’s possible performance will be better at release than in the network test.

I'll play it on my PS5 : big OLED TV with ambilight + nice couch + Dualsense always win vs desk gaming PC for me.
Luckily I’ve bought a long 2.1 hdmi cable recently and now my pc is on the oled with 120hz g sync. Noice!

Lmao no it doesn't with these drops.

100% getting the PC version.

Nicolas Cage 90S GIF
It'll be fine even on Series S with LFC, Resident Evil Village was nice and smooth and that was similar.
Plus I can force 120hz which helps smooth out frame times, it's all good.

Are you starting an argument with yourself?

self console warring, a new low for the Neogaf forums.

You could wait for actual release before claiming anything so concrete.

Forza is cross gen as well and looks miles better in Series X quality mode than on Xbox One.

There's a lot more they could have done.

Technical quality was never a priority for From Software. That didn't stop them from making extraordinary games

This very obviously last gen game really needs to be locked at 60 in performance mode on PS5/XSX. Uneven framerate really bugs me. It's a shame From has never bothered to invest in their technical competency. Or maybe it's just the engine that's the issue. I guess transitioning to something like UE would have made the development process a lot longer compared to just tweaking the DS3 engine, but yeah...

Seems like the 40fps/120hz mode that came with R&C:RA could really benefit Elden Ring - maintaining quality and solid framerate.
I always think to myself, how many TVs that have 120hz modes don’t have a hdmi 2.1 port with vrr? Is there really that many?
I can’t think there are ,any people with a 120hz tv and not rocking that sweet vrr enabled tv.

What a shit show. Not bothered I didn't get a code anymore. Hopefully this is addressed by launch. Game doesn't even look graphically demanding enough to have these issues.
