LTTP: Death Stranding DC on PS5

Kojima is the GOAT! The best thing that happened to this guy is getting fired. Love MGS but that franchise was holding him back.

Death Stranding is a difficult game to explain because there is little like it. It's an open world where the "open world" is the actual gameplay. the combat is there but it's like it's not supposed to be about it. like how there was combat in MGS but the true way is pacifist.

The online approach is great. It changes the experience positively while keeping it solo. played most of the game completely offline 1st then went online. It was a fundamentally different experience and even changes how I understand the story. The other players are the other "porters" and their presence is constantly felt while online. they change the game world and leave a mark on it more than most MMO games. When I played a game like Destiny the other players are only there in personal encounters. if they are not there then the level feels dead. The Death Stranding method is something that should become a standard part of future games. It adds to the game without the feel of tacked on pointless MP.

The story is great SciFi that isn't the usual copy paste from generic themes. Though It has the usual Kojima issue of slow paced drawn out length.

The combination of unique gameplay+online+plot kept the game interesting throughout. This is the ultimate anti-ubisoft game. And IMOO the best game of the PS4 era (though I only played it on the PS5 era).

Sony are probably the only ones that would fund a game like this and Returnal. They are still the most important publisher in the games industry.

One of the best games I've played, really clicked with me. Enjoyed the world traversal more than anything. Game pretty much just shows you where you need to go and then says 'off you go', up to you how you get there. Always trying out different routes now I've triple dipped, makes sparing a few kg to carry a ladder on the side of your pack a necessity - never know when you might need to climb some rocks or bridge a gap. The PS5 version is pretty good for the ultrawide option alone as it makes those vista's all the sweeter, tho I had already sampled that on PC.

It's one of those games tho that really needs to click with the player, if it doesn't then it has no impact at all

The DC on PS5 is superb.

It’s an impossible game to recommend because even when I sing its praises I remember the hours of frustration and bewilderment. But without the frustration I would have never appreciated the design when it was all said and done.

Its one of the best games on PS4 but I can't see myself playing everything again. But maybe once it hits a bargain or Plus then I will jump in again.

The game is amazing. Captivating story is one thing but the beautiful landscapes and presentation? Omg.
and most importantly, the simple fact of traversal is finally made to be very engaging and fun. Even the bike feels satisfying as it reacts to every rock and uniformities.

the graphics on characters are the best ever too. These cutscenes are real time?! How.
What graphics mode you played?
You might also like the last guardian. It shares some similarities

Finished it today, really loved it. It’s a bit bloated both from a story and gameplay point of view but it’s unique and the ending is an absolute rollercoaster. Looked really impressive too in the environments and visual effects.

Im usually not a big Kojima fan but I would definitely recommend this one.

Weakest kojima game in a while and the major reason why he need an editor that keeps him on a leash and trim\fix the cringe writing.

A decent 6\10 game with gigantic margins of improvements like making mgs6 or zoe 3 instead of a sequel for example.

Best thing was probably how original it is in some parts (other parts are just weak gameplay aspects from better games mashed together)

I’m starting it next. I really feel like the arc of this game has turned from launch disappointment but it has really found its audience and I’m seeing more and more people talk about it with reverence. Excited to start it (played it for a couple hours at the PS4 launch but that’s it).

Yeah, wonderful game. One of the best games of the gen. Only kojima could make a walking simulator feel this much fun and engaging.

Loved the online elements. I cant tell you how many hours i spent trying to build bridges in areas where it would help other players move around quickly.

If I love BotW and Ghost of Tsushima (the two best open world games of last gen IMO), will I like this? Is there a sense of wonder and discovery?

The PS5 version is on sale for about €35 right now...

I love Death Stranding. Perhaps more than most "recent" MGS games.

I played with my brother just as the lockdowns began and it made perfect sense. You just have to go with an open mind that this isn't a military shooter. You are a post man, and guns are the last resort.

I loved it and i would have loved it more if it didn’t have combat,

…or they should have chose between the BT’s or the Mules. The fighting feels too forced too often. I had the most fun just planning routes and exploring. Having to worry about people jumping me or poo monsters dragging me to hell messed with the flow of the game.

Its either extremely peaceful and serene or extremely aggravating

What graphics mode you played?

fidelity mode. I usually go with framerate but didn't notice the difference in frames, so just maxed out image.

Wait, did you finish the game? How many hours

40+, full stars on almost all centers.

…Having to worry about people jumping me or poo monsters dragging me to hell messed with the flow of the game.

The feeling you get is actually part of the story. I setup ziplines across the danger zones, so mostly just had story forced combat.

IMOO wonder and discovery is the best part of this game. and it's not just finding places. it's building the most efficient routes. and finding routes built by others. this is the crux of the game. On foot delivery is just for initiation. not having fast routes is probably the main reason for the frustrations some are having. The routes can be set almost anywhere on the world map.

You can find a used copy and pay the upgrade fee. May be a bit cheaper. Also, IMO, this time of year is the perfect time for a DS play through.

What do you get to use vehicles? I’m still starting out, but it feels like it’s going to be a long game for me.

It's long if you want to fulfil the porter role. if you want to just do the story and nothing else it can be done in under 10 hours.

Do the roads only deteriorate on Very Hard? On PS4 I played 300+ hours on Hard and not once did I fix them. On PS5 I've been playing on Very Hard and I've had to fix them 3 times now.

Your post is going to get a lot of hate from nerds with small penises.

I was really close to giving up on this game after about 3-4 hours. I’m so happy I didn’t! Once you get the reverse trike and weapons to take down BTs and Mules the game becomes so much better! I’m probably 6-7 hours in now, maybe more.

What a game! Truly unique and fascinating once you start to get some equipment and understand better how to approach enemies. This is my first Kojima game outside of playing MGS on the PS1 many many years ago. I’m starting to understand why he has such a hardcore fanbase.

And to anyone that feels the game doesn’t sit right with you several hours in: It will get better. Skip the side deliveries for now and focus on progressing the main story. It gets so good!

This may very well become my GotG of last gen if it stays this strong all the way through. Truly unique. Very good first KojiPro game, can’t wait to see more from them.

I’d still say The Last of Us 1&2 are undefeated champions, but Death Stranding is the first game in a long long time I feel actually does something entirely original in pretty much every aspect. The story is really out there, the gameplay is so unique yet rewarding and the visuals are just bonkers and has a very unique aesthetic design as well.

The only problem I see with the game are the looong dialogues when delivering goods or linking the chiral network. I just skip past all the dialougue at those points but I never skip the ”real” cutscenes.

Just threw a god damn mini nuke meant for Fragile into the crater! How far along am I?

Mads Mikkelsen is fucking terrifying btw. I thought he was supposed to be a good guy but now he
has his very own barbed wire-creepy doll spiderweb

Yeah, I procrastinated on the game for an eternity and one day just bit the bullet. Had the freshest and most rewarding time for as long as I remember.

From memory you have plenty to go.

Looking at it now I consider it very underrated (well, it got a lot of GotY awards) and I don’t understand how it could score lower than a 9/10 anywhere. I suspect it’s because it has a pretty slow start and many of the systems and menus can come off as kimda overwhelming. At least that’s what I felt before I realized it’s pretty straight forward and it’s very hard to fuck up as long as you have some patience and dare to experiment s bit.

In the beginning I thought I was gonna fall over all the time and that all my cargo would be destroyed but now I’m driving at breakneck speed constantly and jump over any rivers or fissures I come across. Sometimes you fall down and have to leave the trike behind to climb out but as soon as you have the ability to fabricate new vehicles and equipment it’s no biggie.

Jeez I’m watching Mamas backstory now. Pitch black and so sad.

It is underrated, in an industry constantly complaining about sameness in the AAA space, this is such a standout it should be held on a pedestal. It’s not just completely unique, it’s brilliant in its delivery - no pun intended.

Edit: although neogaf knows the score. Love letter threads come up constantly secondary maybe only to Driveclub.

Currently playing it as well after giving up a year ago and loving my time with it.
26 hours in and I just reached the Timefall Farm. I have to stop myself accepting normal orders sometimes and keep on with the main story.
Happy to finally enjoy Kojima's work since Metal Gear never did anything to me.

Did do extra deliveries on the way through to main missions or close by. You also eventually get the waking drones you can send out to do some deliveries.
