The most popular game console on Black Friday 2021 isn't the PlayStation 5 — it's the $300 Xbox Series S (due to availability)

You do understand that being "sold out" isn't the only indication of demand right? Being sold out could be a indication of low supply or high demand, or in this a mix of both. Besides, no matter how high the demand is, if I company can't stock something they can't earn a penny on it. Seems that XSS is much easier to produce and stock and those consoles sitting on the shelves are all potential sales Vs no potential for consoles which can't be produced and stocked.

I didn't say anything... I'm just sharing how things are in one country from the main toy / games retailer here.

It's a small market here.

"Selling" doesn't make it the "most popular" either. Seems obvious to me that the "most popular" is the consoles everyone wants but can't find anywhere because they are the "most popular".

"Most Popular" is hyperbolic to be sure. However, it does show that the system has an audience. If it was viewed as a worthless product and hated by all, it wouldn't sell regardless of if stock was available or not. It will only gain additional audience as new software starts to be unavailable on last-gen systems.

Yeah it's clear the XSS has an audience. It isn't supposed to be a product for everyone just like the XSX isn't for everyone either. It's just great that there are options for people of differing financial and performance needs. I must admit that I'm happy so many people who predicted doom for the console were so wrong though.

hmmm.....
So there are like 100 XSS in the whole of Ireland?, what a beast!......j/k.

I tell you what though, XSS is going to be huge this Christmas with the mix of it being widely available, and mums and Dads buying them for little Timmy.

I always wondered why Microsoft seemingly kept producing XSS stock while XSX is so hard to find, well i feel we will find out why this Christmas.

Yeah and then there is the possibility that they may transition on to the Series X eventually when it becomes more available....so in a way it is quite clever, I'll give them that!

Microsoft makes more $$ per unit on XSS than XSX

I mean to be fair many of us said XSS would be big at Christmas, i mean its totally obvious, and that was before launch when we didnt know how bad supply issues would be for PS5 and XSX.

I also wonder if Microsoft held back any XSX stock for Christmas, just so they can say they 'had a great November and December'. XSX availability seems to of been even worse than normal the last 3 or 4 months.

Doubtful.
Here is our local expert telling us that it's the least desirable console:
It is though.

It's right there in the OP :

"Though Sony's PlayStation 5, Microsoft's Xbox Series X, and Nintendo's Switch OLED models remain the most highly sought after consoles, chip shortages and high demand have rendered them nearly impossible to find."

It just so happens that it's the only one available to buy.

I highly doubt this report. The thing is still in stock at Walmart for goodness sakes. The PS5 sold out in just minutes. I highly doubt MS put out a shit ton of Series S. I'd wait till we got actual numbers before claiming this.

A quick check on Amazon's bestsellers of Nov shows PS5 at #9, while Series S is #25. Series X is #43.

Edit: Just checked the hourly Bestsellers on Amazon. PS5 at #28. XSX at #79. XSS at...#131.

Yup so goes Ireland so goes the world right? I'd imagine the same story is told in larger markets like the US for instance?

I just wanted check once more when will the XSS be removed from the market because no one is buying it? 😉

It being available to buy doesn't mean it isn't selling. Glad to see the multi-prong approach is working for MS. More people gaming is a good thing.
An item in stock or on a shelf is literally an unsold item. So there's clearly less demand for it. It just so happens that all other consoles are soldout much quicker.

To me, the Series S always looked like a product Microsoft was eager to be able to reduce fabrication costs on quickly so they could drop the price and attract more people to the Xbox ecosystem (which includes the heavy hitter Game Pass). I figured they were hoping for a target price of $200 - $250 as quickly as possible so people could basically impulse buy the thing and get hooked on Game Pass - or at least always have a console to play their exclusives.

If this is the case, well the pandemic and chip shortage threw a wrench into those plans. But at least now Microsoft can sell whatever stock they have as quickly as possible this holiday season.

Less demand=/=items on the shelf.

If there is less demand for it, you wont keep those items on the shelf. You keep it on the storage, and sell it online. unless its food, or house items.

Space shelf is valuable.

With supply being equal, items on the shelf does mean less demand compared to a soldout item.

Rykan Rykan can you please make it make sense for us please?

Any questions, gentlemen?

Sold out items depend on the stock that you have.

You can have 5 ps5/xsx and they will sell fast. But 100 xss wont be sold fast. you will have them available. Stock availability will go to the one that has higher numbers. and this point, its the Xss.

Its meaningless to judge the console on availability, as something no one wants. It will be the item most people will buy it, since other consoles arent on the store.

By sell fast do you mean sold out fast?

If you put 50 PS5's or XSX on the shelves and 10 XSS, the PS5 & XSX will be sold out far quicker than the XSS. The demand is significantly higher.

the 10 xss will sell faster. It doesnt matter what demand is there. The one with cheaper option, and lower stock will sell faster.

By the time both consoles are 40 stock sold, the xss is sold out.

I think you severely underestimate the demand for proper next gen console. Theres a reason both of these machines are scalpers primary target and nobody bothers to do the same for Series S.

Idiotic article. XSX and PS5 are still unbuyable... What?

Bro, you're linking like the only country that has this problem, Ireland... Talk about cherry picking.

And you are saying those systems won't sell then? Just because something is in stock doesn't mean it isn't selling. The original argument was that it would be discontinued. Now it's 'it' s not outselling PS5!' Pretty big distinction. Goal posts have moved.

I would be one of the people that picked up another XSS. I'm done looking for impossible consoles. I'll probably check back in when a PS5 Pro comes out, but if it's this difficult, fuck that also.

How is it tracking against the Switch? Most popular could mean out of available options as well. Still far cry from predictions that it would be discontinued soon.

Switch is still outselling everything, isn't it? Major difference there, I believe, is Switch has a more mature supply chain.

But yeah, those who predicted dreary future for XSS have thus far been proven incorrect.

checking Amazon makes no sense since it’s been out of stock since Nov 22nd. And only came in stock on Nov 21st.

When you can check hourly bestsellers on Walmart or GameStop, then you can put that forward as proof

These new Series S owners are going to have major FOMO soon … 😆

I will not be surprised if GameStop gets a flood of these for trade in when the PS5 and Series X become more available

FOMO? Speak to actual Series S owners and they’ll tell you that the games look and run well on the console.

While some will trade up later, it’s still a win for MS since it’s very likely that anyone trading in for the bigger consoles would be targeting the XSX, as Gamepass is a major draw.

im sure Gamepass is way more attractive on the discless XSS than the series x

Sales from 3rd party sellers is probably why it's up in the hourlies. Doesn't change the rankings for the month, regardless.

Moderated wildly
A lotofpeople were saying this. A much smaller chip less memory etc Means they can churn these puppies out. It was always going to target a different buyer than the higher end consoles. I’m just annoyed there’s no good deals in the uk as I wanted to pick one up.

seem to be debating the definition of 'popular' by talking about the metric.

I am just impressed if it's actually outselling the PS5/XSS now and suspect it might be the same at Xmas times again.
