ps5 SSD Upgrade

I don't have a PS5 yet, but I was curious about the SSD for those that have upgraded their storage. Pre-launch the super fast SSD was a big feature Sony was using to market the console. I don't seem to hear much about it any more. People were saying it was going to allow the PS5 to do things in games that other SSD technology won't be able to do .

It is too small in my opinion, so I'm guessing that many people have upgraded their storage with a standard SSD. My question is, are you noticing any difference in games that run on the Sony SSD vs. the aftermarket SSD? Do you move the games back and fourth between the two for a better experience, or just leave it alone. Is the Sony SSD that big of a deal, or was it just a marketing metric they were pushing pre-launch.

There is no difference. Just buy a compatible ssd and you should be fine. There is a big thread you can refer to.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
There is no difference, all my PS5 games were installed on my m.2 SSD.

However we are still in the first year of current gen, who knows next year on wards there will be PS5 games that will fully use the internal SSD speed.

But if you ask me which games that load almost instant on PS5, i would say games like returnal, GOT, RE village and there are more.,,

As of now nothing takes advantage of the speeds so you are safe to upgrade to storage to slower SSD

Possible future games make take more advantage of the PS5s SSD speeds but who knows when and even then you will have the internal SSD for those games

No difference at all for SSDs that meet the PS5 specs. Just go with whatever is cheapest that meets the spec. A 2TB drive can be had for under $350 right now.

Its not the actual flash storage that makes the PS5's SSD fast and unique.

Its the dedicated hardware inside the SoC. And the M.2 SSD users add also benefits from the SoC's I/O block. The entire point was that users would get the same experience whether playing games from the internal or from an M.2. Because of the system.

I would not take this advice. If you're going to spend the $$$ might as well buy one that is in spec. The savings aren't that significant for in spec vs out of spec.

Maybe but I have seen the slower 1TB options for under $100 for Black Friday and you gain no advantage for spending twice that atm and this is coming from someone that has a 2TB 980 Pro in mine

1TB PCI 4.0 for under $100? I missed that. Do show. I have seen plenty of 3.0 drives for good prices, but not 4.0 in that price range.

I would get the wd 850 500gb for $89.99 before a slower 1tb. With kraken compression it’s a much bigger drive and a nice buy and you’re future proofed.

You should watch the videos on twitter first. They were right. Its insanely difficult to install yourself.

I looked away for a moment and somehow my fist was up my own ass, and I'd put the screwdriver through my cheek. I called a professional to do it at the personal cost of all my pride.

Speed is fine. I don't really notice a difference between the two myself. Its a godsend transferring shit like rdr2 though.

Have PS5 and still rocking with the internal SSD, no reason for upgrade as of now. It may seems small when you look at the internal size only but when you look at the game sizes its actually smaller than ps4 games or many games even smaller than xbox series X which has 1Tb in size. So, effective PS5 SSD size is equivalent to 1TB , if not more than that.
When devs are taking advantage of new compression tech of PS5 for next gen games going forward, the files size won't matter much.

It’s possible to change the ssd but what’s the point PS5 came out with quickness.

Very well could be the better buy getting future proofed but also has to weigh the option of doubling the size to 1TB for $10 more to not gain anything at this moment but agreed who knows about future games.

But like I said as well if a future game requires those speeds then you have the internal.

I am not near arguing the slower drive is better as again I have a 980 Pro in mine I am just providing a cost saving option

I found this PS5 branded one anyone tried it yet? Looks solid.
Looks neat to me, would love to hear about it.
I have it and the elecgear but I’m just going to wait for the promised comparison video. In the video before last, he mentions the elecgear being a bit better for a lot more $ so we’ll see when the head to head comes out. I saw some comments saying that the elecgear takes cool air from the fan that is meant for the console. But, in the comments, the guy said that he did the comparison with the faceplates on. Even though they are off in the side by side. So the elecgear was way cooler with the plates on vs that cheaper heat sink.

My problem with the expansion SSD is that I won't be happy with anything less than 4TB. And even that seems dinky to me considering the fact that I have 2TB internal and 8TB external on the PS4 Pro, and space is getting tight on that.

Being a game hoarder is going to be very expensive on PS5. From my quickie investigations, a compatible 4TB SSD is going to cost as much or more than a PS5 itself. Once I actually score a PS5, I'm gonna need a large package of Vaseline for that SSD.

The SN850 is working fine within specs.
Just because It runs hotter doesn't mean It's worse.

SN850 is still one of the fastest drives available and has good value for the money.
👍🏻

I bought the SN850 because most tests showed it to have the best performance overall. I’m not worried about a slight temperature difference. But yes there are cheaper options that will work fine.

Seems like the firecuda 530 has the fastest speed anyone has this drive in their ps5

It’s hard to argue with the Cerny recommendation. Even if WD bought him a Ferrari to say it he doesn’t strike me as someone who would put his rep on the line for something subpar. So even if it isn’t the “best” it’s probably pretty close if he put that out there in a tweet.
