Man I've played one and half of those (Metroid Dread and Halo Infinite Multiplayer).
Need to get me one of those next gen consoles at some point.

Surely the industry of videogames (especially the most famous outlets) yes it behaves in a partisan manner, always and only safeguarding its own interests. And on this I could think like you, but then, I look at small indie productions like Hades from Supergiant games ... which despite not being initially pushed by any famous outlet .. managed with word of mouth thanks to the quality of the game to force the outlets to talked about it. so I guess it's a bit of both sides' fault

Hades hasn't been pushed by famous outlets? Hades has been given so much pushing by big outlets that its butt and back must hurt by now.

Big western outlets LOVE to push small indie games, because it's a good way to push the false idea that they don't just follow the mainstream. Of course, that's only when they're western and adhere to the western ideas they also want to push.

The latter two would be considered sweet XBLA games, but not enough to crack a legit top ten for the year.
Name me a better co op game in the last 5 years that’s better then it takes two. I’m serious. I’ve been craving a similar experience since I’ve beat it with my son months ago.

I don't have anyone to play it with. Maybe I'll enlist one of my kids and see what the hype is about.

Japanese games are losing appeal to the general public because western press keeps pushing western games and generally ignoring what isn't western.
Maybe if they stopped using the same trash settings, with annoying characters, boring tropes and tedious gameplay, people would have loved them.

No offense to Japanese games, but they need to get in touch with modern games.

8) It Takes Two
7) Forza Horizon 5
6) Life is Strange: True Colors
5) Metroid Dread
4) Returnal

Games from that list I played so far this year: Forza for an hour on xcloud. Halo Multiplayer, just started campaign yesterday and that's it.

Or maybe you need to get in touch with the fact that not all games are for you and not being for you doesn't mean they're not "modern.?"

There's nothing in the extremely varied settings, characters, tropes, and gameplay that one can find in Japanese games that can objectively be defined not "modern." 🤔

This is more or less how I feel. I was born in the early 80s so the overwhelming bulk of games that I played were Japanese games like Mario and Sonic, etc. PSX comes around and Japanese devs began to make more mature titles like Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil, which was a great segue into games like Morrowind and Halo and Half-Life, etc. Western games are far more appealing to me, by far.

Minus Life is Strange, this is probably my list in a different order.

Inscryption is hot. People should play Inscryption. It's just such a hard sell because the less you know the better.
Is it a horror / scary game? It was pretty high on the Steam best sellers when it first came out and is still in the top 10. No thanks I'm sure to the overwhelming positive reviews.

Can't argue with the list even though Life is Strange is... If I speak I'm in trouble.

I also didn't get on tremendously well with Returnal so would swap that out for Ratchet and Clank. Other than that, solid list.

It's horror themed but it's hard to call it a horror/scary game when it's so tongue in cheek about stuff.

I never heard of Inscryption until now. Is it actually a card game or something else?

Card game yeah, there's more going on than that and saying any more is spoiling it, but it's a card game at its core. Might turn people off but it's not overly complex, while still being deep/inventive enough to be fun.

It's very much got a beginning and end but I'd play it again happily and I rarely replay games these days.

Nice list, it really shows what a great year Xbox first party has had and it is SOOO great to see the Chief is back at the top spot where he belongs.

Is that just advertising for halo 2?

Only a few titles there are worthy... as Abriael noted, only western games? And dafuck is LIS doing there, especially higher than Psychonauts 2?

Modern games, as in evolving your gameplay, and how your characters interact.

Western games have advanced their gameplays, and reached human interaction level. While the Japanese games, got stuck in wishful interaction, which is full of cringey moments.

While some games have very good gameplay, it's the interaction and the dialoge which kills the enjoyment of the game.

Western games have its share of cringe moments too.

So they need to be more like military shooters!?

Returnal shouldn’t be on there, nor Deathloop or Halo Infinite. What a shite list.
Oh it very much does. 343i blew away my very low expectations with Infinite. I was legitimately expecting another trash-tier halo-in-name-only just like with 5 but what we actually got was the best halo game we’ve seen since Bungie at their peak.

i would personally swap metroid with re8 and replace deathloop with ratchet and clank but otherwise this is actually a solid list.

I am personally glad that neither bf2044 or vanguard are on this list. Both are easily some of the worst of their respective franchises.

You have made a list of catchwords and vague concepts with no meaning at all.

I mean you really aren't rebutting what he is saying though. You just boil down his words to a simplistic form and blow him off. Not everyone has to like the same things you like, but if you are going to engage someone in a discussion at least do so in good faith.

No, I am not, because there's no meaning in rebutting a list of catchwords and vagueness with no meaning.

As seen below, the user simply makes the equation "what isn't for me is bad" which is completely irrelevant to any kind of discourse.

Wow, considering I have not played more than 1 of those games, can I still call myself a gamer? For me, this was a bad year for gaming. Lots of games I was looking forward to, but ultimately the game were just so-so. Nothing stood out much. Cyberpunk, which I consider a 2020 game, was the last game that left an impression on me. Tales of Arise was ok. Forza Horizon 5 was ok. Ryza 2 was ok. Predictable games from a trusted series. Enjoyable, but nothing mind blowing or super exciting.

There is no catchwords, if you dont understand it.

Japanese games simply tend to focus on wishful fulfillment, instead of doing grounded games. You know, the games that questions your morality, not focused on teens only, trying more mature characters.

People dont want to play with 12-16 years old characters. We aren't kids anymore.

What you played as kids, wont translate to when you are a grownup. Your perspective changes. What you tolerated as kid, you wont tolerate it, when you are adult. Unless you are that kind of person, who is interested in those kind games.
