Original Xbox designer Seamus Blackley on online abuse: ‘This isn’t the future of Xbox Live we envisioned’

IbizaPocholo

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

Quote retweeting Australian streamer Grenade Queen, the developer said that “This wasn’t the future for @xbox live we envisioned.”

The original clip, which has been viewed over 400 thousand times, shows Grenade Queen playing a match of Halo Infinite while two unnamed teammates hurl abuse towards her, saying that the game “isn’t for her” and that she should “go play Valorant or something and get two kills”.

He goes on to say: “I know this isn’t new. I know you’re angry because nothing has been done for a long time. You’re right. It only motivates me more. It’s possible to clean these environments up. Let’s do it.”

What time is it?
Standardizing voice chat certainly made things worse. The "solution" was party chats but that often hurts the overall experience of games. Moderation and harsher penalties (account, console, IP bans) for verified reports is the only solution.

Developers, stop simping for these women, they are never going to have sex with you.
Unless you cast them in a voice in every game you make, then you get a mistress.

Shocking twist: talented inventors fail to grasp the basics of human nature, horrified to see what the world has done with their work.

How'd Tay workout, Microsoft?

It is what it is. I've been chewed out and cursed at online since I was a boy.

I remember getting chewed out playing PC Rainbow 6 back in the day.

I disagree. the problem was removing dedicated servers. Playing with the same regulars is what was fun back in the day on PC. They removed all that with match making.

It was the best type of match making because you were able to pick and choose how you wanted to play. You knew what you were getting into and who you were playing with. Your solution is harsh and hurts everyone. With servers abusive people all played together and if you didn't like it you could just go somewhere else. A federated decentralized system. Instead of one size fits all.

She has a pretty terrible score but there is no reason for the community to be pretty shity to newcomers. This is a game that made tea bagging ubiquitous though so I'm not sure what they were expecting.

This is aimed at Seamus Blakely I'm guessing?

Yeah I mean people have been doing unsportsmanly things and talking shit for decades on these type of games. Not sure what he was expecting now.

Me personally I don't talk shit to teammates who are doing poorly in CoD matches because what would that achieve other than put them off the game. I just try to win the game in spite of that. Sportsmanship is a thing in competitions. Football players don't go teabagging or hurling abuse at teammates/others after winning or losing a match. Don't see why that can't apply to games.

I don't either, but I used to and it was fun. I think there's an age where is funny and then you should grow out of it. As far as this video it's nothing you would be surprised to hear in a pg-13 comedy movie.

I was expecting a bunch of drunk guys cursing and yelling racist stuff. Instead it's handful of guys who said show your tits, go play Fortnite and no wonder Master Chief isnt a woman.

Wow. Online game chat has reached apocalyptic levels of cruelty.

Easy way to get rid of it. Tee person hurt reports the people and MS looks into chat logs to see how bad it really is, and ban if necessary. Something they've had in Xbox online service forever.

Can we at least stop all these high KDR players from fucking my dad and mum. /joke

Simplest solution is to have a report for chat audio that records the game chat audio for XBL to actually take action. XBL are passing the chat data anyhow, update the T&Cs and actually get your support departments to take action. Pretty easy legal and tech to implement. We don't need another crusade, just actual corporate investment in non-revenue generating segments of their services.

I saw this in action the other day in CoD. This girl got featured on the play of the game so a guy decided to praise her. She made the mistake of replying back and simply said Oh Yeah. Some fucking incel heard her female voice and went off. "Shut the fuck bitch.", "No one wants to hear you bitch," "Fuck off and die, bitch". Rattled them off in just a few seconds knowing the round would end and the lobby would be split up. What a brave man.

These pieces of shit need to have their consoles banned. But Sony and Microsoft would never do that.

The cod lobbies were toxic, but they were fun with guys shit talking each other. And it almost always happened when someone shit talking. This girl did no such thing other than accept a compliment. This guy was ready to pounce and quite frankly, he needs to be fucking medicated and locked up in a cage until he can sort out his issues with women. This was not your typical shit talking, and neither is what we see here in this clip. They are harassing her because they know she is a female streamer. Hope Phil bricks their fucking consoles.

Microsoft should start blasting accounts.

Maybe pay that funny guy with CP and the adaptive controller to do a comedy sketch where he moderates live, and goes around nuking toxic bullshitters like firing the Death Star. Raise awareness that bad shit will happen if you're a dickhead.

Take a chill pill, mate. You are giving a loser more effort and time than they are worth. Report, block, and move on. Letting them live in your head rent free is them winning.

They shouldn't have talked to her like that but let's be real this has been a part of online gaming for almost as long as it has been around. I pretty much stopped playing online for the most part because I was tired of hearing people use gay slurs, calling people the N word, sending messages telling me to kill myself because I happened to kill them in a round lol. If I do play online I mute everyone I don't know. None of it impacts me personally, I am an adult so I don't walk away crying or thinking I should kill myself lol but it does take the fun out of it when everyone wants to act like an asshole instead of just trying to have fun together.

I played COD to death during the 360 days and the amount of online smacktalk I didn't even think was bad. Most people said nothing.

I'd say the worst park of having everyone's chat on wasnt even cussing or insults. It were gamers blasting music or had a bad mic with terrible static or echo. Or the guy's mouth was too close or hitting his mouthpiece making weird noises. These were 10x more frequent than the occasional guy slinging insults or trolling.

People born in the country, around dirt + animals, have much healthier immune systems than those born in hand sanitizer.

Bad games encourage this kind of behavior because the game mechanics aren't interesting enough to capture our amusement.

This is cringe and those guys should get a life but as you can see it goes both ways. She's also not the most friendly gamer it seems.

Also, i've been threathened so many times as well when I either played well, or bad or whatever inbetween. Hate messages after fighting games, or people complaining about me stealing kills in Gears. Doesn't this happen to anyone? This is a reason Mute All is the first thing I'm looking for in a game and you can mute all in Infinite as well. But obviously she's looking for clicks.

If with randoms, Mute all and just play.

What I learned from 10 years of online gaming is that my mother really likes to sleep around. People are shitty online, and sometimes you just have to deal with it. Don't like it? Report or mute them and move on. Not much else you can do, honestly.
