Horizon Forbidden West Rated by ESRB

Rated Teen for Blood, Language, Use of Alcohol, and Violence

Rating Summary
This is an action-adventure game in which players assume the role of a hero (Aloy) traveling to discover the source of a mysterious signal. From a third-person perspective, players traverse post-apocalyptic environments/landscapes, complete quests, interact with characters, and engage in combat against enemy tribes and robotic creatures. Players use slingshots, bows, javelins, and spears to kill enemies in frenetic combat. Puffs of blood are depicted as human enemies are hit; blood stains also appear underneath bodies in some environments. Players can also perform stealth attacks (e.g., spear impalement) to eliminate enemies discreetly. Cutscenes depict additional acts of violence: a character impaled by swords or spears; a character crushed to death by a statue. The game depicts drunk characters stumbling around, and in one area stating, “I'm inebriated”; one cutscene depicts Aloy drinking beer from a mug; several background characters are seen drinking alcohol in taverns. The word “sh*t” is heard in the game.

Meh i was expecting a bit more violence/blood for the combat against humans, the first one was stupidly tame on this aspect.

Why? Who gives a F about M ratings? CoD and GTA is full of kids, just like they always were and always will be.
It’s uncessecary. Blood & gore doesn’t automatically make a game better or more interesting. If it fits the theme of the game (god of war) sure, but the tone of horizon doesn’t warrant it.

Horizon is more tonally similar to uncharted. It’s action and shows a bit of blood only because it has to for immersion purposes but its more of a popcorn flick.

God of war and tlou 2 are themed around violence so it makes sense that everything surrounding it is turned up a notch. Playstation has enough overly violent games, its good to have variety. Sackboy, bugsnax for younger audience, spider-man and horizon for teens and up, and tlou and god of war for older gamers.

Also, believe it or not some parents do care what their kids are playing. Not everyone wants their 12 year playing games where people are being disemboweled and decapitated all day

Poor kids.

I had so much fun in GTA, MK, Soldier of Fortune, Doom, Quake, Unreal Tournament...Would never exchanged that experience for Fortnite, Mario, Pokémon, Minecraft or Horizon lol I still remember that GTA mission where you had to steal a bus full of people (some tree huggers mafia iirc) and send it under a car press/meat grinder to make some burgers 🍔. Gaming at its finest...

yeah, no.

Some scenes in horizon like when
ted faro kills all the alphas in the room by suking out all the oxigen or when the young noras get slaughtered at the end of the test at the beginning of the game, not to mention some pretty dreadfull audio logs where operation enduring victory was organized are all far heavier than anything inside Uncharted

The game literally talk about the exctition of humanity...it is not light hearted and there is barely any humor.

I never wanted dismemberment or excessive gore, but maybe some more realistic blood and wounds, that small evanescent nube of blood that you barely see doesn't cut when you get hit by a charged power-arrow in the chest...

Dude you are talking to a guy that would insert gore on the fucking tetris...

But i'm reasonable\realistic enough to know that sony doens't want a M rating for horizon.

It would be a waste to turn it into an Mature rated game just for a bit more blood.
No kidding. It’s a waste to not remove human kills all together. I don’t understand their thinking there, why are they aiming for teenagers and adults here? This game could be the coolest game ever for kids, they have robots that looks like dinosaurs, it’s a gold mine, there could be LEGO, toys, TV shows, it could get Pokémon numbers. Really, the machines are absolute top notch quality, among the best enemies in gaming. Meanwhile the bandit fights are so incredibly boring, worst part of the first game, poor man’s Assassin’s Creed.

The fighting/combat does look much improved for this game. They seemed like an afterthought for the first game cause they knew just fighting machines alone wouldnt be satisfying.

This game they seemed to really go back to the drawing board with the combat system. I’m actually more exciting to fight humans in this game than the machines.

The state of play and their write ups about how that was a weak area for them in the first game.

Richard begins: “The goal was to make human combat as deep and challenging as machine combat. This meant extending the combat system and adding more variety in the way you encounter human enemies in the world. We want to give the player the option to engage in their own playstyle, whether they prefer ranged or close combat encounters. Switching between strategies resulted in a lot of transition animations which feel smooth and reactive.”

The combat team added a neat new feature to make switching between ranged and close combat feel even more rewarding, according to Charles. “The resonator blast rewards players for using spear combos: whenever Aloy attacks with melee, the resonator in her spear stacks up some energy. This energy can be blasted at the enemy and will stick to them for a short duration. Shooting it with an arrow before it dissipates will deal a huge amount of damage! This mechanic creates a powerful synergy between close combat and ranged combat, encouraging players to transition smoothly between both.”

“We hope players are just going to have a lot of fun fighting these enemies,” says Arjen. “Initially outnumbered, but then to find their own solutions to the obstacles that the enemies provide. The machines can be formidable enemies, each with their own pacing and unique attacks, yet it should be possible for players to take control of the situation and win by using different tactics. Melee combat has gotten a significant upgrade and in combination with the resonator blast system allows you to string together some pretty impressive moves.”

Looks cool but a combo slice and a slowmotion kickback arrow shot? Would be a better game if it were just machines evolving and taking over the planet so i could play it with the kids.
