I love my PS5, but this has to be the worst design ever produced

The NEED for a stand is indeed minor, especially since it's provided free of charge with the console. But unfortunately the stand is poorly designed. Why for heaven's sake does the damn thing slide, tilt and pivot when you press the eject button to remove a disc?!?

Assuming I'll be able to get one, I'll be upgrading to a major hardware revision (or pro version) as soon as they are released.

You're talking about using the stand in the horizontal position right?

I use it in the vertical and my console seems stable. I guess the screw helps with that.

Why because we never had a thread on it here? There’s far more PS5 than series x.

because there is tons of evidence that ms invested the extra money to cover the capacitors etc with putty while Sony didn’t. There’s images etc.

also, there’s threads and videos galore and complaints from more or less every person who owns a ps5. If you stand right next to it you can hear it with your ears.

this is not the case with the series x. if you can grab share tons of videos of Xbox series x without a microphone whining like fuck then I might believe you.

What? There is an eject button?!
I reject discs from menu. No wobble, sliding or anything.
Wtf are you people doing.

Again, I find the console elegant, super quiet and well designed. At least vertically

Yes because SX has had more time to refine the overheating system, MS hadn't the problem to design a new GPU from the beginning, it was already available.
What gpu? Its an apu. What overheating its

hello of course this can happen fabrication errors. Microsoft is using srry i dont know the english word for it (dampening pads). Which sony cheaped out completely not unusual for things that will sell millions of units even if its just a few cents they save. But thats why ps 5 is much more likely to have loud whine. I never heard an sx with it but errors happen just let Microsoft change the console as its a "defect".. ::) . Ms went all in but the one x was silent too. Ps 4 was a jet the pro too. Ps 5 good noise level but the coil whine is sickening. But you didnt heard anything until you hear the big ampere cards and rdna 2 you can hear it in another room. Jesus huang su christ.

I guess the extra money doesn’t prevent it either. There’s plenty out there and the Microsoft forum ambassador admitted that plenty of people have this issue and expressed their concern. There are also A Lot less x sold so it would be less prevalent by an overall number. The video I posted wasn’t made with a bionic microphone that picks up sounds nothing else can hear. That’s how you record sounds.

there’s also a lot more PS5 in people’s hands than x.

I consider N64 worse in terms of design, it looked pretty horrible IMO.

Edit: Probably an unpopular opinion but I also consider the original X360 worse looking. The slim revision looked great though.
At least the N64 didn't need a stand to lay down horizontally.

I think the series X is a great display of taking a bunch of cool tech and blending it into your other stuff.

The Series S is amazing as far as performance/size/shape go.

You can call it yawn, but that's what you want under your TV.
I agree. It's still an extremely boring design though and unlikely to catch anyone's eye.

No one is going to be coming round your house and go "What is that?" Which I think is the intention with Sony's design.

My PS5 i purchased back in Dec of 2020 is still today dead silent. I can play it for hours, doesn't matter what game, and during that and after, i don't hear a damn thing coming from the console. No coil whine whatsoever.....hell unless i put my ear right to back of it, i dont even hear fan noise. All i hear when i get close is a very light fan noise.

Im not saying coil whine doesn't exist, but its absolutely NOT affecting every system, and the blatant lie i see thrown around here regularly that "well its on every system you just cant hear it" is complete bullshit. I had to ignore Darkmage a while back because he was one of a few people here that were calling me a liar when i kept saying my system was silent :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: These people that shit all over other consoles because they're unhappy with their Xbox purchase have a mental disorder i think

I guess some of us just read the manual and follow Sony's instructions: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/manuals/#PS5

Your totally right, but the insanity goes both ways. I had a jet engine ps4pro model and most of the time when I mentioned that aspect people would just respond with "well mine is totally silent, yours must be defective"

That's how it is when you mention anything wrong with any console. Someone always pops up with "well mine doesn't do it so it's not a problem and you're lying because you must mistreat your toys" or something stupid. I don't hear coil whine from my PS5 or XSX, but other people do. There's video evidence. Just accept it and sympathize.

and? Tzat doesnt change the fact aabout the coil whine . What argument is that even. A lot more what is that anyway. Everything gets sold what hits the market. Its tthat simple. Sony maybe bought higher quantitiies of production. Tsmc is booked for years.

I had a loud pro.at first It really depended on the game I was playing. By the end most games made it loud. Nioh was known for that because the menu had an unlocked frame rate and the fans went crazy. I also had peeling sticks and would replace them every couple of months. I’m sure coil whine exists but everything is susceptible to it. There’s plenty of Reddit posts about series s and x having it and there’s links to complaints on Microsoft’s forums. One of the ambassadors even said it was something a lot of customers expressed concern about. There’s a lot more PS5s sold vs series and even more vs series x so it’s safe to assume there will be more cases on PS5. But it’s not non existent on x or s even. Like sloppyjoe_gamer sloppyjoe_gamer said I have have to get close to mine to hear anything. I’ve played Ratchet, Returnal the matrix demo and PS5 DCs. I’m pretty sure they push the system enough.

meaning more opportunities for coil whine. Regardless of percentages. Less series x means less chances of coil whine or less people that notice. It’s still an issue as I’ve linked.

I don't hear mine standing right next to it. Newest revision CFI-1115B. I also don't hear the XSX at my buddy's house, nor his launch PS5 disc version. His liquid cooled PC beast makes much more noise due to how noisy graphics cards are. 🤷‍♀️

So much fudperbole from the wartime embellishments.

So I brought my PS5 over to my brother’s to let my ten year old niece check out Ratchet.
I come home to re setup my console and there’s an inch long scratch in the top of the console where the shiny black part is.

Luckily, I have a skin coming in February with my darkplates 2.0 that will cover it….

About the flimsy stand. There is an invention called duct-tape. Use it. Everywhere. Problem solved.
I think a patch of double-sided installation tape where the stand touches the body(not the corner of panel) would fix the issue for those who like to slide the console around without lifting it up.

I feel you man...
The gloss is so sensitive dont be too upset about it. After like the first day I had cleaned it with a microfiber cloth and there were micro scratches all over it, I couldn't believe it. I got a matte finish black skin to cover it though from some dude on etsy for like 10$, totally worth it.

God I remember when I argued with people here that told me "the stand is optional and is there for promotional material".

good times!

Huh? What’s flimsy about it. It has a screw, use it.
I think its that it doesn’t ”lock onto” properly in horizontal position that is the flimsy part. I have mine vertical and its in no way flimsy but not having proper groves on the panel at the back when in horizontal I would agree is kinda stupid because its prone to sliding off.

Ahh, horizontal. Gross.

Im sitting here in my living room after a workout having something to eat and l was looking at my PS5 and pondering about its design. I would like it a lot more if they didnt use horrible glossy black. Its pretty clear that the majority of people dont like glossy black plastic in consoles, its scratches up very quickly and just feels and looks cheap and tacky.

The only thing I can think of that may explain this is they could only get the supply needed with glossy black.

Whatever the reason I hope the next model does not have glossy black.

I don't have one but from what I've seen the size is ridiculous but probably the only massive flaw, the design seems fine (way better than the PS4 imo but I'm probably a minority there). I definitely prefer the minimalist type design that Xbox uses but the PS5 is far from an abomination. I also have never really cared what consoles look like

It's pretty obvious that it's an intentional choice. It's not like that piece of plastic is just off the shelf so they could get it easier. Also the launch ps3 was entirely covered in glossy black plastic and the launch PS4 was half covered in it. Someone at Sony just likes it.

If thats the case, it is a terrible choice. Not many people like glossy black.

It is no doubt the most hideous looking console of modern age. The design defies all logic. One can only assume it is for branding reasons.

Not that it matters that much to me, the Quasimodo of consoles went straight inside my media cabinet and won’t see the light of day until it’s replaced by a PS5 Pro. Meanwhile, I continue to enjoy the best controller, best exclusives and second best UI of the generation (after Switch) without thinking about the monster in my closet.

But seriously, what on earth is that design.

Yeah this is my personal hideous console of all time from the systems that ive owned. Started from Nes and had pretty much every sega, nintendo, sony and ms console along with a tbgfx 16. Doesnt matter if vertical or horizontal. Luckily like another poster my entertainment unit has a door that hides it. Whats with the stand? Horizontally you blow on it and it falls off nevermind touching it.
