ps5 SSD Upgrade

Got the Seagate 530 Firecuda 2tb with heatsink for my PS5. It wasn’t cheap, but I think I got it for a fair price. So far it’s been great. I was highly, highly considering the 4tb version, but I couldn’t pull the trigger because it was twice the price of the PS5.

Seems like the firecuda 530 has the fastest speed anyone has this drive in their ps5
I have the Firecuda 530 2tb, but I haven’t really tested the speed with a bunch of games compared to the internal PS5 drive. I think it’s an eyelash faster with a few fighting games and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, but I’m not sure. It seems really close. I get read speeds of around 6500mb’s on my PS5 so far if remember correctly. According to the reviews and tests I’ve seen, the Firecuda does seem the fastest especially with a PC.

So if you want a good ssd with a heat sink, it’s still going to Set you back like 400, for the time being.
Luckily there ain’t eight must play PS5 games out, yet.

Just give me custom side panels with fans on it near the nvme slot.
There is no need for that, why would you need it? fanS as in multiple fans for SSD? that is just overkill of overkills :messenger_beaming:

Compatible SSDs with compatible heatsink will run just fine in the PS5, people have this weird idea that electronics must stay almost at room temp to work, while some components have operating temp even over 100C.

There are hundreds of ultrabooks with almost no air circulation around the SSD and they work fine. Of course it is good to have the ssd on "average temps", but that is archieved with heatsink + installing it like instructions say.

Do you also say that "so if you want a good car, it's still going to set you back like 500 000€/$", because there are also expensive cars on the market? There are also cheaper/smaller cars.

Same with SSD, it depends of the size and model, if you need only 512GB more -> it costs maybe 60-100€ with heatsink.

I got my 1TB WD SN850 with heatsink that I installed for around 150€ a month ago.

I could buy 2 tB WD SN850 for around 320€ + 10-20€ heatsink.

So even 2TB isnt even 400€, if you wait discounts that come often monthly.

And you didnt state currency/country so it is fair to assume that we can use €.

Yes. Only The Best of the Best for me. I meant 400USD
I noticed there is a compatible 2TB going for around as low as 300, but I’m sure you get what you pay for.

The same reason I use a 1200 watt PSU and tons of extra fans in my computers.
No such thing as overkill :)

I can't remember what it's called but it starts with an H and the box is orange, it's cheap but fast. It was on ranking lists for best value. 1TB.

Wtf no lol.

You can buy a great M.2 like the WD SN850 500 GB for like $100 and a heatsink for $10.

Honestly, that’s way too small.
I’ve always complained that these consoles launched with not nearly enough space.
That’s like 2 Call of Duties.

I picked up the Samsung 980 pro for 95 pounds over Black Friday and I’ve not hear any reports of issues with that drive.

I can’t imagine putting a 2tb drive in a ps5 they are so expensive :(

Went for the Adata 1tb with heatsink.

Was on offer and managed to get it for £50 or so (was reduced, had a discount code and had some vouchers from Xmas to use). Did check out some reviews and this seems highly rated, with amongst some of the fastest current read and write speeds. Which sit above the current ps5 max of around 6500 mb/s reads and just less for writes 👍😎

Gets delivered today, so wish me luck

My PS4 Pro has 1 TB internal + 2 TB external USB.
That's 860 GB + 1.84 TB usable, so 2.7 TB total usable out of 3 TB.

PS5 has 825 GB internal, + 2 TB external USB + 500 GB M.2.
That's 667 GB + 1.84 TB + 500 GB usable, so 3 TB total usable out of 3.325 TB.

Plenty of space for me.

And if people want more than that, they can buy more.

Judging from the size of Matrix Awakens, these shits bout to get big.

I’m definitely going to just buy a 2TB once I need to upgrade. Hopefully by then, they’re closer to 300USD for a fancy one.

I’ve got 4TB external for now.

Each one each own I guess.

When you move to the next CoD you won't need to have the old CoD... if you for unexpected reason needs it you can download again just fine.

I did not need HDD expansion on PS4 and probably I won't need on PS5.
It is very hard to be playing enough games to have the HDD/SSD full.

BTW PS5 games uses way less space than PS4 games... so with the 825GB you can put more games than you can with 1TB on PS4... even the last CoD is 30-40% smaller on PS5.

Great drive that keeps dropping in price like a stone in water. By next Xmas these things will be sub 100.
PCI-E 4.0 drives will drop even more when PCI-E 5.0 drivers releases.
People are looking at the these high prices because it is something new yet... the high speed PCI-E 4.0 drives started to be released in mid to late of 2021.

I ended up just putting a dinky Samsung 980 Pro 2TB in my PS5. Bought the SSD at Best Buy, but had to chase across town to Micro Center to get a heatsink for it. It still boggles my mind that if SSD's need a heatsink to not burn themselves up, why the hell don't they ALL automatically come with one on it? And why the hell doesn't Best Buy sell heatsinks? Gah! But I digress.

At least the 2TB SSD actually gave me a full 2TB (mine says 2.01TB), unlike HDD's which always played that 1000/1024bit scam to rob you out of actual advertised size.

Eventually, I'll get a 4TB to put in it, once the prices come down from "plain stupid" to only "a bit excessive" because 2TB ain't gonna be enough for my game hoarding ways. To be honest though, even 4TB would seem small to me, compared to the 2TB internal and 8TB external I had with my PS4 Pro.

But you know, first-world problems and all that, I suppose.

Because the SSD you brought doesn’t need heatsink in most cases.

You need to understand that using SSD in a PC tower is different from using in a notebook or heavy compared mini devices for example… the air flow in a most PC towers make it you don’t need heatsink at all.

They sell them with and without heat sink included. It’s cheaper to get your own and you can get some that do a better job with heat and are made specifically for PS5.

Dope. What about a heat sink tho?

Have to buy separately, but that only costs another $15 to $20 typically

Yep. When I can get 1 TB for $99 that's when I'll pull the trigger. Getting closer all the time thanks to all the competition.

Here's another 1 TB for $129 at Best Buy.

Or a refurbished Samsung 1 TB 980 Pro also for $129

Edit: Still $400 with a heat sink, but couldn’t you just get a $20 Sabrent heat sink and call it a day?

Yes, you can use any heatsink.

What happens if you install an m.2 without a heatsink?
Your console will BURST INTO FLAMES!!!

Not really, if the SSD gets too hot it'll start to throttle speed which means lowering the read/write speeds heavily depending on how hot it is. If it gets too extreme the console will display a message stating that the device is overheating.

What’s the deal with Samsung charging $100 more for an official heatsink when you can just buy any regular one for less than $20?

I don't have a PS5 yet, but I was curious about the SSD for those that have upgraded their storage. Pre-launch the super fast SSD was a big feature Sony was using to market the console. I don't seem to hear much about it any more. People were saying it was going to allow the PS5 to do things in games that other SSD technology won't be able to do .

It is too small in my opinion, so I'm guessing that many people have upgraded their storage with a standard SSD. My question is, are you noticing any difference in games that run on the Sony SSD vs. the aftermarket SSD? Do you move the games back and fourth between the two for a better experience, or just leave it alone. Is the Sony SSD that big of a deal, or was it just a marketing metric they were pushing pre-launch.

You can't upgrade your storage with a "standard" SSD. You can only upgrade with a m.2 SSD that meets Sony's specification. You will not encounter lower performance because you should be installing a SSD that is as fast, if not faster, than the internal SSD.

The MSRP is only $20 different. The non-heatsink version is just getting a larger discount from Best Buy.

Can’t decide between the 4tb firecuda or Sabrent
There is about a 6550mb-6800mb cap for the PS5 M.2 expansion bay. Just get the cheapest M.2 SSD rated at 7000mb. Above that the PS5 wont take advantage of it.

Just get the SN850 Black plus Sabrent PS5 heatsink and call it a day. There always on sale.

Didn’t know about the cap. However the sn850 doesn’t come in 4tb does it? I know 4tb are obscenely expensive but I only want to buy one and I have a hard time deleting things from my drive for some odd reason

If you stick an ssd into the ps5 and it trips the systems temp threshold

You’ll get a message, I am led to believe asking you to remove the expansion storage. The ps5 won’t boot till this is done.

Not had this issue.

Took less than 5 minutes to strip down, remove the cover and install. Then reverse to rebuild (noticed a complete lack of dust in the console), good job on the design 👍. The adata xpg gammix blade looked snug.

Started up, then formatted and appear to have a reported read speed of in excess of 6 200 mb/s.

Games moved over and all seems well 😎

I got the 980 pro and a heat sink off Amazon and to be honest it all seems to be working just fine, I’m trying to use PS4 games on the 980 pro which is leaving me a nice chunk of space on the internal for ps5 games.

I installed the 500GB Sabrent kit last week. I know it’s not huge but it will suffice for a while as I play most third party on Xbox. Definitely like the heat sink setup on this kit. no issues when I tried a few games.

Standard SSD do you mean Standard PCI-E 4.0 SSD? Because 99% of the options matches or are faster than PS5’s SSD.

PS5 doesn’t support PCI-E 3.0 or lower SSDs.

The SSD slot on the PS5 connects directly to the custom I/O unit, allowing it to access the same tech as the built-in SSD. This is something Sony has talked about during the Road to PS5 presentation.

I just love all the cool stuff 3rd party vendors are creating for PS5. The price of gen4 SSD has dropped to $130 for 1TB. Meanwhile, the XSX expansion is still at $219. Its a matter of time before 2TB gen4 SSD dropped down to $199 while the XSX 1TB will still remain at $219.

Did they show off any new ssd at CES to help drive down the current drives ?
