What time is it?
Back 4 Blood is a mess and I just don't think Turtle Rock understands what made L4D so great. The simplicity made it enjoyable and it all of the unnecessary junk (loot, rogue lite card system, etc.) just detracts from the experience. The infected designs are also a massive step down from the L4D analogs. To a much lesser extent, I felt the same way about L4D2 with respect to the new equipment and special zombie types. L4D will never be topped and more specifically, the No Mercy campaign will never be topped. It had something that a lot of the other campaigns failed to deliver, which was fair level lengths for both the zombie and survivors.

I recently finally got a headset for my Series X and have been wanting to jump into B4B. Tried to find a lobby for newbies and no luck. Seems like I missed the boat on this one. I realize it's not up to original L4D standards but it would be nice to jump into the game with like minded people. Too late?

Well, this is an interesting example of how a decent game gets attacked by trying to imitate another series. It's a bit of a shame, truth is, there are a billion "just ok" games every year, but if you hit the right genre at the right time with middling scores, you will have a horde of youtubers just aching to make a video describing how terrible you are.

I didn't really like the game much but it's not what some people make it out to be.

That´s what happens, if you pick AMD as your CPU supplier. This would have never happen, if the consoles had real cpus from Intel.

Colour me shocked......not.

After the shit fest that was evolve, it was guaranteed they weren't gonna get anywhere with B4B. More so when they turned verses into an arena type thing.

B4B isn't a bad game, but its definetely weaker than L4D. The truth is that lots of the key staff remained at Valve when Turtle Rock became independent again, doesn't help that they also had upheld shitty practices on Evolve, they had a good gameplay design (at least from what i've heard at the time) marred with barebones content and greedy microtransactions that affected gameplay.

It reminds of Rare down the road, Nintendo's supervision just as Valve did with Left 4 Dead was very significant, Microsoft didn't had that and combined with the key staff already leaving as early as 98, it went towards the downfall.

Frankly, I dunno what the devs are smoking nowadays to implement stupid and retarded level up mechanics just to grind the heck of people. This is not exclusive to B4B, but WWZ as well. It really makes the game unfun. To think this game is worse than WWZ.

Those guys don't even imagines(or at least think they know) what makes L4D what it is. Which I believe is probably the best they failed so people honestly appreaciate how good L4D series is.

Watching this now. Man, some of these games suck ass nowadays :messenger_face_steam:
Games these days all graphic shit. Gameplay is where the real fun is, and we dont get that alot.

sadly, there is no shooter fun like medal of honor frontline , not 1. Keep confusing them.

It might not score higher, but it was fun playing it as a kid.

If that end is true, 'from the creators of L4D' is basically false advertisement.
did they really create the game? Valve bought them, during production of the game.

"Left 4 Dead was released in November 2008. The game's development was started by Turtle Rock Studios, who were bought by Valve during the game's creation, with continued development occurring at Valve's studios. Left 4 Dead 2 was released a year later in November 2009."

It seems Valve helped them made the game. Same for 2. That is why, B4B is shit, compared to l4d.

A good example of why doing something in Unreal Engine isn't a magical one size fits all solution for games.
Yes, some proof of concept video from a budding artist showing Zelda or Skyrim in Unreal Engine may look mighty purdy, but plenty of systems needed aren't present and everything needs to be written from scratch.

So cut Bethesda *some* slack for using the Creation Engine on Starfield and the next Elderscrolls. It's easier to pimp out the old engine than reinventing the wheel.

It has to do with creative mind.
You can use Unreal Engine. But if you creative is dog shit, you wont be able to achieve anything. Something, which B4B suffered from this video.

L4D though of npc carefully. Made them unique, and made the game feel alive. B4B is just variety of zombies, with no thought of npcs.

Sometimes, trying to be different, hurts your game alot. Because it gives you the wrong idea, and makes you miss the entire point of the l4d. They werent some people who were surviving, They were ordinary people. Very relatable thing.
Even zombies were normal human, who had normal jobs. you take out these element, and you lose the identity of your game. It makes it shoot them up kind of game. Biggest mistake of b4b.

Back 4 Blood is good fun but yeah it doesn't hold a candle to the original Left 4 Dead games, it feels like all the soul was sucked out of it. L4D had likeable characters and interesting enemy designs and locales. B4B's saving grace is the card system which is what sets it apart from Left 4 Dead, but in a lot of ways I feel the comparisons only hurt them. I still yearn for a proper L4D3.

B4B is not a bad game by any measure but L4D was very innovative back then. Now there are many games that pretty much copied the formula (like Vermintide).

B4B delivered the same but with tweaks that just didn't fit the expectations. If B4B wasn't zombie related (and thus having the weight of needing to surpass L4D) I believe the community wouldn't have reacted like so.

I played it thanks to gamepass, otherwise I wouldn't have until it hit $20 or less.

Never been a big fan of the genre but is not bad.

The Alien game is not bad either.

I love Creation. I hope they never move to Unreal 5 or similar, would kill what makes a Bethesda game...for better or worse. Learn to love the jank.

It's a shame Valve stopped making games.

I played the beta of Back 4 Blood and it didn't click, and watching this video I think sort of outlines some of the reasons. It's funny to think that the far superior game in terms of physics, animations, and AI is the game that released 12 years ago.

Yeah for the past 2 gens now studios have cut corners (and content) and released games that lack atmosphere, creativity, replayablity, and attention to detail. Not all games went down this route but there is far fewer studios that maintain true AAA quality. That quality has diminished quite a bit across the board.

The problem? Over bloated budgets with terrible management with a greedy mindset.

That Video was amazing. Thanks for sharing. Had no idea how little people were involved in B4B, lmfao no wonder it wasn’t fun. Excellent video.

No news really to some - but they are smoking what todays like addicts and instant gratification gamer zombies feeds them. That and micro transactions together is a lethal brew and ofc related. I don’t know how many times I read stupid comments on GAF about “levelling being slow/fast”, “there’s only 348 guns in this game - last one had 756” or “jeeez can’t customise the pubic hairs -.-“

Too many of todays gamers are taught to focus on counting completely irrelevant stuff instead of how fun it is. At no fault of their own really - as this is new normal. If fun exists it doesn’t matter if you only have a badger and a pack of French fries as weapons.

It makes me depressed.
And feel old.
Some of this stuff killed my favourite franchise just recently. :messenger_pensive:

That gave me a greater appreciation for Left 4 Dead 2. In most respects, it's still ahead of the curve.
Seeing those comparisons side by side, made me realize why Back 4 Blood felt so boring. It lacks so much in animations, detail and impact.
In comparison, Back 4 Blood seems like the work of a lazy amateurs.

Valve truly was instrumental on making Left 4 Dead 2, the great game that it still is.
Without Valve, those devs at Turtle Rock Studios have lost the ability to make anything as good.
