Returnal at 9 goty awards, easily the best

What time is it?
It takes two shows how easily manipulated human emotions are. As a game it would have been much more tolerable at 1/3rd the original length. Every level just drags on far too long.

Gamereactor Sweden GOTY voting, not added yet but they usually are, biggest gaming media outlet in the north that I know of.

(10) Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
(9) It Takes Two
(8) Resident Evil: Village
(7) Quake Remastered
(6) Forza Horizon 5
(5) Life is Strange: True Colors
(4) Eastward
(3) Returnal
(2) Psychonauts 2
(1) Halo Infinite

Halo Infinite as GOTY and no mention of Metroid Dread is kinda shameful.

Fortsa HoeRisen 1 to 4 did not get any votes at all, max. 1. FH4 (best in series imho) did not get mentioned once. They all launched 1 or 2 months earlier than FH5, enough to get voted for. Hmmm ....

I like It Takes Two but I don't think a game that requires co-op should be goty. In what's a closely contested year I think it's just a choice that allows critics to subvert picking the big IP that they should have done other years, and won't do next.

Backed up by media/public disparity imo.

Horizon 5 receiving this much praise is laughable when 3 is still by far the best game in the franchise. Disgusting how robbed that game was.
The IP has grown a lot in popularity since then which help it pop up in the discussion, but FH5 is also the better game imo, especially for consoles where FH3 was 30fps. The DLC was magical on FH3 though. I hope we’ll see something cool for FH5 as well.

Wait so halo infinite has 22 but also 2 for its mp? Doesn’t that make it 24? Either way it should replace horizon. Re: village definitely deserves a place close to the top tho

Wow Xbox has defeated PlayStation in GOTYs for the first time in how many years?
I really thought Ratchet would do better, it’s on my top 3.
But Xbox also had a bigger userbase than Playstation for the first time in how many years?
People are still struggling to buy the new consoles so cross-gen games probably got a boost in reader votes since people had actualy played them.

Count only media outlet awards and it looks like this:

It Takes Two - Media Outlets: 45
Deathloop - Media Outlets: 25
Resident Evil Village - Media Outlets: 24
Metroid Dread - Media Outlets: 23
Forza Horizon 5 - Media Outlets: 17
Halo Infinite - Media Outlets: 17
Returnal - Media Outlets: 15
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart - Media Outlets: 14
Psychonauts 2 - Media Outlets: 11

Must be 2010 when mass effect 2 launched. Iirc, rdr and ME2 split the goty awards that year.

I think next year starfield is going to clean up. Bethesda games win goty awards like naughty dog games. Fallout 3 and Skyrim cleaned up in their years and even fallout 4 landed behind Witcher 3 despite not being received as well.

I don’t see horizon, botw 2 and gow beating out a next Gen only Bethesda game. They are going to feel too similar while starfield will feel next Gen, innovative, fresh and unique in ways those games simply won’t.

For me, this was the first year i didn’t pick a Sony game as my goty or runner up to goty since 2014. I hope this first year is an aberration just like 2014 and Sony makes a big comeback soon just like they did from 2015-2020. I love their games and this year felt incomplete without a big AAA goty contender from them. Shame horizon got delayed because it would’ve easily cleaned up this year.

Just finished Halo Infinite. Fun game but not GOTY for me.

Inscryption blew me away. Then I look at the GOTY options. I don't have my ps5 yet but the rest of the games I do have access to and well... not too many bangers when I think of GOTY. Horizon 5 is a fun game but it is just another Horizon game.

You mean this year, it’s 2022 now 😉
But honestly, don’t bet on it. Sony will have three huge IPs releasing on PS4+PS5 in 2022, they’ll get a ton of votes. I’m extremely hyped for Starfield but Bethesda needs to deliver on all fronts after all the hype. Won’t be easy. However, Sony’s IPs could end up canibalizing on each other.

Assuming Starfield will clean up after Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 begun Bethesda's decline is shortsighted. God of War 2018 is one of the MOST awarded games of all time, higher than any Bethesda game. Horizon Forbidden West also looks like a HUGE improvement over the first. Bethesda has to prove they can put out a really good game that isn't buggy and dated before they get the automatic assumption that their new game will dominate awards. People don't look at them like they did back when Skyrim released. They aren't as tolerant with their technical issues anymore.

Sony's IPs won't cannibalize each other any more than they did any other year. Spider-Man was really good but it didn't stop God of War from cleaning up. Same goes for 2020 when TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima were the top 2 winners. It could very well be God of War and Horizon dominating again

tommib tommib I'm going to buy Returnal but before I do that, without spoiling, does the game have a good story or is it only praised due to its gameplay? I obviously couldnt read anything online cuz well, spoilers, but I'd like your thoughts since you keep praising it. I dont feel like playing anything else and I'm just tired of waiting for a sale so I'm just going to yolo it but I would prefer a game with some quality writing, cuz it's been a while.

Have you played Silent Hill 2? I would say the way the narrative is fragmented and even the themes of regret and desperation are very similar to Silent Hill 2. It’s an arcade game at the end but the narrative sections do emphasise the whole anxiety inducing gameplay. If you like David Lynch, you’ll love what they’re going for with Returnal.

Is it kinda like Hades where the more you die the more you learn? Can you miss important story stuff?

No, it’s not like Hades. It’s much more abstract and will leave you with a lot of questions. It’s a super metaphysical story. If you like answers and everything nicely wrapped by the end of a game, you’ll hate Returnal. But if you like to dream a bit about all the symbolism then you’ll like it. At some point in the game the narrative just kind of disappears and you’re just shooting like the biggest bad ass in the world. Don’t forget that at heart it’s an 1 coin arcade game.

Also, being a horror fan helps. Strong horror vibes through the whole game.

Oh I see. An obscure type of storytelling is not a bad thing, I like it when some games like say Hyper Light Drifter or Dark Souls are not that on the nose with the story and you just have to figure stuff out through the environment or items or stuff you find. Thanks for the info.

We will see. I think having a new IP with fresh new ideas will prevail over two last gen sequels. This reminds me of back when GOW2 launched in march 2007 on the PS2 to critical acclaim. Everyone loved it until Bioshock and Mass Effect came out and then no one ever talked about GOW2 again. Neither game was perfect, and ME was really buggy and I distinctly recall it running at 15 fps in the Frozen world, but people are willing to let bugs and other issues slide for new games.

Starfield could be the next Mass Effect or it could be the next Cyberpunk 2077. I'm excited to see more myself, but I bought into the Cyberpunk 2077 hype and got burned so I'm tempering expectations for any new IP. But I'm all for Starfield to be GOTY if it is deserved. If a new IP launches against GoW, HFW, BotW 2, and others and comes out on top then that means it will be one incredible game.

Big releases always nibble on each other, easily seen in the past, you either have something huge scooping up almost everything, like TLOUP2 or TW3, or you get a more even split like we see here. And with Playstation having multiple huge and hyped releases this year the fans might have a hard time choosing the GOTY (which is nice ”problem” lol)

I expected Deathloop to win more from the media but I'm not shocked at all that it's lacking player's choice picks. The praise for that game mainly came from media. Player's weren't near as high on it. Dishonored was a better game from Arkane.

Skyrim won a higher percentage of it's years awards then God of War in it's year (GOW had stronger competition though), total number of awards is inconsistent between years based on how many outlets give out awards as well as how many are technically counted by the trackers. Though I do agree that Starfield cleaning up is unlikely given the possible competition, it is third most likely to win GOTY after BOTW2 and GOW Ragnarok, maybe even fourth after Elden Ring (though FromSoft has historically not been favored vs Bethesda given FO4 got more awards than Bloodborne).

I do think that unless GoW and Horizon have some major innovations going on, they will be considered too derivative to ultimately win. But we haven't even seen gameplay from some of the major contenders so I think it's absolutely up for grabs. Who would have guessed that an indie roguelite would beat out Cyberpunk and FFVII in 2020?

Honestly could see elder ring and starfield easily surpassing GOW since it’s a sequel, and part of the praise for the first one was its reinvention of the franchise. This new one doesn’t seem to do much new? Could be wrong though - horizon seems to have made improvements so we’ll see with that. BOTW 2 will probably be the game to beat though let’s be real

I remember reading this same thing about TLOU2. That it's a sequel and unless it changes things up drastically it won't be as loved. It didn't change much up and then went on to win more GOTY awards than any other game ever has. It isn't even close either.

I still think all the cross gen games are going to steal votes from each other while Starfield will win the most awards. Nintendo sites will give it to BOTW2, Sony sites will give it to either Horizon or GOW2 while Starfield will get all the MS centric site GOTYs plus all the awards from PC centric sites and critics who dont want to give GOTY awards to the sequels they already gave GOTY to a few years ago.

Glad to see It Takes Two with a comfortable lead. I was hoping for it or Psychonauts 2 to win overall GOTY, both really creative games that deserve such spotlight.
LOVE Love seeing it get the spotlight. I was blown away by the game every time i played it. I couldnt believe how varied and ingenious each level was designed. It is a true masterpiece.

Oh and unlike last year's winner, it was a fun, charming, soulful and delightful game. It shows the industry can reward something that isnt always dramatic and edgy. Oscars have turned into a joke since Gladiator and LOTR won awards all those years ago. Now, it's impossible for big movies to win oscars, forget comedies and feel good movies. I am glad we arent just giving the spotlight to games that make us feel the most miserable.

Not really it didn't. The gameplay is smoother sure and it had some more open areas but for the most part it still played like the first one. Same goes for Uncharted 4 which also won far more GOTY awards in 2016 than any other game despite being on its fourth entry. God of War just has to have another exceptional story to go along with some refinements to the gameplay and it won't have much of a problem scoring just as high and winning as many awards as the last one did. Lets not forget that they aren't competing against Rockstar this year which is probably the toughest other developer to compete against due to their games always scoring like 96+. Bethesda isn't near as loved as when Skyrim released. The tolerance for buggy, janky games from them isn't there anymore.

I think Starfield will probably win the most GotY awards, but I don't think it will be a blowout like Skyrim or Fallout 3. There are way too many big blockbuster games coming out this year and I think it will look something like it did this year. The awards will be spread around to a lot of different games
