Famitsu Sales: 12/13/21 – 12/19/21

When you look at the numbers. All that adds up is the people who bought PS5s got them to play free to play games or games they already owned on PS4.
The free to play games might make Sony happy, loot boxes are big money I guess.. But from the point of view of retailers and developers outside that model the PS5 is a waste of resources.

Even for western developers, nothing has sold well apart from the typical ubisoft launch window stuff.
The situation for PlayStation in the West is very different from the situation in Asia. In the West PlayStation 5 software seems to be fairly robust, judging by the data we got in platform splits from countries like UK and Switzerland. Of course, the worsening shortages will have hampered PS5's software performance in the last few weeks.

Overall though I would not say Western developers see the PS5 as a waste of resources, far from it.

I guess, I am looking at things like Deathloop. An exclusive with excellent reviews that sold very poorly. Falling sales in COD, etc,.

I don't think either of these cases are due to the PS5 though. Arkane Studio games often sell poorly, and Call of Duty is being impacted by the release of Warzone. If we look at some launch retail software splits for the UK, we can see that PS5 often takes a big share:

Call of Duty Vanguard - 41% on PS5,
Jurassic World Evolution - 34% on PS5
Battlefield 2042 - 50% on PS5
House of Ashes - 48% on PS5
Lost Judgement - 62% on PS5
Alan Wake Remastered - 63% on PS5
Back 4 Blood - 62% on PS5

I get that they had a large share of the overall sales, but aren't overall sales of these types of games down in comparison with the launch of the PS4?

I think we'll have to wait for Sony's official figures on the current FY before we can say anything conclusive. We know that PS5 software sales are less than the PS4 first year software sales in Japan, but so far nothing indicates that they are lower than PS4 in the West.

They just posted record breaking revenue last quarter, still supply constrained, still in a pandemic, Jim ryan has his feet up on his desk right now smoking a cigar.

The biggest obstacle for sony is making enough playstations.

We know that a huge part of that profit is from add on content. Fortnite skins and crap like that. If numbers are up based mostly on that, it will change how third parties view Sony as a platform. It isn't like PS would not get releases but it would change the dynamic. From PS being their target audience to an audience. A larger part of development may go to PC gaming and some developers may even see it as pointless to invest in expensive graphically showcases when the return for the investment does not add up. I am thinking mostly of companies like Bandai Namco.

We don't really know what the demand is for PS5s. The issue with hard to get products is the demand always outstrips supply. Once the product is available to walk in and buy at a store that will change the demand.

I guess thats just how the cookie crumbles, huh?

It’s almost impossible to predict or assert anything until supply normalizes. It’s pretty much unprecedented that a console would still be this supply constrained over a year later into launch

They did, but I didn't see anything anything in there about number of software sales so I don't think we can use that report to compare number of games sold in PS5's first year to number of games sold in PS4's first year.

I agree that right now Sony's biggest challenge is its supply chain.

But there are still PS4s in Japan. Sony did not have them removed from the territory. And not even one title can nip #30. Ouch.
The ps4 hasn't been able to meet demand since 2020. Sony never bother to give it one final price cut because they were winding down production.

First of all, he's talking about PS4 software sales, 7.8M PS4 in Japan, and not one PS4 software can break top 30

Second of all, saying that PS4 hasn't been able to meet demand is misguiding....... it's because Jimbo purposely killed PS4 production early for PS5. He basically told factories to stop producing PS4 and switch all of manufacturing to PS5

And that was the right decision but the reality is the ps4 could have sold more.

No, turned out that's a huge mistake, PS5 bottleneck is chip shortage, not manufacturing. PS4 would've not been affected by this shortage since it's using older chips just like the Switch.

PS4 would still sell tons, but stupid Jimbo killed it

Yeah but if they produced more ps4 they'd be making even less ps5. Anyway I'm happy I got to sell my ps4 Pro for a fortune and hardly paid anything extra for my ps5. You gotta love when demand outweighs supply.

they could do 30% PS4, 70% PS5 ......and chances are chip shortage would still be the bottleneck

Yes but sony wants 90% ps5 to get as good a next gen start as possible. I guess the upside is there's a lot of second hand ps4's floating around as most who buy a ps5 sell the 4. I'd usually hold onto my old consoles but the price was so good I held onto the OG ps4 but sold the pro.

Do you think it has?
Of course not, like I have said a billion times. If Sony shipped 10k every week, it would have sold 10 k every week. If it had shipped 25 k every week well, that would be harder to say for sure how much it would sell, but it certainly wouldnt be the 2k it is currently selling.

Unlike you, I actually analyse the scenario and admit whatever it is really going on, whether that's for or against a company I like.

Whats ridiculous and funny, and have become a meme at this point(that continues to amuse me constantly) is the denial about PS5(and Sony in general) situation in Japan. There are no PS5's there not because they cant produce a minimum for Japan, its simply because Sony doesn't care anymore because they can't compete there anymore, given that Nintendo has driven them out of there and they were unable to adapt. And that "demand" you keep bringing up will keep diminishing, because people will get tired of waiting, the number of software will dwindle(sonce many of them are migrating to Nintendo), and thus the PS5 will sell less and less overtime, at least compared to other consoles. Hell, its already behind the PS4 and Wii U, and the chip shortage wont be fixed at least until 2023. Do you think people will wait for the PS5 Greatness until then?In a significant number that at least reaches the PS4 LT numbers?

The non existant supply proves that the PS5 wont be able to recover from this, the even worse(and actual dammning proof) software numbers further proves it, and the complete Nintendo domination also does.

So its hilarious to see you and a few other come up with no sensical excuses to explain why Sony abandoned Japan.

"Sony is worried about competing with Xbox elsewhere, so thats why they only bothered to ship 2K units this week"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

So yeah, just admit that Sony completed dropped the ball with the PS5 in Japan, and lets hope to God that the PS5 situation improves ALOT this year.

Holy smokes.

The PS5 can compete in Japan. If you mean it can't compete with a portable/hybrid platform well of course it can't and no console in Japan has in a long time. The same way it can't compete with mobile gaming market just like the Switch can't either.

When's the last time playstation got beat by a powerful non portable console? Never. The only time it ever lost to a home console was the wii and that didn't have traditional power hence the massive price difference. But even that didn't outsell the PS3 by much.

The reality is nothing competes with ps5 in Japan hence why Sony prioritise other markets. Don't be mad at Sony, be mad at xbox for at least putting up a fight in the west, unlike the east.
