LTTP: The Witcher 3

Besides the awful combat, Witcher 3 is one the best games I ever played.

And Baron Arch is by far the best quest ever made of gaming.

Locked camera sucks. Is almost impossible to do what the game suggest, playing like dumb while foes do critical damage on you. Reduce your stamina while combat, you can't jump (need to stay of vision to back jump) making huge mistakes while trying to jump between edges.
You're not meant to lock on when you're fighting multiple enemies. Just move the camera around. I don't understand any of these complaints honestly.

It was an amazing game. In my top 5 ever. I never felt such attachment to characters as in that game. They're all written and voice acted so well. And the best DLC expansions ever. Blood and Wine is longer than most standalone games.

That was the first time since Morrowind that I went on crazy game binges. I simply can't do it anymore as I've gotten older. But I put over 200 hours into that game and beat it in like 3 weeks. I think I ended up averaging about 8 hours a day playing. Don't know how I found time, honestly. Haven't done anything close to it since. But I was just so hooked on it and totally lost the time playing that game.

Damn, should i replay it a 3rd time .. Nah, maybe in a year or two when my memory of it is hazier.

I just couldn't get with the gameplay. Same for Cyberpunk.

I don't get the CRPR love at all but to be fair I dropped both games fast.

My favorite game of all time (shared with FF7).

So glad for you OP that you found the game!

I've been waiting the next gen update since current consoles launched and been fighting with myself not to play the game before the update.

I also find the game's combat just fine. I do hope the next gen version does improve it somehow and 60 fps alone will make a lot better.

The DLC will rock your socks.

The camera is the villain in this game.. it's all over the place.. hated it from the beginning and that's why i never touched the game again.

It's the writing more than anything else with the Witcher 3. Even a throwaway comment from an NPC in passing can be funny or interesting. There's just so much care and attention put into every single character, every line of dialogue, and there's a massive amount of synergy between the world and the characters, so it all feels authentic, believable and alive.

A lot of RPGS there is almost no synergy between the world and the characters. NPCs just info dump all the backstory about the world, they don't feel like real people in their own right, or they don't feel like they have any larger connection to the world they inhabit.

I'm a bit different on this now, though, because I've learnt through the tv series that Yen is basically a result of magical plastic surgery, and Triss is natural, so yeah maybe I aught a go with Triss. Then again, Geralt is an artificiail being too in many ways so maybe that just adds weight to him and Yen being the perfect match.
Don't put too much faith in what you see in the TV show, i'm reading the books right now and the show is a very loose interpretation of the books. Like most of season 2 plots didn't exist at all in the books
like yennefer loosing her powers and kidnapping ciri... They on the contraty have a mother-daughter relationship at this point in the books
. If you like witcher 3 that much, I would advise you to read the books or at least good summaries to understand the realtions between each characters, it really is worth it.

I've often thought of doing that, not gonna lie... If they're on audiobook I'll grab them, my problem is I have no time to actually read, but I ride my bike all over town and listen to heaps of books while I ride.

You don't understand because you like the combat.

Not rocket science. Some people enjoy, other don't. Is the only thing that get mix bag between players. All the rest is amazing.

The hardest part about getting hooked for Witcher 3 for someone who is on the fence is really getting through some of the slower first parts of the game (ie - the starting area and the swamp area of the big map). I mean I like things slow, but most don't realize how fucking long the story actually is. I remember when I first played it, I thought I was heading for the climactic ending of the game, and it was not even halfway through (not even including DLC).

me neither. rant incoming:

i wonder if it might be because they play it on console, or some platform they just suck at manipulating the camera in... i played it on PC all the way and yeah I think the only time I ever locked on with my camera was when harpies were like 10m above me, when i was using my crossbow (rare), or I was taking on a beast like a griffon one-on-one, or whatever... it's not like the witcher is a platforming game either, i think these people complaining about jumping have just watched a few youtube compilations after buying the game for $5 and playing the tutorial for 20 minutes... youtube compilations are about as real as partisan political videos lol, they are just cherry picked moments that have been deliberately fabricated/staged with cheat engines or just bloodyminded persistence...

I'll admit, I think maybe 3 or 4 times in my playthrough of The Witcher 3 an evade roll landed me somewhere I didn't expect, 3 or 4 times is hardly a "this game sucks" amount... unless you're going into the experience wanting to say it sucks, because that's the only way you can impress ur group of friends lol

I got really bored by the end of the game . Story still good , but the combat , the progression/leveling , build , quest/exploration reward , quest design/gameplay is pretty average .

Well not that bad at early/mid game but after 80hours I stopped enjoying it . Maybe they wasnt design for this long of a game . Still enjoy the story , but the side quest start to get repetitive ,the same gameplay witcher sense detective , follow red path etc . Take lots of work for 1xp / 100 gold bullshit.

Still my favourite game of all time , maybe after TES Oblivion .

How does this run on vanilla PS4?
It runs good and is beautiful to look at (you cannot really do much better in terms of artistic direction) but it is starting to show its age a little bit (really gross use of AO, low shadow resolution, "simple" lighting by today's standards, some bad textures) + it can have painful loading times on console (specially in menu navigation which goes slower the more items you get in your inventory). Remember that it was one of the first true next gen PS4 games to come out during last generation, AAA production has gone a long way since (in terms of visual production I mean - overall the game in itself is wonderful and has not been topped).

Next gen version should be a really nice freshing of the game

this might be true, but I went into The Witcher 3 right after beating The Witcher 2. The Witcher 2 was 10x more brutal and unforgiving if you didn't know the mechanics of the game well. I actually made a thread about it when I first started it, couldn't understand why Witcher 2 was so damn hard:

could be that The Witcher 3 just feels easier because I learned a lot of the mechanics from The Witcher 2, but even normal mode on The Witcher 2 felt nearly impossible unless you utilized various mechanics that the game didn't really explain well.

I find that The Witcher 3 does a much, much better job explaining the mechanics to you than The Witcher 2. Not to mention Witcher 2 was just more brutal in general, not being able to use potions during battle, needing to have the ingredients to craft a potion each time you wanted to craft one as opposed to them auto being crafted once you meditate with liquor, etc.

the game feels quite easy compared to Witcher 2 and much, much easier to wrap your head around
Witcher 3 is easier that the Witcher 2. I love the Witcher 3, but I can admit this. Both great games in their own right.

I'm a bit of a story whore and in the games medium there just isn't anything which comes close to the quality of The Witcher 3 for me, at least when it comes to modern AAA. Especially Hearts of Stone shocked me with the quality of the writing in a way nothing in games ever managed before or since. It's a bit of a cliché but TW3 ruined a lot of games for me. I try to enjoy things like the nu-Assassins creed games, but they almost feel insulting with the generic boring ass writing and side quests. Will definitely replay it again when the enhanced version releases and REALLY hope CDPR can come up with something at least close to as good for the next Witcher game, but I imagine it will be tough.

Have you tried CP77 by any chance ?

It's really pretty close according to me. Maybe less consistent overall but the better quests of CP have nothing to envy to TW3.

And I'd say that CP77 is even more emotional and has better characters than TW3 who you really get attached to (that's saying a lot)

I usually sleep with as many women as I can. Already banged that blonde sorceress, can’t remember her name. She’s in a hut outside of a small town. Me and Tris got pretty serious in Witcher 2 but I know Yen is Geralt’s main chick

Yen is still super salty about Tris
I was long in love with W2 before three came out so I initially chose Triss but damn CDPR made the Yen rejection scene so well. I felt sick, so i reverted to old save file to spare a 3d animated persons feelings. smh

The drunk scene was my highlight of W3.

I played it at release my hype levels were through the roof. I quit halfway through as it was so buggy and decided to give it another go when they release a new expansion, but I guess we'll see when that happens. I like the game, much of it was well done story wise. But at least then I felt it was a 7/10 experience and didn't grip me the same way. Partly I will admit it's that I prefer the Witcher universe to the Cyberpunk one.

Gonna give it another go one day.

Although I played it on PC, I used an Xbox Elite controller, and I had no problem handling groups without camera lock. So I don't know what people are talking about.

I didn't like it at first

Then it became my best game of the past 20 years

This is exactly my experience as well. I bought into the hype and picked it up and didnt think much of it at first. The world was nice but combat was kinda clunky, Geralt was a pretty stiff character and I just didnt quite jive with it for probably the first 5 hours. It slowly digs its hooks into you and doesnt let go. The world is just so interesting and there were always surprises around. The quest system was probably the best, how you could just stumble across what seems to be a random occurrence and it turns into a multi part quest.

I think I checked off every '?' on the map.

Because gameplay is not great at all. But the story, atmosphere and the whole narrative universe it's what make it great.

Yeah. The Witcher 3 didn't even show up on that Japanese poll of best 100 games. I think BOTW was#1. Japanese gamers have no taste (or need to broaden their gaming horizons)

I wholeheartedly agree with this. TW3 also ruined open world games for me. It is still doing better what other studios can only dream of capturing in new open world games. For a game that's approaching 7 years old, it is showing its age a little bit. However, the sheer quality of the game puts others to shame. Which is embarrassing for other developers.

TW3 knocked everything else on its arse. Then other games tried to get up before the 10-count, and Blood and Wine gave them a TKO. It's astounding to me that the DLC still vastly outshines other developers' mainline games.

I got the original Witcher on a whim and it didn't do anything for me.. but went back one day and it finally clicked and I was able to actually enjoy playing it.. once I got in the groove the story and characters just sucked me in and I was a fanboy... Witcher 2 was just such a leap forward in quality it completely consumed me.. and Witcher 3 stands firm in my top 3 games of all time.. it might be first but it depends on the day and my mood.

Not going to lie, I jumped onto the bandwagon after giving the Netflix show a try.

I originally didn't like it, but the show ended up growing on me. It's not amazing or anything, but by the end of season 1 I was totally invested. After finishing season 2 I decided to give the games a go.

I beat The Witcher 2 last week. Game was great. Story was excellent. Not much to say other than I had a blast playing it. Think I spent about 40 hours to beat it?

Decided to pick up The Witcher 3 GOTY edition after beating it and holy shit. I'll get this part of the way: The Witcher 3 is likely the best video game I've ever played.

I say likely because I'm still in the first chapter. I'm about 40 hours in and only just recently got to Novigrad.

This game has, by far, the best side quests I've ever experienced in a game. The fact that they are optional and so easy to overlook is almost criminal. This actually brings me to one of my first criticisms (actually, only real criticism of the game). The side quests are so, so, so good and so rich in story I went out of my way to do every single side quest I found. I made a habit out of not skipping them because I'll pick up a seemingly random, unimportant contract only to run into fucking
Letho
as part of the quest. The problem is, if you do the side quests you'll quickly over level yourself. If you take a break from the side quests to focus on the main story, you'll quickly over level yourself making the side quests only reward 1 xp. This ia fairly minor criticism as I believe you can remedy this by increasing the difficulty which reduces XP reward. I'll definitely be doing this in NG+.

I hear that some people aren't a fan of the combat system. I don't really get this criticism. It's definitely a noticeable improvement from The Witcher 2 and I find it very enjoyable. There are so many different sorts of monsters each with unique attacks. The combat feels responsive and makes each battle feel engaging. I like that you can choose how much you want to invest in signs/magic and have a viable build either way.

The level of detail in the open world is astounding. I gave up on AC: Valhalla like 40 hours into it. Despite finding the world beautiful, it just left me with no real compelling reason to explore it. After a while it just became a bore. I'm only 40 hours in but am having an amazing time exploring the world. If something looks cool, odds are you will have a highly rewarding experience if you simply go explore it. Whether it be a hidden treasure or trigger some side quest.

Dialogue is amazing, story is amazing although I will say the side quests hugely help here and provide more than a enough filler where the main story may be lacking.

I actually enjoyed Cyberpunk. It was my first CD Projekt Red game and I didn't get why people set their expectations so high. I get it now. While I find Cyberpunk enjoyable. it's not even in the same universe as The Witcher 3.

My only dilemma now is whether to continue to take my time as I've been doing or beat it a little faster than I originally planned so I can replay it on NG+.

If this game does eventually get a significant next gen upgrade, then just wow. The game looks stunning already tbh.

Sorry if I seem to be rambling. The Witcher 2 was like $3 and The Witcher 3 GOTY was like $9 when I bought them a couple weeks ago on the XSX. Definitely the best money I've ever spent on a game ever.

This is likely the best game I've ever played in my entire life. I actually took a break from it and didn't play yesterday because I don't want the experience to ever end. Can't remember last time I felt this way playing a game.

Ever since the game came out on Switch, I thought about getting it at least 10 times, only to decide against it at the last minute, because I'd read some comment or other pointing out the game was too complicated, or something like that.

But after reading your post I went out and bought it. I've got the cartdridge right here in my hand. So it's a big responsibility for you, Internet stranger.

to those of you who are thinking of picking it up and starting a playthrough:

I know this might sound kind of silly, but I do think that the TV show (along with Witcher 2) allows for a much enjoyable experience.

this might be a controversial opinion (or maybe not?) but I would recommend watching the show either before playing the game or during your playthrough.

I know the books would be even better, but the show is a lot less of a commitment.

the game is super, super, super heavy when it comes to lore/story. I take my time with these sort of games and I think I would still be hella confused about the different Kingdoms/the north/the Nilfgaardian Empire/the role sorceresses play in the world/what it means exactly to be a Witcher had I not watched the show.

this might not be necessary if you really take your time to read all the lore (and I mean go through the extremely detailed glossary which has tons of info about characters and shit), which I admittedly haven't done all that much, but I really think the show has allowed me to enjoy the game more. at the very least I get way more excited when I see a familiar face on the screen like Tris, Yen, Dandelion, etc.

the show definitely doesn't fill you in on everything you need to know about the world, but I found it to be a pretty neat way to ease yourself into the lore

I was originally going to hold off on watching the show until I played the games. glad I didn't

Witcher 3 is what made me order the books tho, and I can't wait to read them

YMMV

edit: I also watched a summary of Witcher 1 on youtube before playing Witcher 2 which helped a ton. I didn't plan on playing the Witcher 1 so yeah, it made sense. if you truly have no intention of every playing Witcher 2, I would recommend watching a summary of the first 2 games on youtube. obviously I would recommend at least playing Witcher 2 first, but I know that isn't feasible for everyone. also a lot of the complaints against Witcher 3 in this thread are way worse in Witcher 2. The game can be absolutely brutal. It does a horrible job explaining the mechanics to you and the beginning of the game can be difficult as fuck.

As time goes on I really believe Witcher 3 is the goat. I put 200 hours into that game, it's a masterpiece. The writing and dialogue is so good. It takes a lot to shock me nowadays but the real everyday themes of that bloody barren questline will likely never be surpassed for me. I played it on pc max settings on a sli 780ti rig at 1080 60fps. I never played the dlc I wanna play it through again on my 2080ti but a part of me doesn't want to ruin the perfect experience I had with that game. Though it does drag on towards the end I suppose.

the main issue of the combat not on the system/mechanic. but the responsiveness(it is actually lacking especially with the spinning strong attack), problem with hit weight and hit box. not count of Geralt running animation is feel weightless.

when it launch the combat has issue where Geralt automatically enter battle stance, which is affected his movement speed. its like player doesnt has the agency over this aspect. but it already been patched for quite long time ago so not a problem anymore.

other complaint is, the combat is like designed to fight on flat wide area not on narrow or smaller space. i often had Geralt stuck to rock, fences etc.

not sure if it's because my build specializes in fast attacks (I'm doing fast attacks with max crit damage), but I haven't had any issues

I do think, to some extent, fighting in tight spaces is supposed to be a pain. reason I'm saying this is because during Witcher 2 it recommends you actually parry over dodge/roll when fighting in tight spaces.

it can become pretty easy to abuse roll/dodges in fights. tight spaces remove this, so I've found myself having to parry in these situations which is definitely more difficult.

maybe I've just been playing games with REALLY bad combat so this just feels like an improvement. I recently beat BOTW and found the combat in Witcher 3 to be much, much, much more challenging and engaging. in BOTW there are only a few types of mobs, once you get down the doge and parry timing you become literally invincible. master mode doesn't change this. it just makes the mobs essentially do more dmg, take more dmg and self heal (not hating on BOTW, game was one of the best games I played last year, they just definitely need more monster diversity and the combat system is very basic) I've played many of the AC games, most recently Valhalla, and greatly prefer Witcher 3 combat.

as for the run animation, I actually run more than I use my horse and can't say I've noticed anything weird about it? maybe I'll pay more attention when I hop on tonight

edit: if I don't properly prepare for a battle in Witcher 3 and especially Witcher 2, I can get destroyed. I mean some monsters are pretty impossible to beat unless you prepare properly (nightwraiths for example taking zero dmg unless they're in a trap, monsters that can blind you unless you use cat eye potion, some monsters will self heal and not take dmg unless you get their summons/minions first, etc.).

I kind of looked at is as the moral of the story was letting Ciri be Ciri and trusting her and letting her go on her own pretty much from the start. So I never actually hit that bad ending in any of my playthroughs, other than watching it on Youtube.

But yeah I can imagine it being a bit like playing Mass Effect 3 at release with all the previous save data and getting the ‘bad’ Tali ending like I did.😐☹️😭

Well, you see, that thing which you consider a part of you is actually a phantasm. An evil spirit that is gently whispering in your ear 'don't play the DLCs'.

Seriously though, play the DLCs. They're much better than the main campaign, and they all form a whole. If you have to play through the main campaign again, then mod it to feel fresh, there are a ton of great mods that enhance the experience.

Or wait on the upgrade like me, it's gonna be my 3rd replay.

my built is fast attack too and yet for me the responsiveness made me sleepy. overall the combat not that hard too me. stuff i mentioned i can manage but still, sometimes it give me frustration that how the combat could be actually better.

i dont actually bother much about the combat system design, my main gripe is the responsiveness. not asking something like MGSV or DD level of responsiveness, but made it little bit better is enough for me.

the horse...for me the horse is terrible. i end up spend most time running on foot. well maybe thats me but i see lot of similliar sentiment before.

BOTW combat feels like just barebone system too me. compared to Witcher 3 it indeed lacking behind. well maybe i'm too used to play games with great control and responsiveness so it affected my 'standard'. if you have time, can try game like Dragon's Dogma, Souls game or MGSV for example.

I've been meaning to play Dragon's Dogma. While I've heard the combat is great, I've also heard the story is very weak. And I'm huge on story. I'll probably eventually check it out.

The horse sucks, yes. I thought it was just me as I tend to hate horses in all games. I hated using the horse in BoTW too. The horse is fine in Witcher 3 as long as you stick to the roads. Once I leave the roads its a nightmare. As such, I also spend the majority of the game on foot.

idk why games have so much trouble providing a horse that feels good to ride. Character movement is great for me, surprising how terrible horse movement is.
