DF: Rainbow Six Extraction: PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S Tested! A Worthy Tech Upgrade On Rainbow Six Siege?

-The game is powered by ANVIL engine (the same as AC:Valhalla, Ghost Recon or Rainbow Six Siege).

- No motion blur whatsoever.

- it's a cross-gen game (and it shows). One X and Series X look almost identical in some scenes.

- On PS5 and Series X the rez is dynamic 1440p-2160p. Most if the time it's around 1800p.

- Series S is dynamic 936p-1440p.

- PS5 and Series X are a visual match. Series S has some lower quality alpha effects and shadows resolution.

- PS5 and Series X has a "High Frame Rate" mode you can select, not present on Series S. But this mode doesn't mean you get 120Hz, it's still 60 fps and rez drops all the way down to 1080p on both consoles.

- Performance is very good, you get almost locked 60 fps on all three machines. This is the main improvement over last gen versions, which run at 30 fps.

-Series consoles do seem to exhibit some occasional stutter, but it's not a big deal. Maybe it'll be fixed with a patch. PS5 doesn't seem to suffer from those stutters.

Got the summary from other forum because the article is not up.

Summary by chandoog.

TL;DW

- Game has oddly low resolution textures in a lot of places. Likely a cross-gen relic.
- One X and Series X look identical in some places with no visual differences at all.

- PS5 | Series X: Dynamic 4K with lows of 1440p and average of 1800p on both.
- Series S: 1440p max with 936p lowest seen in DF testing.
- Series X and PS5 are a match in terms of visual features.
- Series S has lower quality alpha effects and shadow but otherwise looks the same.

- The game offers a "High Frame Rate" mode on PS5/Series X which drops res to 1080p but renders some visual effects in higher quality.
- This mode does *not* offer 120hz.
- Only offers some lighting and shadow quality upgrades, but not worth it for the huge drop in IQ.
- No motion blur on consoles, upshot is a clearer visual output as TAA also 'breaks' in motion.

- Performance is a close to lock 60 FPS on all 3 consoles in all modes.
- Series S|X have minor 1, 2 FPS stutter at the start of a match which does not happen anywhere else. This is not seen on PS5.
- Last gen consoles run the game at 30 FPS, even One X and Pro.

Thanks for posting this. Will watch right away. The high frame rate mode having the same frame rate as the regular mode is odd

What's with the mod edit?

It's well known that DF articles are posted later than the videos.

lol, already uploaded and the mod complained about this kinda of thread.

I was writing the summary. If the mods close the theads before we have time to watch the video and write the summary I honestly don't know how we can post this kind of content. I mean, I always leave a summary for those who don't want or can't watch the video, but it takes a few minutes to do it. 🤷‍♂️ The mods should understand that.

It's a very strange choice indeed since the resolution mode already runs at almost perfect 60 fps, so the performance mode it's not worth the resolution hit. Very weird decision.

yeah, but it also had to tell the difference immediately between your good thread and the other one. i definitely think there should be some leniency.

This is really a trend. Another game performing better on PS5. Lol at the usual "maybe it'll be fixed with a patch".

You have a dynamic res to maintain performance at 60fps then a performance mode that has the same performance of 60fps? I don't understand the need for it at all.

I still don't understand why this wasn't just an additional mode or something added to Siege..could have been something like it's "Zombies" mode almost..I get it, sell the thing for a premium price but it just doesn't seem like it needed to be a diff/additional game lol

Another game running slightly better on PS5 and having a bit of stuttering on Xbox...

Looks like a clear trend now.

Yes, that's right. I don't get it either, since the Performance Mode also runs at 60 fps and the resolution hit is pretty big (about half the number of pixels being rendered) . I would've understood that decision if the Performance Mode targeted 120 fps, but to my surprise this is not the case.🤷‍♂️

This whole game feels like there's not a need for it at all TBH lol

Glad it's on Game Pass so I can give it a shot without making an additional monetary purchase.

Dynamic resolutions, but near 60 fps costant should give the fps junkies a chubby.

TBH looking at this game, it's not surprising its (dynamic) 4K/60. It looks like a cross-gen ass cross-gen game with low textures etc.

Stutter at level start sounds like a shader compilation issue; should be pre-compiled on Xbox, probably was missed.

I thought there was a thread on here around New years where Richard said no more pixel counting? Maybe I was drunk as fuck.

What's with the blurry textures on Series X, especially on the box on the right and the ground next to it.

A DRS moment maybe ? It's going between 1440p~2160p at any given time.

XSX drops as low as 56 FPS in the video, sure it's a minor thing but the difference isn't always '1-2 FPS'.

Yeah but as Oliver mentioned, it's just at the start and it's only a momentary stutter. Could be a streaming stutter at the loading of a level as there's no drop during the combat sections, which PS5's SSD speed overcomes.

From what I understood the others mode fix the resolution in 1080p and increase shadow and some effects... it is not actually a performance mode at all... the name is weird.

Said that DF thinks that 1080p mode even with better shadow and effects have lower IQ due the drop in resolution and others things.

I'm not sure what they tried to archive here.

If that was the case the stutter should happen once (the first time the shaders needs to be compiled) and not every time you play the game.

BTW shader compilation is not a GPU feature... it is a software (API) feature... in the DirectX case it compiles the HLSL into the intermediate DXIL. It is compiled in real-time on PC when the dev wants an optimized compilation specifically to the GPU the PC is using.

Finally some more fuel for the war!……

another one!

oh there’s nothing interesting but a slight stutter once at the start of the game? these are getting even more boring.

~2160p to fixed 1080p with better shadows and maybe lighting (?) seems like a massive downgrade. I wouldn't choose that mode either.

Unless it is a place holder to add 120hz support in the future.

They wanted a quality mode I guess but with the same framerate that basically didn't work.
It should be:

4k30 = Quality mode with better shadow, lighting, etc
4k60 = Performance mode like it is the normal mode.

Trying to made a Quality mode with better shadow, lightning, etc with the same framerate was set to fail.

Small correction, "Anvil" isn't an all encompassing term, it's like saying gears 1-5 all have "the same" Unreal engine.
This game and valhalla use "Ubisoft Anvil", not to be confused with just "Anvil" (AC2).
Ghost recon (wildlands/breakpoint) and Siege use "Anvilnext 2.0".

Its not, its worse lol. Despite being named "high framerate" it has frame drops while the quality mode doesnt. It does look a lot better imo despite being lower ress because the lighting and shadows are much nicer

Probably, but I don't get why. It's a pretty static camera pan, and if One X can display it, why do that on Series X? Is the DRS just too greedy?

Also, why didn't they pick up on it?

Does the last gen version have a 60fps mode? Might be that the had these options and just made Quality mode 60fps on next gen anyway.

Been playing this on and off all day. It's alright!

Would I have bought it if it wasn't on gamepass? No, but I'm having a good time for now. Just unlocked the 4th chapter and am enjoying the level progression and challenges.
