Phil Spencer: Nintendo and Sony are not going to do anything that damages gaming in the long run.

Flashless at the Golden Globes
Curious bit from the Washington Post interview:
Spencer said he's concerned about tech companies unfamiliar with the gaming industry barging in to the space, as opposed to the current, experienced competition against Nintendo and Sony.

"They have a long history in video games," he said. "Nintendo's not going to do anything that damages gaming in the long run because that's the business they're in. Sony is the same and I trust them. ... Valve's the same way. When we look at the other big tech competitors for Microsoft: Google has search and Chrome, Amazon has shopping, Facebook has social, all these large-scale consumer businesses. ... The discussion we've had internally, where those things are important to those other tech companies for how many consumers they reach, gaming can be that for us.

Reminds me of Jay Leno saying, 'Dont blame Conan.'

I doubt anyone is worried about Sony or Nintendo going out there spending almost a $100 billion buying out Minecraft, Zenimax and Activision at the risk of creating monopolies that might damage the industry in the long run.

Am I the only one who doesn't even get what he's saying?

Well, imagine if Facebook or Amazon were to buy Activision, and ask yourself if they would be better stewards to the industry versus someone like Microsoft.

At the end of the day, I'd rather see Sony, Nintendo, or MS, being the ones making games and absorbing 3rd party companies than say, Tencent, Facebook, Google, etc. Look how Google treats their products ffs.

Sick of him downplaying Nintendo and Sony as competition and pretending he cares about the market and then doing everything he can to squash them as competition.

If Apple, Facebook, google and Amazon get into gaming properly like the big 3 are I think we are in trouble they will absorb who they can and just shut them down when it doesn’t go smoothly as they hoped.

I think we are on the edge of something and it could go bad because of all the consolidation. Who knows.

Why am I supposed to be more afraid of Google, Amazon, Apple or Facebook than I am Microsoft? Microsoft has a lot of experience in shutting down assets that they have purchased. If anything, at this point I hope somebody else starts picking up publishers/developers before it is too late and one company does have a monopoly.

So MS is declaring itself the Vanguard of gaming?

This is what it is. They want to be seen as the lesser of evils so their acquisitions are good for “gamers” while the other companies are just bland tech giants looking to cut gamers off and sell the culture.

The way people put him on a pedestal like gaming Jesus, it seems to be working in their favor. They played their cards right with their “for the gamers” “when everyone games…” marketing.

The joke almost writes itself

But you don't understand! Phil is for gamers!

This guy sure is a cartoon character. Don't know who he thinks he's fooling.
People who swallow 70$ games and 10$ upgrades :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Microsoft Flight Simular was out before Windows. Also MS created DirectX...Google for example created a graveyard :messenger_tears_of_joy:

What would google/facebook do with game publishers though? New forms of data collection, advertisement and monetisation...

Phile is saying like sony use insomnia, ND,ssm etc to make great games Microsoft will do the same with there devs.

I think he's awkwardly saying that he trusts Sony and Nintendo to help preserve some semblance of the business as it exists today, without excessively twisting it into a dystopian NFT disaster.

But what he's really saying is that he doesn't trust that with Amazon, Google, Facebook, Apple, Tencent. He's interested in preserving gaming.

Why not show me all the Developers Sony have bought and then shuttered over the years? let's have a good old list war between the two? Just listing gaming companies I bet they are as bad as each other. Just to confirm, it was a joke and I’m not ingo List wars…..mainly I could never be assed to actually make one. Haha plus they are just shit.

I genuinely dont think you understand that Facebook, Tencent, Embracer, Google, Amazon, Apple will all be looking how they can get a part of this pie due to the boom from Covid. It seems people are so busy looking at console wars when we are clearly in the times of the services war and we are all failing to look at the bigger picture that companies like MS will be concerned about every day.
