I must have been asleep for the past 10+ years, because I don’t remember any SH games that have been released in that time. Oh wait, this is yet another one of those series evolution clickbait videos…

Downpour is definitely better than Homecoming. Homecoming is essentially like the movie. It tried but failed at understanding SH.

Homecoming and Downpour ranked about even for me. Downpour had the better exploration and the awesome monastery level, but Homecoming had boss fights that were honestly TOO good for the game they were in, and the Hell Descent, which is up there with my favorite areas in Silent Hill, like Nowhere, the Historical Society and Brookhaven Hospital.

But I mean, in terms of staying true to the original spirit of the series (disregarding the story, at least) I think Origins is the best post-Team Silent game.

On that I can agree, but the story (and its a prequel and it that sense can influence your enjoyment of SH1) and the fact that you can literally fill your inventory with TV's (like what, I get that its a video game, but that just kills any immersion) left a sour taste in my mouth. It was a decent but very safe game. Impressive to have on the PSP in 2007 though.

Yeah, maybe a limit on inventory would have been more immersive and dare I say it, Survival Horror.

"Oh God, the demons of The Order! Thankfully I have a toaster, a prop katana, and seventeen literal fucking filing cabinets!"

Silent Hill is a very particular beast for me. Too safe, like Origins, and I'm kind of bored. Too experimental like The Room, and I'm kind of upset.

I'm still surprised at how desperate people are for silent hill, it had way more bad games than good.

Has there even been a good silent hill game since the PS2?

There have been good elements in mostly okay to bad games, but not really a runaway hit. PT was the closest, but it had the caveat of being a demo for a canceled game and impossible to play through official means anymore, anyway.

I think it speaks to the quality of SH 1-3 (/4 if you're a masochist) that people have such attachment to the brand despite the numerous missteps.

I thought Shattered Memories was pretty good although it definitely has flaws and isn't really an 'authentic' Silent Hill experience. Using the Wii Mote a a flash light is also very enjoyable.
I also like the rendition of the original Silent Hill story, but I get that not everyone likes the re-interpretation. Gameplay is pretty much a predecessor of games like Outcast. So a lot of walking, running and hiding. There are some cool puzzles, but not all are winners.

I think if they used the original pitch it would've turned out much better:

... but apparently Konami didn't want that.

That’s why I really don’t like it when Japanese games get outsourced to other regions. Imo, it usually leads to average or very underwhelming results with a few exceptions. Admittedly, I thought Downpour and SH5 was pretty good though. Didn’t get to finish Origins, but it seemed solid as well. Never played Shattered Memories.

Downpour's underrated.
Definitively.
