Phil Spencer Interview with Stephen Totilo - Biggest goal is to reach a larger audience for Xbox Game Studios

Spencer to me: "I love the Forza 5 and Halo stats...I love how many people played Psychonauts 2 vs. Psychonauts 1. "So, when I look at the teams, when Todd and I talk about Starfield, it's: 'How do we make sure this is the most-played Todd Howard game ever?'"

(Bear in mind Todd's team made Skyrim) He continued: "As a platform, I think we have a lot to do with that. Quality of the title is number one, no doubt about that...

"But that will be success for me for the individual games: Can we really make these games–can we allow them to reach more players than they've ever seen before? And I say that because I believe in the social impact of interactive entertainment."

Since we were talking in the wake of the Microsoft-buying-Activision announcement, I wondered: Meaning, make Call of Duty and World of Warcraft even more popular? Like, how??

Spencer: "Yeah, I want more people to be playing WoW in five years that are playing today. I want more people to be playing Call of Duty in five years, more people to be playing Candy Crush in five years, because we've made it more accessible to more people."

How can Todd's next game reach more people if you're skipping a key platform? I asked him this.

I asked about whether Microsoft's policies in general could really be as generous as he makes them sound, because there are catches, no?

"Well, that specific question of, 'Hey, there's only one place that I want to play games. And if that game doesn't end up on the one place that I want to play that has its own business requirements for me as a creator…those people can go play those games...

...They're just going to say, I'm choosing not to, because it's not on the one device that has its specific [trails off]. So I get that."

Phil's answer seems really strange, he completely dodges the question. It's a good question, btw. How is CoD and Bethesda going to reach a larger audience without being (potentially) on a huge platform that has significantly larger marketshare than Xbox?

I guess he just will try to outdo the current audience with a blue ocean strategy. A cloud stick has some potential but its never really happened yet. They're positioned for it but its still basically a theoretical market.

Cant think of anything else he meant other than GP on Sony systems or something.

If you can buy a $150 controller and cloud stick and it comes with GP 3 months this Christmas then its literally a stocking stuffer or impulse purchase to play Starfield. Or play on your PC or phone. I guess we'll see.

Because there isn't a good answer, and plenty of people on this board have pointed that out. How can you expand an audience through subtraction? It's dumb on the surface of it, and there isn't anything deeper to be found there, so there you go.

XCloud is not going to herald all these millions of new players playing on mobile either. I know that's the other go to answer for that question, but it's not going to happen for what should be, at this point, incredibly obvious reasons.

The way to expand the audience is to make better games, and make them available on the most relevant platforms that people are actually on. It's really, really simple. They are trying to do everything but that, it seems. Can't wait to see it all play out really.

I think you're totally right in the way that they see it. Problem is, I think that ocean has already been explored and is too salty for life to exist. Stadia is done. PS Now is not a big success. We had OnLive. XCloud is out now. Where are these consumers clamoring for this setup? XCloud is "ok" when it's working perfectly but when it's not, it sucks, and it sucks bad. That whole reliance on quality networking is just never going to go away. And then you factor in the terrible experience of playing on mobile via touch. Ok so buy a controller ... so now they want you to buy a controller and attach it to your mobile phone so you can actually play? That's how they expand their audience beyond people who are willing to buy PlayStation or Switch? I mean ... is that what they are seriously thinking? Not even the most diehard Xbox-only fan could possibly think the potential market for engaging with GP this way is bigger than the audience of people already playing PS or Switch?

Yeah but for the type of game Starfield is, a big AAA RPG with focus on graphics and production, the market simply isn't there for this on streaming or mobile.

So you're basically left with Xbox + PC - Playstation = much smaller audience to reach than what they had before. You could also lump Switch in with this since Skyrim did eventually come to it.

So it's a practical impossibility for Todd Howard's next game to reach the biggest audience ever if he's gatekeeping it off 35-50% of the market.

None of these games are going to last gen consoles so why keep repeating this useless stat.
And the answer is to make sure to have the highest marketshare this gen.

If the goal is to increase Xbox marketshare, then that should be his answer.

But it's not.

He wants Todd Howard's next game to reach greater numbers of users than any of his previous titles. Subtracting Playstation from that mix is an almost impossible hurdle to overcome.

PC is the biggest market for Todd Howard games. Then you consider there are 25 million GP subs who may or may not have played it otherwise. I don't think it's unreasonable.

How much larger is the PS5 market share over Xbox particularly in North America where the Xbox has its biggest audience? Also people who absolutely refuse to play Xbox games on PC, console or streaming can't be more significant than the three aforementioned platforms.

It is not his responsibility to bring content to PlayStation but he is ensuring that multiple other platforms have access. This is far more than other platforms have traditionally provided their games. He even has put some titles on PlayStation which again is more than other platform holders have done. No other ecosystem is doing what Xbox is doing.

Cloud is still in its infancy.
In 5-10 yrs when most TVs have a gamepass and other game streaming apps as standard, you will get people trying stuff out just out curiosity, when theres nothing they want to watch on netflix. They may see hellblade 2 and think it looks interesting and try it out, a 40yr female lawyer who has not touched a videogame in 30yrs may realise that videogame can actually give a richer narritive experience then the tv shows she watches and $10-15/month would probably be acceptable.

Cloud will put high quality videogames at a scale never seen before, an installbase of billions.

Also, Phil and Microsoft dont care about playstations installbase. With XBOX,PC + Cloud they will have an installbase of billions. Playstation want to be the gate keepers too, they want there subscription services there ecosystem. While Phil may not like people who buy playstation cant play Xbox games, but that does not change there fact they are both competitors

Game pass is going to make AAA games more accessible than ever. I mean $70 a pop is ridiculous. Just 3 games a year is what? $210 before including taxes. I understand development cost go up but by adding $10 next gen tax makes me want to find a new hobby. Thanking for game pass though. I wish Spartacus includes day one aaa but they don’t think is sustainable.

Holy cow man ... how can you say this stuff?

Yeah, I will agree that no other ecosystems is doing what Xbox is doing ... hoovering up long standing 3rd parties and removing series from platforms that have enjoyed those games for potentially decades. What is the altruistic spin you're trying to put on this? The PS5 is at least a 50% bigger install base so far than the Series consoles right? If manufacturing gets better, it will likely only further separate itself. The PS5 install base will get to 100+ million almost surely. The Switch install base is over 100 million. It's cool to just cut all those people out? I mean, it doesn't matter to ME because, for example, I bought Skyrim on Xbox, PS AND the Switch, just because. But for people that only have one or the other ... Phil is talking out of both sides of his mouth and you're slurping it up. Seriously man, instead of parroting "everything Xbox, goooood" use your brain and think.

Cloud is still in its infancy.

There aren’t more PlayStations than PC + Xbox’s. The numbers dwarf PlayStation consoles alone. Add the value of Gamepass and these titles are more accessible than they’ve ever been. This isn’t exactly rocket science.

Just how is Playstation an audience for Xbox? He wants the largest audience for XBOX. What that means is growing their marketshare via exclusives plus adding in other avenues to play those games (PC and Cloud). Btw RPGs are perfect for streaming platforms due to the slower gameplay and focus on story hence the huge Western RPG focus. COD has a mobile version. Warzone will span all platforms so they'll still get Playstation money in some capacity.

Starfield is probably the test.
Its going to be interesting to see how its sales compares to fallout 4's.

I dont think it will be much less. Most Bethesda PlayStation fans will either play on PC or get an Xbox. Hardcore PlayStations who want to play starfield but refuse to game anywhere apart from playstation is probably less then 1000.

Wake me up when Starfield is on PS5, I think I'll have time for a long nap (probably forever, I'll setup a backup alarm). With Cloud in the mix to open the game to users beyond those with systems capable of running the title locally, statements like have the biggest reach...yadayada are already covered. Especially with a Bethesda title, they have been working on streaming specific engine optimizations for quite some time.

@ Sosokrates Sosokrates I completely agree. Players that want to play the game will have several options available. Those that boycott out of some weird type of brand loyalty are not going to be that prevalent. Same for Xbox gamers that want to play Sony titles, that's why we have PS4s. LOL

It would be hilarious if MS were to remove these games from Playstation and they become used to bes.

I bet theres a bunch of developers making competing video games to COD, well knowing Playstation isnt going to advertise and push COD anymore.

I do expect Blizzard properties to grow tho.

When Cloud gets there, EA, Ubisoft and others will have their own app using GoogleStream.

They won't need GamePass and Azure. They will go directly to their customers (like Disney, HBO etc).

Right now they are happy getting those checks from MS but they have the most to lose if MS gets their way. They better wake up fast.

I think they are already awake to the realities of the future. Hence them making such bold moves to make themselves more self-sustaining. You'll always have a lot of third-party though, becase not everyone can afford to run their own cloud setup. But I agree that the largest will give it a go. They might still support multiple outlets, as Ubi already does.

So he wants a larger audience for Xbox! - By buying 3rd party publishers… it’s not that hard to decipher!!!!

And people as usual talk about everything but the topic itself… no wonder the gaming industry does whatever they want…

*Potential* Install base.

And if you actually think about it, its not an easy thing to access!

It seems to me that there's a fallacy at the heart of the whole cloud gaming revolution;
Specifically the idea that "the power of the cloud" will massively increase the number of people interested in the product. To which I'd argue that videogames in all their forms are known to everyone already and so the market isn't likely to increase that much. I do not buy there are countless millions out there who would want to play Starfield just because they can stream it to their phones. People who like that sort of title will already have consoles and PC's. To me it makes as little sense as the idea that someone would sign up to Gamepass so they can play the next Candy Crush on their TV's!

The people who play a lot of Skyrim/Starfield and those who play a lot of Candy Crush are just really different too. I just don't see people losing their shit because they can stream-play Halo on their phones... is the idea; they've never seen such a game before and therefore will rush and buy a GP sub?!?

Sorry, but I don't believe for a second. If you want to play a game like that you'd already have a console or a pc.

You have one right now in your eyes, you keep ignoring it.

Right now, we are facing console shortages, and this is perfect opportunity for cloud streaming to hit the market. Then you have the hardware numbers, which cant satisfy gamers. How many gamers can get hardware devices? We arent in the 1990s any more. People want to play video games, and if you cant make alot of hardware fast, you will miss out those users.

Still living in the cloud fantasy with a billion phones etc. Is what is being said here I think. Phil and his constant nonsensical answers…sheesh.

But ms games showing up on PS a year etc. later is also a total possibility. We all know the hardcore needs it day one and will make any jumps necessary. But after the game is no longer a launch darling, time to mop up the rest for some free revenue.

See Sony on PC model.

I don't think they will reach this "goal" but yeah, xcloud can be huge when it comes to smart tvs and the streaming stick launches

Ding ding ding!!!! I wrote this a million times here… MS is reactive they make moves thinking of what the competition will do! Their competition is Facebook, Apple and Google!

We had that Xbox one fiasco back in the day because of Apple rumors of the “Apple TV” …

Google lanches stadia, MS starts betting on xcloud.
Amazon brought some small studios… MS goes buying studios…
Most of us tend to see MS as Xbox but their more than that…

His answer doesn’t make any sense to me. Is he saying this because he can’t really comment considering the deal is under review with the FTC/DOJ?
No, they'll be the third in gaming market, in consoles and even in a lower position on PC and mobile. They don't even have a 15% of market share so won't have any issues with regulators. In fact they would have less problems if they say to the regulators that they plan to make all Zenimax and ABK exclusive if that would be the case, because it would mean to keep like half of the AAA games on the table, so their market share would become smaller than the current MS+Zenimax+ABK combined, which would mean even less monopoly concerns.

In his polished PR vocabulary he's saying: "we're a corporation, we only care about money so we want to get revenue from any place possible with gamepass or by selling games in all platforms. Doesn't mattter if Xbox, PC, PS, Switch or a toaster. We want the money of the biggest amount possible of AAA friendly players, and the biggest chunk of players are on PS, so we'll put our games there. But I don't want to say it clearly now because I may sell some extra Xboxes and GPs to people now that think that these games will be exclusive in the future. If I say clearly now that they will be multi then they may a PS5 instead.

For game sales, PlayStation is typically known for selling the best.
Eg.

Yes, it's basically the same for almost every AAA publisher or game that reveals their platform split. Excludding a few PC focused companies like CD Project, PS typically is the platform where multiplatform AAA games make more money. I remember now the example of Fortnite, that Epic shared their platform split and PS4 was also their main platform, generating half of Fornite's revenue:

When Cloud gets there, EA, Ubisoft and others will have their own app using GoogleStream.

They won't need GamePass and Azure. They will go directly to their customers (like Disney, HBO etc).

Right now they are happy getting those checks from MS but they have the most to lose if MS gets their way. They better wake up fast.
Some like Ubisoft already are using Amazon Luna/AWS. Seems like Bungie will use Stadia/Google to put their games on Switch.

Just how is Playstation an audience for Xbox? He wants the largest audience for XBOX.
No, he wants more audience for the games, not for Xbox. Years ago they started to go multiplatform, they are now targeting PC, mobile, all consoles and game subscriptions instead of only Xbox. And Sony is starting to do the same too.
