PS5’s SSD is a Technical Gem, Fast Loading Broke Martha is Dead Levels During Development

Bonanni said, “We are all amazed by the performance of the PS5 SSD, which in itself is a technical gem. However, the element that really makes the difference here is the PS5’s data reading and writing system, which is extremely efficient. Even on some occasions we have found the fact that PS5 loads some scenes too quickly compared to other consoles and PCs, literally broke the loading of the levels because it was totally unexpected, so we had to get our hands on the code to counterbalance this excessive loading speed.”

As I was reading up on the controversy surrounding the game, I came across this interesting article. I remember a similar article where Mark Cerny mentioned how the GPU speed broke the code of a AAA PS4 game in BC mode.

I thought the "NEXT TO NO LOAD TIMEZ," shit was just promo fluff, but having spent a couple of months with my PS5, I can really say the snappiness of the console is a literal game changer. I was never one to mind loading times unless they were *absurd*, but playing FFXII right now, a title that I have a good bit of experience with starting with it's PS2 release, and hitting a zone line only to be essentially immediately met with the next zone is fucking legit.

Broke as in removed content?

That’s one way to spin it

Talk is cheap.

The PS5 SSD is nice and performs well but we still have not seen it show any worthwhile advantages over a slower NVMe system.

But of course we are early in the gen, but based on the GPU caperbilities of the systems I dont thinks its going to be anything major and SSD wont help lighting, particle, fluid simulations and other GPU +CPU intensive visual components.

We’re already getting 1080p/30 fps modes in cross gen games lol

It loaded so fast because of all the censored content cut out. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

In dying light 2.

When developers target current gen, and have there engine well optimised for them I dont think we will be seeing 1080p/30fps, apart from on the S.

Its anoying cerny did not give more information and examples of how a 5.5gb/s ssd would benifit over a 1gb/s or a 2gb/s ssd, which leads me to believe its a lot of marketing talk.

What more do you want? Faster load speeds, faster streaming - that's it. There's nothing more to it, but you can put a lot of particles into faster streaming, lol.
I just said, a visual example beyond a metel gear radar and cerny saying 4gb per half second seems about right for next gen.

Every dev who's been asked about the PS5 infrastructure praises it - and it's not just the SSD, but the whole I/O set in place for future games. The only reason we haven't seen more like Rift Apart is only because we're still in a cross-gen phase of the new generation.

Yes. But we still dont know what the "super fast" element of it brings.

Basically why 5.5gb/ and not less.

Because they didnt show any tech demos demonstrating its superiority we are just left not knowing.

It seems you are arguing with one of the people who troll PlayStation that I have blocked.
If I were you I wouldn't bother with them.

It's by far the best feature of the next gen consoles. It's actually one of the main reasons I'm looking forward to GTA V re release even though I know I'm in the minority. Those load times are brutal

“We censored the game, but we’ll make this statement that makes it sound like we don’t know how to develop games, but try and make it sound like praise for the system to make the ps5 owners happy.”

This is typical PR nonsense, try and soften a blow with a “feel good“ counter story.

Really?

And how many casual PS5 owners you think will read this article, let alone give a shit about the game?

C’mon… :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Faster storage means faster load times and faster streaming, but it all depends on the compression tools in place (Kraken for PS5). If the files can be compressed/uncompressed on-the-fly without tearing on the CPU, it leaves more headroom to do the "important" stuff. Probably why we see the fastest console (Xbox Series X) on the market (Teraflops-wise) go head to head in all comparisons with the PS5.

Im talking about cerny saying thanks to the superfast ssd you could turn around and 4gb of assets would stream directly from the SSD.
We dont know what the benifit of 4gb vs 2gb is yet in this scenario. A tech demo comparing these two would of been useful.

Yes we do. If a game needs 4GB/s stream from SSD to APU, you need raw power or compression techniques. That's it. You'll have a hard time doing it without raw power. Looking forward to see how Microsoft will manage to do it with Direct Storage.

We dont know what it looks like.

Sure people can speculate what 4gb vs 2gb would look like.
But a tech demo would at least provide something beyond speculation.
