Are Sega ashamed of their Saturn legacy?

I dont know tbh. Nothing to be ashamed of though. Yes it lacked the amazing 3D titles of the generation like MGS, Mario 64, Resident Evil 2,Zelda OOT, Gran Turismo etc, the Saturn was still an amazing console. The better versions of the 2D fighting too

Saturn had some of the best JRPG’s, behind PS1 & Snes. Grandia. Suikoden, Shining Force 3 parts 1, 2 & 3, Panzer Dragoon , Dragon Force, Luna 2, Albert Odessey. Saturn also had the best 2D fighters and Shoot em ups of the generation. Street fighter series, Marvel cross overs, KOF, Mortal Kombat etc

Plus classics like Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Guardian Heroes, Radiant Silver Gun, Die Hard Aracde, Elevator action, Resident Evil, Saturn Bomberman etc

Id love a virtual console esc store with Megadrive/Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast games

well it also was just really badly made... which didn't help... an all-star Sega games loaded Saturn classic would sell more IMO if it actually has a good emulator

Actually, let's make this a sort of challenge. Sega Saturn Classic Mini, but you''re not allowed to use any Sega Model 2 arcade ports (Because these will always be better in a Yakuza game), Japan-only releases (unless they eventually got a western release post-Saturn, if only because that let's me add one game that wouldn't otherwise), licensed games, or retro rerelease compilations. Here's what I can think of:

1) Bug!/Too
2) Mr. Bones
3) Dragon Force
4) Three Dirty Dwarves
5) Dark Savior
6) Legend of Oasis
7) Guardian Heroes
8) Fighters Megamix
9) Daytona USA Circuit Edition (Technically cheating but we're nearly at 10 and I'm already drawing blanks.)
10) Sonic R
11) Panzer Dragoon/Zwei
12) Panzer Dragoon Saga
13) Shining The Holy Ark
14) Shining Wisdom
15) Radiant Silvergun
16) Virtua FIghter Remix
17) Stellar Assault SS
18) NiGHTs into Dreams
19) Burning Rangers
20) Astel
21) ...?

Anyway, as to the thread question; Sega Saturn emulation is difficult and most of Sega's work on that was ports of arcade titles that they already rerelease in other forms. They aren't ignoring the Saturn as you can see with the Panzer Dragoon remakes, but they're not going to be able to milk it in any close to how they milk the Genesis/Megadrive's legacy.

that is a weird limitation... the PS1 classic also had games on it that had way better versions available, including arcade versions
The PS1 Classic had a version of Tekken 3 that was arguably inferior the actual version of Tekken 3 released on retail Playstations, so that's not exactly a good thing to bring up.

The reason that exclusion is even there is because Sega is not going to release a Saturn Classic Mini with the exact same library as a Sega Astro City Model II Classic Mini.

the version on the PS Classic was a Pal version that ran at 50fps and then upsampled to 60hz with stutters and latency :) so nah, that version was shit no matter what lol

still I would put arcade ports on there as that is what such a device is about, it's about nostalgia not about playing the best versions of games

The saturn port of resident evil has the exclusive tick enemy, so its the superior version!

Saturn has one of the best games ever made: Guardian Heroes. And a lot of great games from sega itself, i love all my Sega consoles!

Some great hidden Gems also, like Groove on Fight, Rabbit, Sonic Council, Crows...etc

(Yes i know the GH remake on Xbox 360, its just perfect).

Hopefully SEGA give me a Saturn mini with:

- Sega Rally
- Daytona USA
- Virtua Fighter 2
- NiGHTS
- Panzer Dragoon Zwei
- Shining Force 3
- Tomb Raider
- Street Fighter Alpha 2 (pref 3 but didn't release outside Japan)
- Quake
- Duke Nukem 3D
- Exhumed/Powerslave
- Panzer Dragoon Saga
- Die Hard Arcade
- Sonic R
There are so many other games to put on there that are not really available anywhere else. Most of the games you listed are available. VF2, Daytona, Nights, SF3, Tomb Raider, Quake, Duke Nukem, Powerslave (just released).

The Panzer games would be good, along with Burning Rangers, Shining Force 3, Albert Odyssey, Dark Savior, Mr. Bones, Saturn Bomberman, Dragonforce, Enemy Zero, Policenauts, Guardian Heroes......etc.....ones that aren't readily available.

Saturn was junk unless you loved Sega and Capcom arcade games and some niche Japanese games.

Their awesome sports games during Genesis (EA and Sega Sports) were awful on Saturn. That hit Sega's image hard as their sports lineup was a key genre that defined Genesis in terms of quality and tv ads.

PS games were overall much better, had better 3D and important for many people the system was even cheaper to boot.

I've been thinking lately of Sega and the Saturn. Why is it, that Sega is never releasing a Saturn collection for current platforms? When it comes to Genesis/ Mega Drive, they are releasing collections left and right to all sorts of systems. However, the Saturn is left in the dust. I know Genesis was much more popular, and Saturn deemed a flop, but why are Sega neglecting such a big part of their history? Imagine Nintendo never re-relasing anything beyond their 16-bit efforts.

Despite its shortcomings, I loved the Saturn. It had a good library of games that were unique and fun, and it set themselves apart from Playstation. I would love to see a Saturn collection with all the classics that Sega released for the system.

Virtua Fighter 2, Dark Savior, Burning Rangers, Nights, Sonic R, Sega Rally, Legend of Oasis, Clockwork Knight and its sequel, Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2, Shining the Holy Ark, Last Bronx.

There are a lot of good games here, trapped on a mostly forgotten system. It's a shame Sega isn't updating them to current standard and is releasing a collection of old Saturn classics. I think a collection like that would sell quite well.
Drives me nuts when ppl use "are" instead of is when it comes to the name of a company. Example: "Are sony going to release a game pass competitor?". See ...sounds ridiculous, right? I mean...we are talking about ONE company here, right? It's not a plural. Sure there are multiple ppl that work for the company but it's the individual company we are talking about. You wouldn't say, "Canada are the greatest country in the world". Of course not.

Plus, you actually use are and is interchangeably in your post. Pick a lane...the correct lane. Please join me in shaming all who try to sound interesting or "smart" by using "are" instead of "is".

With the exception Radiant Silvergun & 2D fighters, I just don't see any Saturn games that weren't done better on other systems of the day.

English is not my first language.

English is not my first language.
Ahhh. Sorry! It's not just you, it's a new trend I've noticed on many game websites. Im not trying to be that jerk making fun of someone who speaks more languages than me! You're good. It's a thing that native English speakers have started doing though and it drives me nuts because they should know better and it ends up making our already confusing language even more complicated to learn and I won't stand for it! Haha.

Why would you care about a forum user's spelling and grammar on a fourm?

You forgot to put an apostrophe yourself in the word "I'm".

Japan-only releases (unless they eventually got a western release post-Saturn, if only because that let's me add one game that wouldn't otherwise)
Seems like an unnecessary restriction when they didn't care to release an english version of the astro city mini themselves and relied on Limited Run Games for the US release

because the PlayStation Classic was a commercial failure
It was almost the worst possible version of a PlayStation classic that could be made... It's sad, but I'm happy that it did not succeed the way it was made... It's only good as a raspberry Pi case that you can use as a proper emulation box.

I wish they would embrace their Model 2 and 3 games more, many are still unported to home systems.
Instead we just keep getting repacked MegaDrive games
I would legit pay $60 each for a model 2 fighter collection and a model 2 racer collection. (X2 more for model3 as well)

the Saturn didn't catch the zeitgeist, but it houses a great and rich library of games, many of them still exclusive to the platform.

Yes, really. It says it right there where you quoted me. My complaint is with people who ppl who purposely use "are" in order to "try to sound interesting or smart". Is that you? If it is then yes, I stand by my criticism of your decision to purposely speak. If you're purposely going with that new grammatically incorrect trend just to go with the crowd and appear "hip" then I say to you, Boo! Hiss! Shame! BOOOOO!

If you just made and honest mistake then I have zero criticism and once again I apologize for being presumptuous. But again to those of you purposely using "are" instead of "is" be warned, I will be commenting to annoy you! This isn't over!

Sega Saturn is hard to emulate and port things from. In quite a few cases they lost the source code in some others they would need to rework the games extensively.

That said, in some cases they did as Sega Ages did port quite a few games a decade ago.

Virtua Fighter 2
Nights Into Dreams
Dragon Force
Fighting Vipers
Last Bronx
Panzer Dragoon 1

Probably not enough for a collection.

Most international people who bought an Astro City Mini imported the Japanese version anyway. As is what would happen with a Sega Saturn Mini, even if it didn't have Japanese-exclusive entries.

Big Saturn fan, but it didn't really have that many breakthrough hits. It's biggest claim to fame in Japan were Model 2 ports.Though I do prefer Sega Rally & VF2 on Saturn for their extra content.

NiGHTS, probably the most famous Saturn original game, has modern port. Sonic R, attached to Sega's biggest IP, did reappear. Sakura Wars was another notable Saturn release, and has gotten rereleases.

Saturn was awesome if you were into imports. I was huge into fighting games and shumps, and it delivered big time. They should be ashamed of Sega CD or the 32X. I remember feeling so burned as a kid when I got a Sega CD. Yeah had a few good games, but it was definitely a bigger disappointment to me than the Saturn.

Oh, Shining Force 3.

I guess Grandia and SM would work but the precedent of the PC-Engine Mini suggests that even if a game has an English version, if the platform had a Japan-only release, it's gonna be raw Japanese.

And I'd hate to have only 1/3rd of a game, so no Shining Force III unless somehow all the scenarios are present.

Id add Shining Force 3, my favourite game of all time.

I know what you mean but why not have some Arcade amd 3rd party games? Plus Japanese only games translated?
Considering some of Nes, Megadrive, Snes and Playstation Mini had some Japan only and 3rd party titles, why not add some of those in the mix. Snes mini even had an unreleased game.

For my dream Saturn Mini, Id have the list you mentioned and Plus:

Shining. Force 3, parts 1, 2 & 3
Dragon Force 2
Die Hard Arcade
Elevator Action Returns
Dodon Pachi
Saturn Bomberman
Grandia
Albert Odessy or another Japan only JRPG like Sakura Taisen etc

Batsugun
Virtua Fighter 2
Sega Rally
Last Bronx
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Xmen vs Street Fighter
Marvel vs Street Fighter
KOF 97 + 98
Steep Slope Sliders

Baku Baku Animal
CastleVania Symphony of the Night
Another shoot em up - Soukyugurentai or Battle Garegga or Layer Section etc Even Salamander

Since we're making lists, i gotta say my dream Saturn Mini would be:

Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari (a masterpiece of a hidden gem amongst an ocean of hidden gems, showcasing the absolute best 2D graphics the Sega Saturn is capable of)
Panzer Dragoon Zwei
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Dragon Force
Shinning Force III (Scenario 1, 2 and 3)
Layer Section (Galactic Attack in US)
Darius Gaiden
Street Fighter Zero 3 (definitive version of the home console port with a large amount of single-player content and Saturn exclusive enhancements, any other version in any collection is the arcade port missing all this content)
Keiou Yuugekitai - Katsugeki-hen (Keio Flying Squadron 2, also released in PAL regions but plays slower and that's not good)
Nights into Dreams (simply iconic game)
Burning Rangers (as iconic as Nights, completely unique and with a surprisingly decent camera system for an early 3D third person action game)
Cotton 2: Magical Night Dreams
Kisuishou Densetsu Astal (Astal, but the import because it's easier than the US release as it was intended purely as a technical 2D showpiece)
Saturn Bomberman
Guardian Heroes
Radiant Silvergun
Samurai Spirits: Amakusa Kourin (Samurai Shodown IV) (gotta represent SNK with a stellar port of the best SS game)
Real Bout Fatal Fury Special (gotta represent SNK with a stellar port of the best FF game)
Bulk Slash
Hyper Duel
Twinkle Star Sprites (definitive version is stuck on the Saturn with loads of exclusive content)
Soukyugurentai
Batsugun
Virtua Fighter 2 (gotta represent Model 2, and it's an excellent port)
Sega Rally Championship (gotta represent Model 2, and it's an excellent port with phenomenally good controls)
X-men vs. Street Fighter or Marvel vs. Street Fighter (they're both fantastic vs. games, but they're different enough to make it a hard choice for one vs. to represent. It's a coin flip)
Policenauts (easy access to the best version of a legendary Kojima adventure game)
Elevator Action Returns (essential co-op game)
Fire Pro Gaiden Blazing Tornado (not a fan of wrestling games at all, but this one is worth it. It's sort of like the Punch-Out! of wrestling games with unique presentation & characters, gorgeous 2D artstyle and fun gameplay)
Magic Knight Rayearth (iconic as being the last US Saturn release, and overall a great 2D role playing game)

01.) NiGHTS into Dreams...

04.) Sonic R
05.) Sonic Jam
06.) Panzer Dragoon

20.) Sakura Wars

The sports games don't have too many licenses so it might be possible, and Sakura Wars has a fan translation so maybe Sega can pay them for it.

And there are some games I yet have to play (after all these years) and that might be pretty good.

If a SEGA Saturn Mini came to exist, arcade ports from SEGA would definitely be there. This would add great ports such as Die Hard Arcade or Last Bronx.
