Epic Games has acquired.. Bandcamp

I’m excited to announce that Bandcamp is joining Epic Games, who you may know as the makers of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, and champions for a fair and open Internet.

Bandcamp will keep operating as a standalone marketplace and music community, and I will continue to lead our team. The products and services you depend on aren’t going anywhere, we’ll continue to build Bandcamp around our artists-first revenue model (where artists net an average of 82% of every sale), you’ll still have the same control over how you offer your music, Bandcamp Fridays will continue as planned, and the Daily will keep highlighting the diverse, amazing music on the site. However, behind the scenes we’re working with Epic to expand internationally and push development forward across Bandcamp, from basics like our album pages, mobile apps, merch tools, payment system, and search and discovery features, to newer initiatives like our vinyl pressing and live streaming services.

I’m gonna need some receipts….. Because Epic seems to only care about a fair and open internet when it has the potential to make them more money.

> expand internationally

Welp, there goes that diversity and selection once the censorship and bending the knee too shitty governments kicks in.

> push development forward across Bandcamp

This is a joke, right? Bandcamp has a more functional and feature filled website than the Epic store, and it has been that way ever since I’ve been aware of Bandcamp. Like do they not realize how slow Epic has been updating their store?

> where artists net an average of 82% of every sale

Heh, not for long...

Very weird to see them gobble up Harmonix and then Bandcamp.

A few years ago I would've said the two of them being under the same roof could only lead to great things, but these days I'm not so sure what the fate of either will truly be.

Okay I'm reeling from this news. I fucking hate it as an artist that uses Bandcamp to put my music out, and as an actual user.

That's extremely weird. Seems completely unrelated to their business. Unless they're somehow gonna use it as a way to provide soundtracks for games made in UE.

And now music is once again corporate.

Again, again, again, again.

Here's hoping there's some scrappy startup that we (musicians and listeners) can flock to.

Hate that I can't escape this bullshit.

This was 100% done to help their lawsuits against apple and google, without doubt. “See look how much we care about only taking small cuts, we’re the good guys!”

“Champions for a fair and open internet” 🤣

People don't understand how Epic works, what else is new.

What's complicated about a company becoming a puppet for a Chinese monopoly scheme and TOTES not using user data for nefarious purposes or to get their names and business in as many Western properties as possible? Also something something Cliff B lol. If ignorance on the subject means that my phone doesn't record my retinal data with my camera and send it to the Chinese overlords, then consider me a blissful dumb bastard.

The metaverse angle here is clear: Epic wants to be the omnichannel, omniformat ecosystem for content creation and distribution tools that can monetize individual virtual digital creative assets. They already have the Unreal Marketplace for 3D props and 2D/3D animation. Now they have audio.

Next up: some kind of 2D art distribution and monetization community platform, prolly. Like a Deviantart.

Smart move from a purely on paper standpoint. Likely going to for the short term erode the membership of Bandcamp in its current form.

Hold onto your panties
I moved no new sales on music last year and started giving them albums away for free that I've uploaded. I'm not sure Epic buying is going to boost any of artist sales either way. Seems like Band camp was already under some pretty awful financial management.

Oh jesus, you are so loaded with propaganda bullshit, and spew it everywhere, while already knee deep in it.
