Buriki One; the best fighting game nobody ever got the chance to play...and other awesome games that were overlooked

I love 3D fighting games and obviously I love rare games and oddball hardware...so it's a given I would absolutely love Buriki One. But sadly I think MOST people would love this game...and will never really get the chance to play it due to its rarity / obscurity and the fact it does not emulate well at all.

What SNK did with the fighting game formula and Buriki One is stupid simple yet amazingly effective. Every fighting game before and after it...arcade stick moves the character and the buttons attack

Buriki One? Buttons move the characters and the arcade stick attacks! Yes it sounds like it makes no sense...but once you actually get it in your hand (heh heh) and try it...suddenly you 100% see just what SNK was doing and damn does it click. The movement of the arcade stick directly correlates to the attack you load up which translates to a sense of impact when your strike hits that is unlike anything else I've ever experienced in a fighting game. Its genius and incredibly simple all at the same time!

and then SNK never used the concept again. 100% "one and done"

So Buriki One...IMO one of the best and most innovative 3D fighting games of the 90s basically faded away like a fart in the wind.

Which got me thinking. A) has anyone on Gaf ever gotten to play it and B) what are other amazing games that faded 100% into obscurity. Games locked behind hardware walls that don't emulate well OR just games that are amazing and unknown.

Stuff like Thrill Drive from Konami (hardware locked) or just epic and obscure (L.O.L on Dreamcast)

The most innovative fighting game since Karate Champ, and the last.

This game and Beast Busters 2nd are the only HNG64 games I never had the chance to play.

Never played this one but would have loved to play it on the original arcade cab. Also I think the artwork is pretty dope.

Made by the geniuses at Treasure. This is a preview of Guardian Heroes for the Sega Saturn - as the engine pretty much feels the same.

Four player simultaneous fighting game on a two plane system.

If you're a fan of the IP - that's a huge plus - as it has a selection of the characters from the anime. Plus, despite the hardware limitations, the sound effects are pretty good - and the soundtrack is excellent.

Love this game - probably won't be ever EVER remade or re-released due to the IP - but you could always dream.

You unlocked a memory. A very, very blurry memory.
When I was a kid I used to go to an arcade (rumored to be the biggest in Europe, apparently - I don't think that was true) and one day a HUGE cabinet with this 1v1 fighting game (which was basically 90% of what I played) with weird controls appeared... maybe it had two sticks? Anyway, it costed two tokens (quite expensive at the time) and it was really hard to play, so I didn't play it much at all. It had various martial arts, like a rapresentative for every major one, it was really realistic and I don't remember a boxing ring stage. Anyway, it didn't last long in there - too weird and too expensive.

I thought it could be Buriki One, but either I am misremembering or the year doesn't add up. :pie_thinking: I think it was beginning of the 90s.

Edit: After watching some videos on Youtube, I think it was the one. Strange, I didn't think I ever went in that arcade after the first half of the 90s.

Interesting. I can’t think of any 90s 3D arcade fighting game that works like Buriki...that isn’t Buriki

That sounds really cool, and the feeling you describe reminds me of smash brothers where you can input a direction and button at the same time for an extra powerful attack. Also fight night comes to mind, in the earlier games they had all sorts of punch gestures mapped to the right stick and it felt pretty good. This game sounds like the one that started it all, thanks for sharing!

From the gameplay footage I've seen, mostly from Mikado, the game's characters are asymmetrical. Unlike games like Tekken and Virtua Fighter where the button layout is the same for every character, in Buriki One there are characters like Sokolov, the middleweight freestyle wrestler, who doesn't have punch attacks, he only has low kicks meant to set up his grappling game consisting in holds, takedowns, throws and submissions.

The character roster sounds boring though, to me Tekken has always been by far the fighting game franchise with the best character design and look. (from Tekken 1 to 5 for the most part tho, after 5 they added some butt ugly characters)

When it comes to gameplay Tekken and VF are unmatched (and Soul calibur for the weapon game)

BAnd again when i say Tekken it's excluding the butt ugly 2D and Weird characters they added recently.

So this thread became the fighting games graveyard?
What about Rumble Roses then? that's one fighting game that i don't hear anyone talk about anymore and kinda miss.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.

Weren't the controls for that Bruce Lee beat 'em up like this? And that shooting game where the dev made a thread here on GAF about who wanted to play it and who didn't?

The exact opposite for me.

I detest the plastic, unimaginative character design of Tekken.

I guess it was a false memory. I'm pretty sure it was Buriki. I actually was thinking about this game some days ago - I summoned your video somehow. Thanks for helping me remember what it was!

You're confusing with Dead Or Alive, Tekken has awesome characters except some cases like Eliza recently added

Haven't played this one but I can imagine attacking with the stick works well.

It worked amazing in Fight Night 3 and I think the first EA MMA had it too. But they removed it in the next games because people prefer mashing buttons....
