Hmm maybe I am imagine things, but it appears to have snapped vertical stabilized? Reminds me of that 2001 AA 587 crash

The 6-year-old single-aisle jet is part of the NG, or Next Generation, era that preceded the 737 Max, which was subjected to a global grounding after two deadly crashes. The NG has one of the best safety records among all aircraft, with just 11 fatal accidents out of more than 7,000 planes delivered since 1997, according to aviation consultancy Cirium.

“The 737 NG has been in operation for 25 years and has an excellent safety record,” said Paul Hayes, director of air safety and insurance at Cirium. “I’m not going to speculate on what happened but if the Flightradar24 logs are accurate, something seems to have happened abruptly and the plane nose dived from cruising altitude.”

According to Airsafe.com, which tracks aviation safety, NG models had just 0.07 fatal crashes per million flights as of 2019. That puts it among a rare group that includes the Boeing 747-400 and 737’s main competitor, the Airbus SE A320 family.

Terrible tragedy - hope we can discover the root cause soon. A manufacturer defect seems unlikely in this case.

I can't help but think of how horrible it must have been for these poor people. A near vertical dive for like 3 minutes... jesus christ.

RIP

On the "bright" side, death should have been near instantaneous for most everyone on board, if not for all. The lead-up and wait though...whoa boy!

100% what I thought of when saw it was in a nose dive and people were saying clearly suicide…not at all conclusive until the black box is recovered, which…not sure how likely that is after that impact

Hopefully not insensitive, but I always think of this when I hear about the black box:

The China Eastern jet crash that killed 132 people when the craft slammed into a mountainside appears to have been an intentional act, according to a report Tuesday.

Flight data from the doomed plane suggests someone in the cockpit pushed the Boeing 737-800 into a “near-vertical” descent while cruising at a high altitude in late March, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with US officials’ preliminary assessment.

Data from a black box recovered at the crash site near the city of Wuzhou in the southern province of Guangxi indicated that controls in the cockpit led the plane into its deadly dive, sources told the newspaper.

“The plane did what it was told to do by someone in the cockpit,” one source close to the matter told the Wall Street Journal.

This necrobump initially made me stereotype Chinese people as being terrible at flying airplanes because I swear to God I saw this two months ago. Turns out, I did.

But in all seriousness, a plane hijacking? Or just a guy who had it and wanted to take innocent people with him? This raises more questions than answers.

Suicide by pilot. Voice recorder would have picked something up with a hijacking.

How shit of a human being do you have to be to do that? This is like when people jump off of buildings above busy sidewalks, x 1,000,000. I don't support suicide and I understand depression very well, but if you're hellbent on necking yourself, leave other clear the fuck out of it. Sheesh.

That's suiciders for ya.

It's like a ship capsizing. But instead of the captain getting everyone get into a life jacket and row boat, he just stands there and has everyone go down with the ship with him.

That's why depressed people on the street should understand a lot of people just walk by because we have no fucking idea what you'll do if we help you out or try to prevent you from leaping off a bridge.

Best case scenario is crisis averted. Worst case scenario, the jumper grabs the good samaritan with him.

Like everyone, I know I'll die one day. But no way I'm going to be one of those unlucky dudes in the news knifed, robbed or shot by a depressed weirdo. As dad would tell us at the dinner table as a kid.... stay away from odd people.

Same as that Germanwings crash which was a suicide a few years back if true, I wonder if airlines will ever improve their psych screenings for pilots or if this is acceptable business hazard to them.
unfortunately this will never happen because there is already a shortage of pilots. same goes health care workers; psychos and sociopaths just hop around after getting canned and hospitals are willing to keep hiring them and look the other way to reap the profits. that's why we have people like Dr Death and that Charles Cullen nurse guy who kept killing people while people knew what was going on. there's just no incentive to screen these fucking psychos it's honestly terrifying

It’s things like this why I hate to fly. Also, hope they come up with an Autopiliot that can detect fatal errors of human pilots and correct them by taking over. Of course if the error went the other way around human should be able to have full control in that case. But some type of process or system that can counter balance these scenarios.

Man this sucks. I get uncomfortable and nervous when my plane wobbles a lot during turbulation, can't even imagine how these people felt when it was nosediving down.
Damn!

I hope the families are able to sue the airline into the ground.

But it's China so I will not get my hopes up.

They clearly failed to properly evaluate a pilot which IS an industry standard protocol.

In the USA this case would be settled out of court for high 7 or low 8 digits. You can bet on that.
I dont know exactly how long this pilot worked for them but its not like he got the job yesterday and caused the crash. People live with depression or suicidal thoughts for years without people even knowing it. There are no tests to check your mental wellbeing when applying for an airline besides the most basic ones that unless you are a total psycho, you would admit to by answering a YES to questions like "do you think about killing yourself". Also, the suicide could be because of something traumatic happened in his life recently. You do know that pilots and crew get tested once a year only on general knowledge. Only when getting hired do you go through those 100+ mental evaluation questions. Never again. I know this because I worked for 6 years for Emirates Airlines. Both pilots and cabin crew go through exactly the same tests.

So again it has nothing to do with the airline, the pilot is a fuckup. Good luck to his family memebers with the angry mob when they release his name to the public.

EDIT:

Both pilots had over 6000 flying hours on that Boeing. Thats a mother fucking veteran pilot. How can the airline be at fault because they didnt detect his suicidal tendencies 10 years earlier???

Why couldn’t he take out the poo bear with him or something. Why is it always civilians these people take with them?

That was horrible and probably not an accident.

Anyways, this is one reason I don’t fly. Not just suicidal pilots but I just fear something not being maintained correctly or even fueled up… at least with driving I have my life in my hands to an extent..
Yeah no.

You have 384264823756249 cars with you on the street so your destiny is in the hand of 2843742948249 unknown people that can crush their car into your car for a thousands different reasons.

Flying is ALWAYS WAY WAY WAY SAFER.

That is exactly what an autopilot does anyway already. If humans have full control that means they turn off the AP to take back that control which is exactly what happened here. Once you go into a nosedive or stall, nothing can save you, its just physics.

I hope we never have an airliner that has everything done by a machine and no input from real people. That is exactly the point of pilot training, to be ready when shit hits the fan. Everyone can press "autopilot" button...but once the autopilot cant handle its shit, a real person needs to take over. You would be surprised how much todays aircrafts have measures to counterbalance any issues and still, a human needs to take over because machine calculations are not fullproof. For example, an autopilot can also land an aircraft but no pilots use it for that even though thast is the most crytical phase where most accidents happen (take-off and landing). Because A: they need to practice it all the time and B: no matter what a machine can calculate, it can not "feel" the weight of the plane or the sudden wind gush.

Just because one guy or should I say now 2 guys in the last 10 years commited suicide by flying their plane doesnt mean the whole industry is unsafe. Download Flightradar24 on your phone and see how many aircrafts are above you. Then look on another continent, then imagine this is happening 24/7 for decades. Theres thousands of flights a day. The chance of another pilot suicide is like 1: 100000000000000000000000000000000000000.

You literally have 100 times bigger chance to get run over on a traffic light than for something ever to happen to you in air.

It’s also possible the industry standard protocols were followed and he slipped through, or had some sort of mental break between evaluations, etc…Company which are totally compliant with industry standards still have stuff slip through.

I know we’re commenting on a news article on an Internet forum, but it’s never as cut and dry as anyone thinks.

That is true, but statistically every year more people are killed by cows than sharks, and i would not dare to get near any shark.
