Horizon Forbidden West is not enjoyable as the first due to changes (No story spoilers)

I loved the first one so much! But this one I just can't like. They made horrible changes!

Health: The way health works is awful. You only get two pools of health and it runs out so fast because the enemies and machines take more than half your health in ONE hit! Then you are in the middle of the combat and you have to tell the enemies: WAIT I need to stay still to fill the other pool of health! That's so ridiculous! Why the hell can't I move when I need to fill my health?!! It's so stupid! Why do I only have two pools of 16 berries when I have 500+ in my inventory?!!

The climbing is horrible, and not even comparing it to another game. The game is not even consistent on what you can and can't climb and the functionality is extremely buggy.

Combat: The combat is horrible comparing it to the first one. It's not enjoyable for many reasons, but my main complain is that either is bad or it's cheese-able.

Melee: This is a joke! The first one didn't have a good melee at all, but you could see they didn't design the game at all for it, so it was a moot point. This time, they give you three stupid combos that don't do shit. The combat is useless, but somehow if you get the resonator blast it's cheese-able.

WHY THE HELL I CAN'T USE A SHIELD OR PARRY?! (I haven't finished the game, so I don't know if you get one eventually) but it NEEDS either shield or parry or both!

Enemies/Machines:
- They have a stupid long reach. You could be like 5 miles away from them and still get you.
- The armor it's incredibly stupid when trying to infiltrate because you can't scope them anymore. If you hit them with an arrow to beak them they get alerted. Specially if you use an exploding barrel.
- Machines now have combat designed as Pokemon. Where you just have to match their element and that's it. It's cheese-able because you just span their weakness and win easier. One thing is to have parts that react to certain elements, the other thing entirely is to ruin combat by making them Pokemon.
- Whatever they have to throw at you, they never miss. If you are running, they throw shit advanced so that it hits you. It's incredibly stupid how precise you have to be to avoid shit.

Weapons: Weapons are mostly useless in this game. It's hard to have fun with them because they don't do shit.
- Again, armor ruins everything. The tear arrows now take much longer. It's like the entire fight it's used to remove armor.
- Rope caster is useless now.
- Gauntless are cool but good luck catching the disc THREE times while moving like crazy because of how you need to spend 100% rolling.
- Tripcasters are useless. They don't even fill the element state and they just alert enemies, so you just get yourself in a fight when trying to be stealthy
- Spears are so OP. This is my main weapon when fighting large enemies. Again, cheese-able
- Weapon skills are good, but they shouldn't be limited since they are not that good!
- Weapon surges are horrible. They are useful, but they last like 5 seconds, so become useless.

Items/traps:
-Items are useless.
-Traps are OP in most cases, making fights cheese-able.

The first one was fun. It was a grounded game with basic mechanics that made the game enjoyable. They tried to implement so much shit in this game, that forgot the fun factor. I remember loving to fight Stormbirds and Thunderjaws because I used to rope cast them. Now I just hit them with arrows until they die. It's not fun anymore.

There are many new machines that I would like to use the rope caster but it's useless. New weapons are not fun because every machine is so fast and so aggressive that you just have to roll, roll, roll, roll, roll, roll, and then go high ground and cheese.

Maybe many of you will say: GET GOOD! But that's the thing, I don't think this game is designed like a soul's game where you need to learn the enemies patterns very intricately to be able to win. It used to be a game to have fun, it was like a AAA super-hero movie that doesn't get involved in deep shit to be fun.

If there is a third one, they need to rethink the design of the game. Go back to basics.

Just few weeks ago you thought it was amazing...
I'm currently playing and it improved on Zero Dawn so much, that it rendered it useless. I can't imagine myself going back to that one. The game is great but obviously has its faults as every game does.

The issue comes when you start comparing with other games instead of enjoying (or judging) what you have. For example, I don't enjoy the climbing in this game, but worse for me it's the stupid jump. Since the game only let's you climb where it wants, you need to do those stupid jumps like it's a NES game until you reach the top. I don't want a game where you can climb everything like in BOTW, but this is pathetic, but of course I start thinking about BOTW when I want to climb things.

Many people likes every game to play as their favorite game, but it's impossible! Learn to play with what you get in every game, and you'll enjoy them more, and when you don't like something, you'll have a more objective opinion on it.

The game by itself it's amazing, and I can only imagine what they will do on the third one now that they will have the power of the PS5 at last.

Some people's complaints about this game is rather odd.

You're saying things are "cheese-able" and other weapons are useless.. Do you know how that was a major problem in the first game?

The heavy attack was the biggest culprit. You could stun and take down a lot of enemies with the heavy attack and use tear arrows throughout the game, rendering a lot of other weapons useless.

You only get two pools of health

Sure but to compensate potions give you permanent health boost in the sense that they do not slowly drain as previous game, they just stay there until you get hit and you can keep stacking them up to a point. I guess not having immediate access to the stashed stuff would be too easy. I understand that when she carries tons of armors and weapons in her ass it makes no sense to have limited berry stash however it was just as a way to balance difficulty, plus you can upgrade all that stuff. I played and finished the game on the hardest difficulty, you won't have that many issues.
The climbing is horrible

Yes, it is. No idea why Sony games cant learn from one of the good things Ubisoft has ever done.
Combat: The combat is horrible

Thats dumb as shit. It's the fucking same combat but improved. You can't think for one second and take advantage of weakpoints? Thats on you but it is vastly improved over hitting huge ass metal robots with tiny arrows and just wrecking them. At least now it makes sense you have to target specific points else your arrows do shit.

Melee: This is a joke!

It's improved over the first game and you can pull some crazy stuff, you clearly havent played enough.

WHY THE HELL I CAN'T USE A SHIELD OR PARRY?!

Play Dark Souls.

As for everything else you said, it seems like you're just bad at the game. It is certainly more difficult than the first, I died a ton of times on hardest difficulty and some enemies are pure fucking cancer like the snake but you just gotta be better.

I disagree with pretty much everything you said except for complaints about climbing and melee. The combat is simply fantastic, imo. Fighting massive robot monsters has never been so much fun to me. I do think they could make some tweaks on the inventory system as it is a bit cluttered, but that is minor. I'm in the minority on the story, it would seem, as I think it was told very well and the ending was great. Makes me even more excited for the next game.

But to each their own.

Wow quiet a wall of text.

But I get a feeling you actually played the game, unlike OP of that thread criticising Halo Infinite.

To be honest , i put this game down after 10-15 hours got very bored. Story wise its laughable. Apart from how great it looks and it does look fantastic btw, to me it just another western check all the boxes open world game. I've started calling it Assassin creed Ginger

But maybe that's me wanting something newish something different in a open world, then the bog standard which we have been getting from western devs for a decade. However am glad there's plenty of people out there that do love it.

I also distinctly remember the first to have used weapons better. Even when I had less options the ones available where always usefull and fun.

Now I just used the same bow for the duration of the game, melee was made more important by the game yet the mechanics are still bad. Can’t put my finger on it but instead of doing heroic moves I was rolling around like a bitch most of the time in the sequel.

I agree with some of this. The enemies seem a lot more annoying with all the shit they throw at you. One of the small ones jumps at you, you dodge roll, then you get hit halfway through the rolling animation by some bullshit aoe that takes away half your health.

Well, shit then, cause the story in the first one was not its strong point. Now I'm even less inclined to play the sequel.

nah you should, the story presentation and side quests are superior. Most ppl only think the first game had a good story because of the twist and the unknown. After that theres nothing about it that was good, generic bad guy, side characters that no one gave a shit, etc. The second game makes use of the side characters much better, they have more impact, they are there kinda of like Mass Effect 2 did with their companions but the story doesnt really have anything of shock value besides one twist that you can see it coming based on the story bits/signs and it feels more safe.

overcomplicating and adding stuff (more scanning, more items, weapon leveling, armor leveling etc)... Adding complexity is not better.
I have similar gripes with elden Ring

Definitely agree with some points there, especially about combat. The dino's are on your ass constantly, can jump at you from any range, every attack knocks you down. It feels very frustrating, especially after spending a month n a bit on elden ring and going back to Horizon.
And yeah, most of the weapons other than some bows and spears are garbage. Game needs a balancing patch for sure.

The only thing the second one missed for me was that aliasing. It makes the game look much worse than it should.

I don't know what the hell they changed considering the decima engine always produces games so damn clean visually like the first game and death stranding.

Here we have all these great assets full of aliasing that wasn't present on the first game. It's incredibly annoying and this is without the shimmering issue some people have...

Everything else it's better than the first.

I strongly disagree, i LOVE both games

When the berries run empty you can HOLD the "up" button on the D-PAD for a second or so and the berries get reloaded. In one of the skill trees you can improve the value of the berries

The climbing is horrible, and not even comparing it to another game. The game is not even consistent on what you can and can't climb and the functionality is extremely buggy.
In the settings you can activate that the climbing things are always shown, which makes live much easier and you dont have to push L3 all the time
Combat: The combat is horrible comparing it to the first one. It's not enjoyable for many reasons, but my main complain is that either is bad or it's cheese-able.

For me it looks like you expect the combat to be extremely easy, so you can win without thinking at all.
whatever, I guess I am a "below average" gamer (getting old) and I am quite successful on "normal". I feel good after winning a battle in this game :messenger_beaming:
That drilling spears seem to be very strong against most machines...

I have tons of fun with the game.
"learning the enemies patterns" sound like it gets boring with time because you just have to make the same steps each and every time and just need to perfect them.
Compar it to this game where the machines seem to have its own will and behave different each time you try, but still somewhat natural.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
First it's two pools of 18 berries( although this maybe upgradable so you might only have 16 at the moment)
And second you can replenish you health anytime while doing any action, you don't need to stop you can do it during combat, running or climbing.
You can also refill your pool too while doing other actions.
The only one that requires you to stop is potions.
So I'm not sure what ya on about.

Yep. Been saying this since day one. Feels like the kzsf of the series. Some of the design decisions make zero sense. Especially the aggressive enemies who jump around constantly.

Whoever decided that Your arrows will do 1-2 damage if you hit armor needs to be fired and then forced to play kzsf for ten consecutive weeks as punishment.

No, they make zero sense FOR YOU. It's actually way more fun on the second one, makes you actually think and plan ahead.

The first one you just had to use the strongest arrow and that's it.

You can't complain about game design if you can't be bothered to understand it.

Making stuff complicated for the sake of making it more complicated is not good design.

The tools have been there in the first game, you could swap weapons around more freely, and get your plan executed fast, simple and in a fun way. Now you have to juggle 25 arrow types, combining fire arrows for enemies weak against fire. What is fun about this kind of micromanagement? I get it for boss fights, but they went overboard with a lot of these things.

I feel like Devs ten years ago got the memo that stoping the game to farm berries is not a great design and made it so that health replenishes automatically. There is nothing more boring than running out of berries and having to go fetch them. Micro fetch quests.
Yeah I get the idea/fantasy behind hunter/gatherer but damn, im fighting aliens here. Give me a break.

+ I would rather have a charge timer on high powered arrows once they run out than having to get some random resources all the time. Why is the "slow motion" power not a consumable? These mechanics are all over the place.

There are not 25 arrow types. For killing machines, there are fire, frost, shock, water, acid, and plasma that match the respective weaknesses. And using elemental weapons that match the weakness of enemies has been around for decades. That is old school RPG stuff. I really don't get why that is such a bother though. Where is the fun in just shooting regular arrows at machines until they die?

Lognor Lognor not getting the joke. Fill me in. Edit: that's what I thought

Berries are everywhere though and once you get enough and have your pouch upgraded you can replenish them at any time from your stash by holding ⬆️

The bolt gun is the most effective for me but you also have to find out the machine's weakness by scanning it and use the right element to damage it more

it might be a stupid question, but how do you shoot the water?
for me it seems I have tons of weapons, but none of them shoot this water... And there are many enemies who are vulnerable only against it.

You need purge water ammo. You can either buy a weapon that is compatible with purge water or some are able to upgrade to use it. Hunter bows or blastlings are good options for doing elemental damange in my experience.

Here is the Purgewater Hunter Bow:

Oooh, than it's a complete opposite of how I understood it, thanks! I love developed characters and on that regard ME1 > 2 was quite a leap. Story in HZD1 was only good in the sense of an overall idea (which wasnt very unique to begin with), but it's execution was quite underwhelming and the individual characters were weak and forgettable. Thanks again.

Sure np. Tho it is very subjective in the sense that even if the side characters are well more developed, you might still not like them for their personality. Varl was certainly improved and theres a new one Kotallo which i really liked as well. Based on a lot of topics and posts, Forbidden West does not click with everyone. If it helps when I played Zero Dawn on PS4 at launch day I thought it was a 6-7/10 kind of game, with the twist and graphics being the only redeeming qualities while everyone praised it. It took a lot of years and a PC release to change my opinion slighty towards better. Forbidden West is certainly an 8.5 game despite many frustrations that I had in combat(I played it on the hardest and some enemies just fucking wrecked me) because it's A LOT harder than the previous one. The atmosphere and graphics tho? One if not, the best.

Story mode will solve some of your gripes as far as difficulty goes. But, it seems like you keep going back and forth from "it's really difficult" to "you can cheese everything"?

I disagree with pretty much everything you said except for complaints about climbing and melee. The combat is simply fantastic, imo. Fighting massive robot monsters has never been so much fun to me. I do think they could make some tweaks on the inventory system as it is a bit cluttered, but that is minor. I'm in the minority on the story, it would seem, as I think it was told very well and the ending was great. Makes me even more excited for the next game.

But to each their own.
I loved it and yeah melee still isn't very good and the climbing is serviceable but everything else is great

I was so intrigued by the subordinate functions, Gaia, Sylens and his plan

9/10

Yeah.....the poor climbing mechanic was hardly a game breaking issue. It just needs to be rethought in the next game. But the combat was so much fun. I'm glad I'm not the only one who liked the story.

I personally found the second game to be better in every aspect. They took the potential of the first game and actually delivered on it. Improvements on all fronts.
