spending less time on SP game due to staying social in MP games with friends

Crazy how life changes, now with a wife and as a new dad, plus work. I dont have much time.

10 PM gets here, its been a long day, finally get some tome to myself to game and relax. The buddies are on, and we play apex, monster hunter, or another mp game, we chat, we play, we have fun.

Its a good time, but so hard to continue my sp games now.

Anyone else having a similar dilemma? has your gaming habits changed over time?

Although I dont mind this at all, cause its fun to strategize, be social while gaming, it also means almost every night this is what im doing rather than continuing a story forward. Not sure how to balance it.

I’m spending more time with my friends from high school and college than I ever had before thanks to Fortnite. Once it went completely free to play, and you did not need a subscription service to play it, I have so many friends who hop on their PC or kids’ consoles and we use it to catch up. Even if we lose more than we win, it’s just fun to catch up on whatever our interests are.

Yeah I stopped playing Battlefield V because they would play every day after work.... I stopped year ago and they still play every day.
Casuals are easily contempt with their crap mp games.
It's ok to play your own games.

I personally stopped playing MP games long time ago, even games like Monster Hunter and FROM games I much rather play them solo. My friends are not really in to games as much as I'm and everyone is busy with their own life and maybe once in blue moon we can play Mario Kart together.

When it comes to gaming I'm very anti-social, gaming is mostly my me time I dont want anyone interfere with that and with the introduction of online fee after PS3, it made me even less motivated to play online games.

Funny, since my idea for a perfect evening after kids go to sleep is a book and a piano, definitely not looking at the tv screen with strangers.

Genetic diversity + 8 billion people on earth = wide variety of preferences among individuals. Still, multiplayer is exploding for a reason.

I have cero time to play during the day, so I do my gaming after kids go to bed.

No multiplayer though.

I play a mix of both and often play while in a part just chatting with friends.

I wouldn't want to be limited to one or the either.

I specifically stop myself from playing a single game too much, because otherwise I won't finish anything else; like I could just play evil dead all day every day, but then my backlog will just keep growing.

That’s me. Feels nice. 🙂

I used to play Motorstorm at the PS3 launch though, but today I don’t like interacting with real people within games, if there is any type of serious world building then being social with real people breaks the immersion since people usually don’t role play.

I’ve tried real social-focused games too but then people quickly showed that they’re douche bags, so I hard pass on that.

Nope. No one believes you have friends.

Decent try though.

Have you guys tried playing through campaigns like Far Cry 5? Or Ghost Recon Wildlands?

Opposite, not in time , that is non existent. opposite in that I don't have time for multiplayer games.

I my youth (20s ) I played a ton of Quake 2/3, unreal tournament ,ut2004, Battlefield Vietnam, bf2, cod4, mw2, waw, TF, TF2, Everquest, Lotro, Vanguard, SW Galaxies. EQ2, Guild Wars, Rome /Medieval Total war, Rise of nations, doing lan or online multiplayer. Had a friend who had a dedicated gaming server room , one big Intel xeon server, and 10 desktop pcs setup and would have gaming nights. Smoking weed, drinking and fragging each other in Quake 3/UT (now called ut99)
Was a blast of a time. This lasted until he had a divorce and spent nights at the titty bar instead of hosting parties. Luckily online gaming was more of thing by then so didn't need the lan setup. Had upgraded my Pentium 3 w/voodoo card to a Athlon xp w/ geforce 3. Played games listed above for years. Never got into wow though, many friends did and that is all they played. I diversify my gaming interests.

I still had time for single player games. Espeically rpgs , city builders and strategy games like civ. Even getting married and with kids , had time to game., but here is where things stopped. I needed to be able to pause, and you can't do that in mp games. So i stuck playing single player games and very rarely mp. I used ds/psp -> 3ds / vita to circumvent time, by playing on the toilet or outside on the porch. The switch is all I ever wanted back then.

I am now 43 been divorced after a 10 year run, kids gone from home, and am recently engaged, 2nd time around. Still don't have time for multiplayer. I spend some time between calls and slow time at work (wfh) playing on the switch or civ/city skylines on the pc. Something again where I can pause and not require sound.
Then will play more switch on the toilet, and play some ps5 on my days off or here and there at night time.
I don't spend late night on consoles, as I would rather spend that with my girlfreind as Its something I regret about my first marriage. She comes first. I got plenty of time to game on days off or earlier in the night. Have a dedicated game room just for that.

So single player games are for me where it's at. I have tried multiplayer at friends request to play satisfactory, and risk for rain 2, which was fun but at the same time very very time consuming. Its fun here and there but takes a lot of dedication. It also makes some games not fun in that a lot of stuff you miss as someone else already did the stuff required. If you leave and come back another day you are lost or under leveled. I like my own pace. MP games back in the day didn't require commitment like now. Quake3/ut99 was fun for anyone . Sure you may get your ass handed to you but you still could try and have fun.

I stopped doing online MP, mostly because I miss the old internet, where you could beplaying and MP game on your own, join whatever server you fancy and start blasting away fuckers. Basically MP games were designed to be played on your own and there were many custom servers, community servers, etc.

Nowadays, it seems that you need to be part of a "squad" or you'll be in disadvantage. There also seems like most games don't even give you the chance of browsing a server list, instead putting you in a matchmaking list. Gross.

On the bright side, I still do local MP gaming sessions with my frens, like twice a month or so. We get some weed and snacks, and beat games like Streets of Rage 4 or Left 4 Dead 2, or just play some Mario Karts or Mario Strikers. Good times.

This, game time is me time. I talk to people 10 + hours a day at work. When i am not working I want to escape not socialize.

An occasional multiplayer match is fine. Which is cool when there is matchmaking and no voice chat. Playing a match of tennis in switch sports or a race in GT7 is all good, but not something i dedicate much time or regularity too.
Meanwhile playing a single player city builder, strategy game, 3rd person adventure game, fps emergent shooter, open world game, etc... is all escape into another world, if only for a bit.

My ideal games are games like thief, system shock, dues ex, civilization, eu4, city skylines, mount and blade, elder scrolls, Dragons Dogma, battle brothers, witcher, slay the spire, dark souls, etc... single player games you loose yourself in.

I see friends outside of gaming all the time. When I relax to play a game, I'm offline to the rest of the world, including friends. Gaming is time for me to enjoy by myself alone and I don't like being disturbed during this time. I play the occasional game of fifa with friends here and there but I prefer to be offline and play games alone.

Good way to describe it. I wonder if its an age thing, but then I think games like that don't exist anymore.
I was playing quake 1 on my switch last night and was reminiscing on how I miss the simple shooters like these. How stress relieving and fun quake 3/ut/tf2/bf2 was back in the day. You picked a server and went . If you didnt play it didn't matter.

Only game I see this that has something like it is War Thunder, yeah that has progression with buying planes, but its all with randos and matches are quick. There is no server lists in most games though, unfortunately.
I'd love an old school style arena shooter resurgence, but we won't get that without micro transactions, gaas, seasons, and twitch streamer bs.

Those older games also had tons of fan made mods. I guess it was an expierence in time lost to a different generation.

Ay my man, we feel the same. I was a bit too young when the Quake 3/UT craze took over, but I loved playing some later games like Enemy Territory, Day of Defeat Source or Team Fortress 2.

How's TF2 nowadays? Last time I played the game wasn't F2P, so I guess things must hve changed along the way. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Btw, read on your previous post that you like M&B and Battle Brothers. Have you tried Wartales? Heard it's pretty much like those games, but the early access tag is keeping me away from trying it out.

im not too particularly social outside of gaming, with family, work etc, sometimes our best time to meet and chat ends up on a mp game

and again, we love it too

after a stressed day at work, its nice to chat with friends, and work together on a team game. Its kinda a stress reliever

Quake Wars enemy territories was fun. Forgot about that , or are you talking about wolfenstien enemy territories? Both probably play the same. TF2... I too havent' played since before the "hats" or whatever they do now. Last I played it was just the classes and no unlocks, that i remember. Just fun matches. It's been years.

Wartales, haven't even heard about it. Will check it out though, thanks. M&B and battle brothers are some of my favs.

Me and my buddy occasionally play something together, but it's mostly just an excuse to shoot the shit. Other than that I am exclusively a single player kinda guy.

We will play destiny together. Other than that, we usually play solo games then talk about them over text.

It is funny how things start to shift. I am in kind of a different position in that I'm navigating towards shorter, more focused games than long epics. Open world games are out of the question, aside from the few times I have an itch. I'm not a multiplayer kind of gamer, but I do find myself more likely to play a round or two of Pokémon Unite or Brawl Stars than start an RPG. I used to be obsessed with RPGs. I don't have any kids or spouse and have a good amount of free time still. A good story relaxes me, so I need a rich narrative game at the end of a workday.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I'm the opposite, can't stand playing with others
I mean you get 48 kills and still lose the match because the rest of the team can't get into double digit kills🙄
Pisses me off😤

You multiplayer haters should read this book...

51N4pspRqSL.jpg

The central premise is that humans have an innate desire to be valued within a community.

Multiplayer games up till this point have failed tremendously at valuing all members of a team or group. That's starting to change.

A lot of single player games work extra hard to find ways to waste your time or force you to do things that distract you from getting into some sort of flow state in the game. Too many cooks spoiling the broth. Most MP games are designed to be addictive digital crack, with nothing between you and the dopamine hits.

Not a hater, just don't like new multiplayer games. I liked quake, doom, duke3d,unreal, old school battlefield, cod4/waw, tf2, qwet, m&B warband, Killzone 2, resistance, socom, warhawk. All great multiplayer games that sadly aren't really done anymore.
Everything today is fortnite battle royale, cosemtics, mtx, gaas, seasons, etc...

Simple free for all, team deathmatch, capture the flag, or battlefiled style of conquering control points and I am good.

Give me some fast movement, metal/techno inspired fast soundtracks and gibs... We don't even get gibs anymore and barely ragdolls. MP is so lame today. I don't need a tribe, just need a game I can play for a few and then do something else without having to talk to people.

Release unreal 2022, quake 5, a new killzone/warhawk/resistance like the earlier ps3 titles and I will be all over it. No base building, no hero classes.

I'd really really love a new quake or unreal tournament game but that is sadly not happening.

I kind of go in phases, like sometimes I could go several months maybe even a year without putting any real time into single player games, and then beat 4-5 single player games in a month right after. It really depends what mood I'm in, what games friends are playing, what's happening in my life, etc. etc.

There have been a number of Quake and Unreal Tournament style games released over the last few years. They always bomb because there's not enough of your kind.

I DO NOT like to play with other people, it’s that simple, you need accept that not all people care to be “social” when it comes to gaming. I do socialize outside of that but when it comes gaming I like to be left alone to enjoy my gaming time in peace, I don’t need other people to interfere with that.

It's not about you. Or any individual.

It's about human nature. Multiplayer is booming because multiplayer developers have started to understand human nature better than they did 5 years ago, 20 years ago etc...

I'm merely commenting on the broader trend, not everyone's individual preferences.
